Pinups Tour Sacramento’s Best Hot Rod Shop

posted by pikesan

2010 Pin-up Girl Wall Calendars I know you just want to see the girls, so here's the Hot Rod Pinups in the Pinup Gallery You can find oil and filters and replace that dead battery (usually on a Saturday night) at any-old parts store, but when you're looking for parts for your hot rod or vintage truck, you've got more to think about.  So what do you look for? In the Sacramento area, check out Darold Kohout at Sacramemnto Vintage Ford. Cruising up to Sacramento Vintage Ford for the first time, I didn't know what to expect.  First thing I notice?  This place is HUGE!  The parking lot would hold over a hundred cars and is just about perfect for the "Vintage Friday" shows hosted every so often from June to October.  Then, just through the doors, you're greeted with two fantastic Model T hot rods. The first T-bucket was Norm Grabowski's famous "Kookie Kar" (now owned by John Labelle).  It's blue base coat highlighted with classic-styled yellow flames and wide whites clad steelies was an inspiration for a wave of T's.  You know the car, but have you...

Cacklefest’n Nitro Burning 1930 Ford Coupe

posted by pikesan

Nitro Burning Model A Ford Coupe Twin blown 1930 Ford Coupe ready to run Nitro as seen at the 2009 So-Cal open house in Pomona, CA When Canada natives Ken and his partner Frank Bevacqua from Top Ten Hot Rods and Customs build a hot rod, they follow their motto: "Bad Done Good". That exactly describes their ground pounding, nitro burning, fuel injected, hemi powered, twin McCulloch blown, tube frame 1930 Ford Coupe. Do I have your attention? Built as Top Ten's calling card of badness, Frank told me he loves the funny cars and front engine diggers you usually see at the popular cacklefest events, but where are the coupes? At drag races and for the first time at the 2009 LA Roadster Show, cacklefests are awesome. If you've never seen and more importantly heard a "cacklefest" then you're missing out. Imagine 5-20 nitromethane or "fuel" burning beasts from the not-forgotten yester-year of drag racing's lined up, and lit up, usually at night or just dusk to see the signature yellow flames shooting from the exhaust pipes. You know you're in the right place when the push cars...

June Pinup of the Month – Zoe Scarlett

posted by pikesan

I first bumped into Ms. Zoe Scarlett while looking for a great hot rod pinup picture to use for the very first MyRideisMe.com flier ever made. Graphic artist and Photographer Dirk Behlau kindly let the tiny web start-up use his image. That black hot rod with stunning blond featured Zoe Scarlett who is now the June Pinup of the Month. * How'd you become a pinup? Is pinup big in Switzerland? I took my first pin-up pictures in my boyfriend’s garage on a very cold day in January. I wanted to surprise him with some cute pictures when he returned from his holiday. I never thought that this would be my future career! At the same time, Switzerland’s most famous newspaper, BLICK, advertised a contest called ‘the cutest neighbor’. I spontaneously decided to take part in the contest and sent in the pictures I’d made for my boyfriend. Two days later, there was a huge picture of me on the cover of Switzerland’s BLICK! Well, that was the beginning of my pin-up modeling career! * What's your favorite pinup picture ever? That’s a hard question, during my career as...

Droppin’ Anchor at Ink and Iron with Bo Huff

posted by GreaseGirl

This past weekend I was able to make it to Ink N Iron 6 - a tattoo festival + car show + rockabilly music event held on the amazing Queen Mary ship in Long Beach, California. Am I glad I dropped anchor! Not only did I hear some great bands and see some awesome cars - but I got to meet up with car customizer Bo Huff and best of show winner Voodoo Larry! Let me fill you in on the show…this was year #6 for Ink & Iron – and I dug it! Each year it’s held in Long Beach aboard the Queen Mary – which is a huge, Titanic-ish ship. There are tons of tattoo artists exhibiting and doing tattoos. There’s dozens of bands playing throughout the day. Pinups are around too of course - vying for the $2000 grand prize in the contest (why don’t they award cars that much when they win?!?) And obviously… custom cars. This show is all about rockabilly and kustom culture. So of course the cars showing up are along the style the rockabilly crowd likes - Classic rods and crazy...

Gettin’ Patriotic with The Pinup Angels

posted by GreaseGirl

2010 Pin-up Girl Wall Calendars As Memorial Day and July 4th are sparkin’ up our summers – let me introduce some gals who are sparkin’ up some TLC for our boys serving overseas. The Pinup Angels are a group made up entirely of volunteer pinups. These ladies make care packages (with pictures included of course) and send them out to show a little love and care to our troops overseas. We all know of the WWII pinup being used to boost troops moral and I think it’s really cool that these ladies aren’t just posing but they’re very active in finding other ways to support guys who are working to defend the ol’ USofA. Their care packages deliver not just pictures, baked goodies, and other useful stuff - but they deliver a message to the fellas that people back home are thinking of them and are very grateful for their service. I was fortunate enough to get a chance to talk to Miss Kitty Baby, the Pinup Angel’s leading lady, while at Viva Las Vegas. With tattoos and bright red hair, she’s not your average 1940s girl – but...

Pinup Dreams Made True in Vegas

posted by pikesan

This story was written by Dave or elmoco40 in his MyRideisMe garage. It's a story of a guy finding love and hot rods! It's bring a tear to your eye if Dave's wife, Larua Lee weren't so hot! This is exactly the kind of story we want at MyRideisMe.com! Great times, get'n the girl, what else is there? For Dave's efforts, I'm sending him a pack of Pinup Playing Cards by Heidi Van Horne and Sabina Kelly. Look for a contest soon where you can win your set of pinup playing cards, or just send us your ideas! I grew up in so. Cal, in the town of Santa Ana, CA. Growing up I was surrounded by a lot of lowriders and kustoms that were owned by local clubs and gangs. I was always fascinated by the elaborate paint jobs and the use of hydraulics on there cars, so when I was old enough to know what a wrench was and how to operate a spray can, I began my journey into ripping things apart and trying to somehow make'em different, whether it was bikes or big wheels, something...

May Pinup of the Month – Candace Campbell

posted by pikesan

I saw Ms. Candace at the Pinupalooza show during Viva Las Vegas, but I didn't know it since she didn't have the stunning red hair in the picture below. Plus, when flanked by hotties like Sabina Kelly, Dayna Delux and Heidi Van Horne, it's easy to get distracted. None the less we're friends now and here's some info about May's Pinup of the Month: Candace Campbell. I was born in a small Louisiana parish. You're looking at a genuine born and raised southern belle. Since I was little I've been amazed by the mysterious blues lounge singers of new Orleans and fascinated with the glamorous vintage Hollywood and retro pin up style of the 40s. This explains why I am able to capture that classic essence so comfortably. I am a mix of the two worlds. I was inspired by the bravery of elegance of Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn to name a few. I began collecting vintage clothes from the 1920's through the 1950's and learned about the details of dressing vintage from head to toe. I found out that not only were women dressed perfectly,...

Ladies of Viva Las Vegas

posted by pikesan

One of the fun and from what I've seen fairly unique parts of the Viva Las Vegas car show is the girls! Some of them professional pinups like the lovely Kim Falcon pictured here, and some of them girls trying to be pinups or just out having a good time! Whatever the motivation, we like! As you cruised the show, you'd see these girls done up pinup-like or sometimes just looking hot and when they'd stop at a car, the cameras would come out like crazy and a near mob-scene started as everyone tried to get their own shots. They should just come to MyRideisMe.com, it saves on film! (duh, I know) So check out Paul Swanson (Swanee@myrideisme.com) my man and chief photo madman's new Ladies of Viva gallery. He's got photos all over the place and a really nice garage filled with his favorite pics. Contact him if you want one of the photos, especially a high resolution or something without the MyRideisMe logo. He's cool like that. If we caught you walking around, let us...

Gettin’ Girlie at Viva Las Vegas

posted by GreaseGirl

So I know ya’ll are dyin' to hear what the ladies were up to during Viva Las Vegas 12. If you had the privilege of being present, you already know that Viva Las Vegas was swarming with some of the purdiest ladies you ever did see. While you fellas might've been out merely lookin' for ladies - I was lookin' for fellow Grease Girls. Being that the car show at VLV draws one of the biggest grouping of home-built cool traditionals, customs, and rat-rods – I was hoping I'd find a few of those “builders” who also happened to be ladies. As Stude (my own 1955 Studebaker Champion) and I arrived on the lot Thursday evening, many other cars had already arrived, but we were the only girl-owned car so far. By the time Saturday rolled around the entire lot reserved for the VLV 12 Shifters Car Show was full, with ample stragglers in The Orleans parking lot. As soon as I showed up on the scene Saturday morning, I wholeheartedly began my search for fellow car ladies. You'd think finding other lady car owners wouldn't be too much...

2009 Viva Las Vegas Car Show – See for Yourself

posted by pikesan

As a Viva LasVegas car show virgin, I drove blindly into a sea of horseshit opinions about what the Rockabilly Weekender is... without first hand experience, I checked and heard varying opinions about the show, especially about what I'm most interested in, the strolling pinups... no, scratch that, the hot rods! Just like the saying goes, everyone's got an opinion and I have to say, most of what I heard STANK! Living in Arizona, and only about 5 hours from Las Vegas, I decided to roll up and check for myself. (so here's my opinion... keep the air-freshener handy) First off, what had I heard about the Viva Las Vegas Car Show or "Rockabilly Weekender" as it's called? I heard the quality of cars sucked. NOT true. I heard it wasn't a fun crowd. Also not true. Then, even though I'm not a big rockabilly fan, I did enjoy the music... and I only got to hear what was played outside at the car show. About the rides... The cars I found were almost all right up my alley. Nobody goes to a car show and only finds what...

Pin Up? Mechanic? Say Hello to Grease Girl.

posted by GreaseGirl

Many of you wrenchin’ around have been doing it since you had a baby bottle in your mouth. When you were out in the garage learning what a radiator was I was over at Miss Sally’s ballet class turning pirouettes. That’s right, I’m a girl – and not exactly your average grease monkey. I know lots of you fellas think ladies are only around to look pretty - and while I may not be too hard on the eyes – I’m not coming around just to pose on your shiny (or primered) hood. I’m here to get under it. Sparkin’ my under-hood adventures is my 1955 Studebaker Champion. After wanting a classic car for years, I finally leaped in a couple of years ago during a move from car-less San Francisco to car-necessary Los Angeles. Now I don’t know about you, but it’s my opinion that you shouldn’t drive a classic if you don’t want to work on it. And I wanted to…the only thing standing in my way was the fact that the only thing I’d ever done to a car was change a tire (and even that...
