Yucca Valley may be a bit off the beaten path. Some might just call it a road-trip checkpoint rather than a destination. Maybe after you see this 1950 Mercury built by The Hot Rod Shop in Yucca Valley, you might turn this checkpoint-town into a destination-town of your own.
Not only does Toby Stanford, owner, put out some damn good lookin’ cars for customers, he’s also got quite a collection of his own. Lucky for all of you he let us, including the lovely pinup model Masuimi Max, take a peek around his garage.
Other than the beautiful lines we all drool over when looking at a well-chopped Mercury, one of the first things you might notice here is this Merc’s subtle yet striking paint job. No, your eyes are not tricking you. It is black on black – gloss flames on suede paint. For all the attention that’s been given to primer jobs as of late, this is a new twist to an old classic. And while you may have seen one or two other such jobs, Toby assures us that when he finished this car in December 2007, it was the first he’d ever seen of its kind. Who wouldn’t want to implement this idea on their own hot rod, though?
This Mercury has a few other goodies as well. Start with a 6” chop, DeSoto grill, stock bumpers, and frenched headlights and antennae. Throw on some Pontiac taillights in the rear. Add Mustang front seats, a continuous console, and a ’59 Chevy steering wheel along with plenty of pinstriping done by Ben Demon on the interior. But even with all its good looks, this Mercury’s built with driving in mind. So under the hood you’ve got a simple 350 Chevy giving ya power, backed up by a 350 transmission and a Ford 9” rear-end. In addition this car is bagged on all 4’s.
Until he sold it recently, Toby says the Merc was his errand-running car around town. And although Toby didn’t have plans to sell it, when someone comes knocking on your door wanting to give you money, it’s hard to turn em’ down. Unfortunately the new owner isn’t enjoying the car as much. As Toby quotes, he’s “too afraid to take it out.”
Let’s hope that on the next try Toby will keep it and continue rollin’ around the streets of Yucca Valley. Or, if it’s not him, we’ll see more of the cars put out by The Hot Rod Shop of Yucca Valley out there driving.
“I don’t draw them out the way some car builders do,” says Toby. “It’s just the way I figured it up.” Well Toby, we like the way you figure it, and hope we get to see more of The Hot Rod Shop’s work in the future.
This isn’t the only car in Toby’s shop. From this shot outside, you can see a few of the trick rides he’s building for himself and customers. You can see just about all of them in the pinup model picture page.
There’s a few more pics of his work in pinup picture gallery for Masuimi. These 3 look so great, I had to show them here. (the t-bird in the back’s not bad either!) Click on any of these pics to see it full size.
Special thanks to Toby for opening his shop to MyRideisMe.com and Mitzi from Mitzi and Co. pinup photography. Then, of course, thank you to pinup model Masuimi Max. Book her for an appearance or photo shoot (she does all kinds, not just pinup!) at her sizzling hot website IamTrouble.com.

Gettin’ Patriotic with The Pinup Angels

2010 Pin-up Girl Wall Calendars
As Memorial Day and July 4th are sparkin’ up our summers – let me introduce some gals who are sparkin’ up some TLC for our boys serving overseas. The Pinup Angels are a group made up entirely of volunteer pinups. These ladies make care packages (with pictures included of course) and send them out to show a little love and care to our troops overseas.
We all know of the WWII pinup being used to boost troops moral and I think it’s really cool that these ladies aren’t just posing but they’re very active in finding other ways to support guys who are working to defend the ol’ USofA. Their care packages deliver not just pictures, baked goodies, and other useful stuff – but they deliver a message to the fellas that people back home are thinking of them and are very grateful for their service.

I was fortunate enough to get a chance to talk to Miss Kitty Baby, the Pinup Angel’s leading lady, while at Viva Las Vegas. With tattoos and bright red hair, she’s not your average 1940s girl – but she definitely has the old-fashioned, caring “heart of gold” we’d like to imagine all pinups have.
Coming from a military service herself (she was a Marine!), Miss Kitty has always been community-oriented. So after putting in her years of service and donating her own money she wanted to find a new way to stir up support for the troops and recruit others along the way. So in June of 2007 she put the word out and started gathering other pin-ups to her cause. Based out of Seattle, the Pinup Angels now have 25 regular volunteers who get together every couple months. They’ve sent overseas a whooping 1300 care packages! Not only do they send care packages but they also show up at tons of different events to fundraise, meet people, and have fun.
That’s a whole lotta lovin’! So as we celebrate these holidays of freedom- after the barbecue’s over head on over to The Pinup Angels and find out how you can support these hard working pinups with what they do. In fact, in May if you subscribe to Bachelor Pad magazine through the angel’s site (this issue featuring the lovely Bernie Dexter) they’ll donate 5 magazines to be added to care packages – what a deal!
Chances are you’ll be able to find these gals at any number of car shows throughout the year. And I guarantee – they’re even more lovely in person than they are in the photos!

So a big thanks out there to all the folks who’ve served our country and thanks to Miss Kitty and all the ladies of The Pinup Angels for makin’ patriotism look so good… keep up the good work!
Happy Trails!

This story was written by Dave or elmoco40 in his MyRideisMe garage. It’s a story of a guy finding love and hot rods! It’s bring a tear to your eye if Dave’s wife, Larua Lee weren’t so hot!
This is exactly the kind of story we want at MyRideisMe.com! Great times, get’n the girl, what else is there? For Dave’s efforts, I’m sending him a pack of Pinup Playing Cards by Heidi Van Horne and Sabina Kelly. Look for a contest soon where you can win your set of pinup playing cards, or just send us your ideas!
I grew up in so. Cal, in the town of Santa Ana, CA. Growing up I was surrounded by a lot of lowriders and kustoms that were owned by local clubs and gangs. I was always fascinated by the elaborate paint jobs and the use of hydraulics on there cars, so when I was old enough to know what a wrench was and how to operate a spray can, I began my journey into ripping things apart and trying to somehow make’em different, whether it was bikes or big wheels, something was getting slammed and painted.
When I got into high school in 1978-79, I landed a job as a gas station attendant at a mobile gas station; there I learned basic mechanics by helping the guys work on stuff. Another kool thing that I discovered in 1980 was punk rock and the underground rockabilly scene! So now my little knowledge of cars and the music scene collided and so the kustom kulture scene was born. I feel totally blessed to be part of that emerging scene!
Although I was to poor to afford any kind of hot rod, I did the next best thing; I dated somebody who had a brother with one! lol. One of my 1st real girlfriends had an older brother who owned a beautiful 53 Merc, he called ”Maybelline”. It was all original and baby blue! Some of my best memories involved that car! It was so kool to be 16 -17 years old and pull up to a rockabilly show in that, it was rare back then!
Well of course time passed and the mid to late 80’s got weird and the scene kinda died, everybody kinda went there own ways? So fast forward to 1989, after many attempts to try and talk my newly retired parents to not move to Las Vegas, they did anyways? Go figure? Well after visiting them a few times, in 1991, I was at a point in my life where I needed a change so I decided to go stay with them and help them out? Well its funny how God has a plan for us, because after being there 6 mo., I met my beautiful wife Laura, it only took me a few dates to figure out, that this gal was thee one!
Laura Lee was beautiful and sweet and very artistic, I mean she had a beat up vVW bug she painted herself. It was hilarious? Plus she is a 3rd generation native, very rare, I mean her mom actually dated Elvis Presley in the 60’s, how crazy is that! So in 1993, we got hitched and in 1994 we had our 1st kid, wow!

So there I was, newly married, with a new baby, living in a new town, talk about anxiety attacks!
Then in 1996 a new music show was comin to town and there was a pre 1963 car show attached to it, it was called ” The Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender“, I was in shock and stoked at the same time! This past year was the 12th VLV event, and I’ve been to them all, and in my opinion the 1st 5 years were the best. When the car show was on top of the garage and there was no curfew and a lot less jerks causing trouble! But it’s still a lot of fun, and now I have a gorgeous wife, who does a little pin up modeling and a kool car to show off!

Ladies of Viva Las Vegas
April 26, 2009 by pikesan · Leave a Comment
One of the fun and from what I’ve seen fairly unique parts of the Viva Las Vegas car show is the girls! Some of them professional pinups like the lovely Kim Falcon pictured here, and some of them girls trying to be pinups or just out having a good time!
Whatever the motivation, we like!
As you cruised the show, you’d see these girls done up pinup-like or sometimes just looking hot and when they’d stop at a car, the cameras would come out like crazy and a near mob-scene started as everyone tried to get their own shots. They should just come to MyRideisMe.com, it saves on film! (duh, I know)
So check out Paul Swanson (Swanee@myrideisme.com) my man and chief photo madman’s new Ladies of Viva gallery. He’s got photos all over the place and a really nice garage filled with his favorite pics. Contact him if you want one of the photos, especially a high resolution or something without the MyRideisMe logo. He’s cool like that.
If we caught you walking around, let us know!
2009 Viva Las Vegas Car Show – See for Yourself
April 15, 2009 by pikesan · 8 Comments
As a Viva LasVegas car show virgin, I drove blindly into a sea of horseshit opinions about what the Rockabilly Weekender is… without first hand experience, I checked and heard varying opinions about the show, especially about what I’m most interested in, the strolling pinups… no, scratch that, the hot rods! Just like the saying goes, everyone’s got an opinion and I have to say, most of what I heard STANK! Living in Arizona, and only about 5 hours from Las Vegas, I decided to roll up and check for myself. (so here’s my opinion… keep the air-freshener handy)
First off, what had I heard about the Viva Las Vegas Car Show or “Rockabilly Weekender” as it’s called? I heard the quality of cars sucked. NOT true. I heard it wasn’t a fun crowd. Also not true. Then, even though I’m not a big rockabilly fan, I did enjoy the music… and I only got to hear what was played outside at the car show.
About the rides… The cars I found were almost all right up my alley. Nobody goes to a car show and only finds what they like, but if you’re into DRIVEN cars that are owned by guys that eat, sleep and shit cars, then you will find cars you like at Viva Las Vegas. I guess I expected to see a bunch of the bare-bones type “rat rods”, cause that’s what I was told.
Defining rat rod at this point is downright boring, but what I mean is cars built without basic necessities like for example, a floor. Cruising with a u-joint spinning next to my hand and ass is not my idea of fun. But that’s not what I found! I found tough looking hot rods with rough edges, but done purposefully. Leaving a weld unfinished like what I found in this low-slung sedan in the picture was cool and different.
Then, in addition to the hot rods and (screw the word rat) traditional style rods, the customs on hand were great. Chopped, dropped, some painted, some not, but all with the attention to detail that is exactly what, My Ride is Me is all about. This slick 53 Chevy 210 Sedan custom shown here was DAMN rusty… but who cares! The character was unmistakable and you won’t see this thing wasting away in a garage somewhere! For me, the cars were the stars of the show and will bring me back next year, hopefully driving my falcon wagon.
Picture of all the hot rod and custom cars at the Viva Las Vegas Car show will be uploaded soon.
From here, there’s much more to say, but It’ll wait for another blog.
The Story’s DONE! Look at Ladies of Viva! Viva Las Vegas is known for the pinup and generally vintage-style girls strolling around and either digging the scene or for a smile and a “would-ya-please” they’ll stand next to your ride and strike a pose. Swanee shot a bunch of girls doing their thing and we’ll post them in the Hot Rod Pinups Gallery soon.
(Swanee! Get to work!)
MyRideisMe.com is also starting our own Pinstriping photo gallery. Use it as a reference for your own ride or to teach yourself different styles or techniques of striping, lettering or logos and characters. I dig pinstriping and wish I could do it myself. Since that’s probably not in the cards, shooting pics of the great many examples of pinstriping at Viva Las Vegas car show was a natural!
The first set of pictures are now loaded. More coming soon! (want your work featured?) Here’s more info about the pinstiping art gallery.
Also look for great show coverage from Kristin or “Grease Girl”. She was at the show and made alot of new friends with pinups and other women enjoying the show. She’s also gonna fill us in on the drive she made in her hot rod Studebaker.
Finally, why was Viva Las Vegas a great show? It was easy for car folks to enjoy! Instead of gouging car owners, the price of the car show was included in the 4 day price of the show. That included all the bands, the burlesque shows and admission to the Tiki Pool party. Why do other shows make the cars pay extra? Great job!! The Viva crowd dominated the Orleans hotel bars and tables all having a good time. For the car show itself, it was only five-bucks to enter! The line of people stretched 200 long waiting to get in, and when they did, they still had extra cash to spend on the many quality vendors. That’s the way to do it. Cool hot rods and customs, the strolling pinups looking hot and live music with friends. What else is there? (oh, cold beer! Thanks Throttle Kings!)
So what’s your opinion? Did you enjoy yourself? Will you be there next year? Will you recommend it as a “Must Show” for next year? Let us know…
Hot Rod Photographer Jean-Marie Michalski
I met Jean Marie at the Grand National Roadster Show in January 2009. His card had a stunning photo on it and it said he does pinup photography, so we started chatting. See all the photos he shared with MyRideisMe.com in his Hot Rod Photo Gallery
43 year old Jean-Marie Michalski grew up in a town called Perwez in Belgium, as the single child of Jean Michalski, a now famous artist & painter. His father Jean Michalski was born in Belgium in 1936.
At 12 years old, Jean and his friends attempted to climb up an electricity pole to better see a soccer game. Jean lost his balance, fell off the pole and was electrocuted with 12,000 volts. The injury and subsequent complications led to the amputation of both arms. After the accident, Jean was placed in a rehabilitative institution for three years, where he learned to write with his mouth.
When Jean was 16 years old, the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (AMFPA) contacted his mother, and Founder Erich Stegmann visited the family’s home to recruit Jean as a student artist. The Association assisted with tuition for six years of art school at the Royal Academy of Beauty of Arts in Belgium, where Jean was the only disabled student. He became a full member artist of MFPA after six years, at which time the Mayor of Brussels honored him for his achievements. Jean and his son Jean-Marie came to the United States in 1981, where Jean met and married his wife Nancy. Jean and Nancy now reside in St. George, Utah. And his son Jean-Marie resides in San Marcos, Ca.
Ever since Jean-Marie Michalski was a child, he was surrounded by art due to his father situation. At 10 years old, he won a month long trip around the world, for taking care of his “at the time” single father. When he got home from his month long trip his father asked to see the photos from his trip. Jean-Marie responded, “I didn’t take any.” Regretting not taking photos Jean-Marie started taking pictures all the time, at first with a KODAK110 camera. Then a good friend of his dad how was a photographer and ran a photography Studio and a club in their town Perwez, Belgium showed Jean-Marie the basics of photography and showed him how to develop film in a dark room. Now Jean-Marie seems to always have a camera in his hand, sometimes driving his family a little crazy.
Jean-Marie also has always loved Cars. When he lived in Belgium, his house was next to the only garage in town. They sold new cars and fixed old ones and had a junk yard in the back. He used to sneak in and play in the old cars and help the mechanics that worked there.
For years people have complimented his unique style and his talent to catch those special moments with an artistic flare. You may have seen his work in Ghetto Choppers Customs, Old Cruiser Magazine or the flier for Bo Huff and many Local Bands. He’s now moved on to shooting weddings, Fashion Models and his new passion Pin-up Models with or without cars.
Jean-Marie aka Belgium moved from Belgium and has lived in North San Diego County since May 1, 1981. Now married with a lovely wife and 2 daughters, he’s started a business called Belgium Lion Photography about 3 years ago selling his art at street fairs, car show, and online gallery.

One-of-a-kind Interior defines this 65 Buick Riviera
March 29, 2009 by pikesan · Leave a Comment
House O Speed’s 1965 Buick Riviera.
“THE DEVIL’S DOLLHOUSE”
The are basically two types of rides in this world. The ones you proudly bring home to mother, and then, of course, there’s the other kind — the type you stealthily roll to the curb in with the engine killed and leave tucked in the shadows when you pick up your date.
The HouseOspeed-built 1965 Riviera falls squarely into the second camp. Once you’ve ridden in it, you’ll understand why.
Simply put, interior is swimmin’ in women. Vintage pin-up girls, to precise, the work of a man named Peter Drieben, whose sexy illustrations graced the covers of fifties stag magazines with titles like Whisper, Titter and Eyeful.
The stock headliner has given way to black angel hair, and gray glitter vinyl and orange piping on the seats to match the interior motif. The stitching is the handiwork of Fat Lucky’s Sean Johnstun, now the head upholstery guru at the Austin Speed Shop.
But lest you think that the pin-up girl interior is the entire story, let’s take a moment to touch on a few of the car’s other mods. The 401 nailhead was rebuilt to original specs, and fitted with period-correct Offenhauser accessories, Jet Hot coated stock exhaust manifolds and a throaty dual aluminized exhaust set-up with custom tips. Before returning to its rightful place bettween the front fenders, the Riviera’s rebuilt nailhead was color-matched to car’s colors and the spaghetti of factory wiring was cleaned up and tied down.
To keep tabs on the mechanicals, Mooneyes gauges were brought into the upper center console where the FM radio originally resided. Meanwhile, an upgraded sound system was buried beneath the seats and speakers strategically stashed throughout the interior. A joystick now operates the entire system remotely.
To help the little ladies keep their cool, a Vintage Air AC system was installed, and the car’s suspension was put closer to purgatory by way of an Air Ride suspension, originally installed by Gary Howard several years ago and since been thoroughly updated by John Henson of DB Rodz and Miniz.
The car’s gunmetal gray metallic paint was laid on by Horace Joseph while a mixture of flames, scallops and freestyle pinstriping were laid down by the Frank Palmer (who else?).
Originally purchased in California, the Riviera surrendered the its original black and yellow California plates after the Day family’s relocation to Texas. Shortly after arriving in Texas, I stumbled upon a pair of vintage 65 Texas plates that were too good to pass up. The three numbers on the plate that caught my attention? “666”. It was these plates, in fact, that inspired the car’s nickname.
Today, the Devil’s Dollhouse can be found slinking around the streets of Austin, Texas when not rolling into car shows to help promote Cameron’s hot-rod related businesses, HouseOspeed.com and Hotrodshiftknob.com.
One can’t help but wonder if Cameron’s teenage sons will be borrowing his Riviera for their prom dates. If they do, one thing will be made infinitely clear. They had better remember to park it in the shadows.
The Day’s know how to build a sweet ride. Check out their garage’s custom cars. Then, make sure to check out the the story MyRideisMe.com did about the Day’s other ride: 1965 Tiki Suburban and if you’re a Buick fan, check out Ed’s 1956 Buick Special.
David Perry’s Pinup Book goes to DVD: Hot Rod Pinups
February 12, 2009 by pikesan · 2 Comments
Written by: Erock805 (Erick’s Garage)
It opens like a shot, not knowing the music, it felt like motor head, loose, violent, and melodic and real…what you see is what you hear…a front engine rail blitzing through the lights. Smoke and raw fuel and flame blasting from the pipes…you can almost feel it in your chest. The track lights lit up the night just like you remember they did. You can almost smell the nitro… Perfect!
At this point, I am not even thinking about the pleasures of the flesh I am about to witness. All I can think about is the first time I heard that sound, felt the thunder and cried in joy as the fumes burned my eyes…
David Perry…creator of Hot Rod Pinups, the DVD, my new hero.
Then came little Ruby Rae, and a song that defined what I was witness to…a real live girl. Ruby quickly reminded me what I was here for. I’m watching a pinup video… a first for me. Sure, I’ve watched a ton of hot rod flicks, and gasser movies, they usually have a couple models, but never a video featuring pinups…
Back to Ruby Rae, once she started working about the shop, I quickly forgot all about the nitro. In fact her opening silhouette was enough to make me wanna propose. I bet that wouldn’t go over to well with the current luckiest girl in the world… Princess. Who am I kidding…no way, I ain’t gotta a chance. Plus I’m not sure any other girl in the world would have the patience to put up with me and my 5 car habit.
Back to the show…Hot Rod Pinups is the Real Deal. Real cars, real life style and real ladies. The ladies are not the waif plastic Paris Hilton ladies so mainstream today. Nope, real live girls that are all hot rod: Beautiful curves, lines and features – Ladies that have style, comfort and strength. A moving experience.
Now I am no rockabilly king, I am a rocker, a metal head yet I enjoy most music and I know what’s good. So believe me when I tell you this soundtrack has something for everyone, its ruff, melodic and surprising. The tunez from Gearhead Records fits the scene on the screen better than most of the Vids I have seen. There are few things worse than watching a good video and not being able to tell one song from the next and for Hot Rod Pinups, each song, while in the same genre, transitions well. The mix breaks up the babe-mania, and adds depth to the experience. It takes you up and down and all around town. I need this sound track for my ride.
Everything about this flick kicks. The Sets are real. The tattoo and auto shops, parties, drags, and Bonneville are suited perfectly for the fair pinup vixens that drive us wild! These are real venues for real girls. This DVD is well put together and everything worked: locations, sets, wardrobe, cinematography and tunez. It all comes together like pb and j. its right so go getchya one!
Gearhead Records is my new brand…well done Mr. Perry I dug it. I wonder if I can continuous loop a DVD?
You can grab the DVD and Hot Rod Pinups I & II all from Amazon.com. The DVD was listed at $18 bucks and the books are both around $23.
Pinup Photographer Mitzi at work in Arizona
February 6, 2009 by pikesan · 2 Comments
Turns out pinup photographer Mitzi from Mitzi & Co is a St. Louis Rams fan. That’s great for me for a couple reasons: The Cardinals whooped the Rams here in Arizona and Mitzi’s coming to town!
I’m a hack pinup photographer. Who am I kidding, I’m a hack photographer, but I’m trying. That’s why I was jazzed when I got a chance to meet Mitzi again and see her working. I also helped out getting my buddy Erock to bring his traditional styled 34 pickup down for the shoot. I wanted to use Bonnie, my 27 roadster, but she had other plans (damn webers!).
Mitzi on the other hand is a pro. In stead of seeing the, “Work it, yes YES, oh you sexy bitch!” style of Austin Powers, Mitzi was super calm and professional. She shot slowly and purposefully and I could tell the girls were comfortable and having a good time with their “Pinup for a Day” photo shoot.
Here are a few of the shots taken outside Mitzi’s buddy Adam’s Electric Haven Tatoo/High Life Pomade shop in Tempe, AZ. Adam’s also a member and has posted a few more shots of his Chevy 210 he calls “Shirly”
See all of Chez’s pinup pictures here and then check out Marissa Lynn here.
Thank you Mitzi and thank you ladies for a great experience. Next time, let me hold the camera a while!

Che'z said: "Well, headin out to Az. was one of my best ideas and I love doing Pinup , so I exchanged times and info with Mitzi and she made the trip worth it, the shoot, the rides, the people were all amazing!! Oh yea, the desert was incredible too!"

Marissa Lynn said: "This was my first pinup shoot and luckily I got to experience it with such a laid back, professional photographer. Liz did an amazing job with hair and makeup and the overall look came out stunning. Mitzi is amazing and I am looking forward to working with her again!!
How to be a pinup model – 2 secrets revealed!
June 27, 2008 by pikesan · 3 Comments
2010 Pin-up Girl Wall Calendars
Pinup models go with Hot Rods like whipped cream on pumpkin pie. That’s why you’ll find hot rods, muscle cars and even some hot bikes shot with the much finer sex in the pinup photo gallery at MyRideisMe.com. It just seemed like the right thing to do! Then, with the popularity of the killer photos of one of my favorite models, Zoe Scarlett done by Photographer: Dirk Behlau and, the most popular blog at MyRideisMe.com about the Hot Rods and Pinups II book shot by David Perry, I start thinking… why don’t I shoot some pinup pictures?
Piece of cake, I’ll let you in on the secrets: 1) Get a hot girl and 2) pose her next to a rad hot rod.
Done. Except for a couple of things… imagine this: Excuse me hot rod owner, I think your wife’s hot. She looks like a pinup model. Can I take some pictures of her? At that point, either you’re feeling the left side of your face caving in or you’ve met Don Simms and you’ll be fine. Don and his buddies from the Throttle Kings are some of the coolest kats you’ll meet at the LA Roadster Show, but that’s a different story (that WILL be told later).
For secret #2, Don supplied the hot rod too. The guys nearly got it all! When you making a garage at MyRideisMe.com Don?
Enough of that, dig the pics. Not bad for the crappy camera I had to use. (It’s always best when your digital SLR takes a crap at one of the best shows going.)
Thank you Doreen for being my first.
To see all of the pinup pics, go to the pinup photo gallery.
These pics work great as a desktop image, so click on them and save it. Make sure you tell a friend where you found it!
