Give me a Description

Give me a Name

Engine bay gutted

Old engine.trans removed and sold for scrap.

suspension bush failure

A common fualt on 50 year old benz's is the failure of the two front suspension bushs and this is typical.

in the shop ready to start..

Removing the front of the chassis

Chassis,firewall and floor removed.

Front cross member changed

W108 crossmember mocked up

Fender mock up

Front fender mocked up to determine actual panel shape

rear bulkhead

This remains in place but is trimmed to fit the coupe body.

Frame for rotisserie

80x80 box section used to make a frame so the car can be swung from it.

W111 front panel

Half stripped in tank to remove old paint and rust

bench

I built a bench from old scrap to support the floor when i cut it in half

Floor cut

320mm removed from floor to shorten it to suit coupe body.

Sill section welded

The outer sections welded back together first

i had to pull the outer parts back in to line them up correctly so they could be welded

Tunnel and floor not welded yet

i am going to spot welded the floor and the tunnel as per original

Welding up the sill.

Pull the halves together

The two halfs had to be pulled together with a chain block .

Progress... - i have started to trim the unwanted peices from the Floor pan and the coupe body. To do this sort of Job to a car in Australia you must obtain permission from the government.. Communism is alive and well here. To get this permission you must hire an engineer to submit the proposal to build. i picked a friggen Dud. The governemt knocked me back and until i can reach the department involved to see what their problem is ,I am stuck with my car half finished. I refuse to get stressed .... Check out the latest pics of the work involved. Read More...
More parts arrived - After a long search i finally found a trans for this project. It's because i have a Mercedes engine ,an M100 6.9 liter which uses it's own beefed up unit. I thought of other units but the cost factor outweighed any advantage..LOL! Read More...
The start - Imported W111 Coupe, very rusty underneath but complete . Read More...

Hi kastoo,Not at this point in the project (which is held up because another for someone else.) but fitting later engines into mercedes of this vintage is very easy because the later automatic trans are physically smaller than the original DB automatics. The biggest issue is the size of the drive shaft, ther original is small in diameter and fits through a tunnel in the floor pan,a later shaft won't fit so the trear of the tunnel needs to be swapped for a later version with a bigger tunnel . it's not difficult, just time consuming. heres one I did last week. http://picasaweb.google.com.au/mercmad6.3/MarcusW111M117Swap
