Kaiser Manhattan "Kustom"

How To name : MaxJax 2 post lift install
How To description : This is how I installed my new lift in my 2 car garage. This lift is made for typical 2 car garages with 8' ceilings. It lifts high enough that you can sit under the car on a rolling stool to work on it. This is going to change the way I work on cars, no more floorjacks and jackstands!
Tools List :
  • Hammer drill
  • 5/8" masonry bit
  • 7/8" masonry bit
  • Chalk line
  • Torque wrench
  • Framers square
  • Coat hanger
  • Measuring tape
Parts List :
  • 9 quarts ATF link
  • 1-2 extra 5/8"-16 bolts link

Unload

These are some heavy parts!  They are shipped on a pallet and are really well wrapped and banded.  Fortunately I have access to a loading dock and forklift at work, so I just had the whole pallet dropped into the bed of my Tacoma.  When I got home I had a couple of friends help me unload the parts one by one.  You definitely need two guys to get the posts out of the truck, and watch out for sliding parts!  Once the posts are unloaded one person can easily roll them around on the wheels.

Initial assembly

The lift is mostly assembled, but you do have to put a few parts together.  I had to install a few fittings and mount the hydraulic pump to the cart.

Layout

I roughly set the posts in place and then pulled in a few cars to make sure the arms swung under without any problems.  I spaced them apart 122", which seemed to fit my Tacoma, E46 BMW and Kaiser pretty well.

Once I was happy with the rough placement of the posts, I laid down chalk lines on either side and squared up the posts to each other.  I also tried to get them as straight to the garage as possible.

Drill concrete slab

You have to drill ten 7/8" holes all the way through the slab.  This takes a pretty big hammer drill or you will be there for hours.  I started with a 5/8" pilot hole 2" deep per the instructions, then bored a 7/8" hole all the way through.

Check slab thickness

I used a coat hanger with a small bend at the end to make sure the slab was at least 4" thick.  It's pretty weird to see the dirt under your house.

Insert anchors

I used a Shop Vac to clean out the holes, then pounded in the inserts with a sledge hammer.  This is where you will want an extra bolt to hammer on.  They only send you the required ten, but at least one will get destroyed while pounding in the anchors.

Torque anchors

Next I torqued all of the anchors to make sure they were fully seated in the concrete.

Hook up lines

Plug the hydraulic unit into the wall and plug the lines into the posts.

Bleed the system

If you don't bleed he system it will lift unevenly.  It took a couple of tries but I got it all bled out. I read online that if you can't get it to bleed you can put a car on the lift and the added weight will help.
