Australia, as part of the World Time Attack Challenge, the first of its kind, pitting the best the world has to offer in Time Attack.<\/p>\n<p>What exactly is Time Attack?\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s simply taking your car around a road course\u00a0as fast as you can and recording the fastest single lap time, hence the name Superlap.\u00a0 There are various classes that your car might fit in.\u00a0 Currently most of the vehicles that compete today are of the Japanese or European make.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s where the hot rodders with the stopwatches comes in.\u00a0 Time Attack has almost zero muscle cars.\u00a0 Wat up wit dat?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/WTAC-R-Magic-RX-7.jpg\" Mazda RX-7, one of the fastest Unlimited Time Attack cars in Japan.\u00a0 Time Attack began in Japan in the late 1980&#8217;s.\u00a0 It was a chance for top Speed Shops (they&#8217;re referred to as Tuning Shops, not Speed Shops, but I have to talk the hot rodder talk haha)\u00a0in Japan to build the fastest street cars and compete against each other for the fastest lap times at the various Japanese circuits.<\/p>\n<p>I want to discuss the potential\u00a0for muscle cars\u00a0to compete in Time Attack in Part 2.\u00a0 Part 1 is to introduce you to Time Attack and give you a glimpse of how the big boys go fast.\u00a0 There are different classes that\u00a0cover cars\u00a0from mild to wild states of tune.\u00a0 The wild is what gets me pysched!\u00a0 The Unlimited or Pro class (depending on what organization you talk to)\u00a0is where the fun is at, well, fun and $$$.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As any car nut will admit, it&#8217;s not cheap to go fast.\u00a0 I&#8217;m all about the &#8220;Do-It-Yourself&#8221; mods, but when you wanna go faster than anyone IN THE WORLD in any kind of racing, its gonna\u00a0cost you some\u00a0money.\u00a0 The faster you wanna go, the more its gonna cost ya.\u00a0\u00a0The Unlimited Superlap cars are some of the most advanced builds\u00a0around.\u00a0 I showed you a wind tunnel test months back of\u00a0THE fastest Unlimited class vehicle, the\u00a0<a title=\"Wind Tunnel Tests of the Cyber Evo Evolution\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/internet-barn-find-8-japanese-cyber-evo-in-the-wind-tunnel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cyber-EVO Mitsubishi Evolution<\/a>.\u00a0The name of the game in Time Attack is Grip, Aerodynamics, and putting the power down (AKA grip, see a theme here?).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return above by MotorMavens shows the blue Cusco-Tomei Subaru WRX STi Unlimited class car compared to the\u00a0Club Class\u00a0Mitsubishi Evolution.\u00a0 Notice the Subaru&#8217;s lower ride height, huge rear GT wing, front carbon splitter vs the mostly stock bodied, higher riding (notice the daylight under the car) Evo.\u00a0 The Subaru&#8217;s track width and body have been widened as well.<\/p>\n<p>Are there\u00a0any Reno Air Racing fans out there?\u00a0 These Time Attack machines remind me a lot of the\u00a0Reno Unlimited Gold racers, such as the P-51 Mustang, Bearcat and Sea Fury.\u00a0\u00a0The idea is\u00a0the same, take a factory hopped up sedan (or Warbird) and have almost free reign on modifications.\u00a0 The Reno Racers double and triple the horsepower with boost (or displacement), clip wings, cut down canopies and smooth surfaces to improve aerodynamics and remove lots of uneccessary weight.\u00a0 Sounds a lot like what the Time Attack cars, right?<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Unlimited-Gold-P-51-Reno-Air-Racer.jpg\" quick summary of the Unlimited Time Attack class rules to give you an idea:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>All Vehicles must be available for purchase from a major manufacturer currently\/previously as a factory OEM vehicle. \u00a0No Open Wheel vehicles, Clubman or Kit cars allowed, as determined by the Promoter.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Body kits are allowed. \u00a0The use of Carbon and FRP is allowed. \u00a0Headlights may be replaced with air intakes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Engine modifications are open except no nitrous. <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0Transmission, Driveline, Suspension, Brake, Wheels, Interior modifications are open.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>All vehicles must use tires off the approved list (street tires).\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>All vehicles must run Unleaded Fuel, E85 is allowed. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>All Vehicles must be equipped with an Approved Roll Cage and<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0Approved 5 Point Harness as a minimum.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can see in these pictures that\u00a0aerodynamic development with big downforce is the goal.\u00a0 Here is the Japanese Superlap &#8220;King&#8221;, the Cyber-Evo Mitsubishi Evolution.\u00a0 I hear this car is owned by a Dentist.\u00a0 Just the front end alone is a work of engineering geek art.\u00a0 3 layers of carbon canards, carbon front splitter, carbon air intake &#8220;headlight&#8221;, wide forged aluminum wheels with sticky 265\/35\/18 street tires under widened fenders (made out of&#8230;you guessed it, Carbon Fiber).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/WTAC-Hi-Octane-R34-Skyline-was-Australias-hopeful.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10039]\"><img \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This is the Hi-Octane R34 Skyline GT-R Time Attack machine.\u00a0 Dig this HUGE under body panel\/front splitter.\u00a0 The Skyline is Japan&#8217;s Supercar with its all wheel drive, turbo inline 6.\u00a0 This car is rockin&#8217; about 600-700 horsepower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That should give you all a\u00a0look at Time Attack and some of the top cars from around the world.\u00a0 Next time I wanna explore the potential your Muscle Cars and Hot Rods have for time attack competitions.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s one example I found just to give you some inspiration.\u00a0 This is literally the only American car built for Time Attack I could find in a quick Google search.\u00a0\u00a0A Fox body Mustang is the perfect choice&#8230;.anyway, more on that in Part
