The Bonneville truck was to be a budget build but that didn&#8217;t quite work out&#8230;\u00a0 I consider myself to be a good mechanic and a reasonable engineer.\u00a0 I have worked on\u00a0my cars my whole life \u00a0and was a mechanic in the Army.\u00a0 All of that said,\u00a0I had never built a race car. I had re-built engines, but never built a race engine.\u00a0\u00a0 So what made me think\u00a0I could build a record setting race truck?\u00a0 Maybe it was more balls than brains.\u00a0 And why a Jeep?\u00a0\u00a0 That question\u00a0I know the answer to.\u00a0 I could have built an S10 using 4.3L parts.\u00a0 They had a NASCAR series that used the V6, so a whole bunch of speed parts are available for that motor. But what fun is that!?\u00a0 Building something from a catalog was not me. Like most car guys\u00a0I wanted something\u00a0 different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm&#8230; sounds like My Ride is Me!<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-480.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10669]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12010\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Speed Week 2010 LSR3 Jeep Commanche\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-480.jpg\" alt=\"Speed Week 2010, LSR3 Jeep Commanche\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-480.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-480-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-480-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-480-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I finally found a 2WD Comanche with a 4.0L engine and manual transmission on Ebay in Texas.\u00a0 We won it for a top bid of $930.00\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It had 256,000 miles on it, but my son was able to drive it home to Illinois from Texas with only 1 roadside repair.<\/p>\n<p>In the production racing class that the Jeep fits in you have to use a version of the engine that originally came in the vehicle.\u00a0 So\u00a0I had to build a Jeep\/AMC inline 6.\u00a0 Some street performance stuff was available to give you a 20% or 30% gain, but for Bonneville we would have to at least double the horsepower.\u00a0 We were in uncharted waters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-486.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10669]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12153\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Speed Week 2010 Land Speed Racing Jeep pickup in the E\/PP class\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-486.jpg\" alt=\"Speed Week 2010, Land Speed Racing, \/PP class\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-486.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-486-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-486-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-486-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCheck the blacked out look of this Jeep&#8230; Looks like Darth Vader!\u00a0 Mean!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a Plan, we had a vehicle, we had a date we had to meet (Bonneville Speed Week 2009).\u00a0 The weeks and months that followed were crazy.\u00a0\u00a0 I was doing the engineering and project management.\u00a0 My (23 year old) son was doing most of the fabrication.\u00a0\u00a0 As Speed Week 2009\u00a0got closer everybody was wrenching.\u00a0 We did make it to Speed Week, but were unable to run due to a lubrication issue.\u00a0 Also\u00a0I probably over did things and ended up in the hospital with pneumonia during Speed Week.\u00a0\u00a0 We did get the truck through tech, and a good time was had by all, even the guy in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The story does not end there. \u00a0Over the winter the engine problems were resolved, things were fixed on the car. We attended Maxton in May and found a steering issue.\u00a0 The next stop\u00a0was to\u00a0be Bonneville Speed Week 2010 in August.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-484.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10669]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12155\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Speed Week 2010 4.9L bored and stroked inline 6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-484.jpg\" alt=\"Speed Week 2010, 4.9L, bored and stroked, inline 6\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-484.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-484-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-484-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-484-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To say the least this was a challenge.\u00a0 Maybe we should all challenge ourselves a little more, like the President that thought we should go to the moon.\u00a0\u00a0 I could say I am doing this for myself, but\u00a0I think that&#8217;s not completely correct.\u00a0 I think\u00a0I wanted to show my son that we are surrounded by opportunity and that in many cases you don&#8217;t know what you can do until you try.\u00a0 Our goal for this year is to go 185 mph at Bonneville, and in the next year or two to join the 200mph club.\u00a0 Hey! why not?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/engine.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10669]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12157\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"4.9 Liter Jeep inline 6 cylinder Bonneville race engine\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/engine.jpg\" alt=\"4.9 Liter, Jeep inline 6 cylinder, Bonneville race engine\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/engine.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/engine-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/engine-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/engine-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a close up of that sexy inline 6.\u00a0 I love the snakey header.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a one-off custom piece of course.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re gonna go 200 mph Pete, this engine looks like it is\u00a0a great base to reach your goal.\u00a0 I was blown away when Pete mentioned that he didn&#8217;t think he had enough compression to get the record.\u00a0 I asked him how much he had and it was like 13-14:1.\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 Talk about a serious motor!<\/p>\n<p>I chatted with Pete for a few minutes, snapped some pictures of the Jeep and headed off.\u00a0 Pete later shared his\u00a0Speed Week 2010 experience and related it to getting &#8220;schooled&#8221;.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure his experience at Speed Week is not unlike most at Bonneville.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-488.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10669]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12016\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Speed Week 2010 LSR3 Jeep Commanche in the pits\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-488.jpg\" alt=\"Speed Week 2010, LSR3 Jeep Commanche, Bonneville Salt Flats\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-488.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-488-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-488-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-488-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the first time on the salt for the truck, and for my son and myself as competitors and we learned a lot.\u00a0\u00a0 We did go 155 MPH, but the record is around 173 MPH for the D\/PMP class.\u00a0\u00a0 I guess you have to have a pretty big ego to think you can just build a car and go out and set a record (guilty as charged!).\u00a0 If we changed the rear end gears we could probably get it to 163, but that is still 10 mph\u00a0shy of the record.\u00a0\u00a0 One thing\u00a0I learned is that it is not just about the engine and setting a record.\u00a0 I saw lots of spins. I met people that had all kinds of problems, ignition, handling, fuel problems, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 I saw they had the engine out of the Blowfish.\u00a0 Not sure what the problem was.\u00a0\u00a0 My point is that people with a whole lot more money and resources had trouble just getting a car down the track. We got through tech without a problem, the car did everything we asked it to do, it went straight, the chute worked.\u00a0 We just didn&#8217;t have the right gears and enough horsepower.\u00a0 We have a whole year to work on that.<\/p>\n<p>All and all we are proud of ourselves, we did not achieve our goal of setting a record, but we understand now exactly what it takes.\u00a0 We get a passing grade on &#8220;Salt Flats 101&#8221;.\u00a0 The next course is harder.\u00a0 For &#8220;Salt Flats 201&#8221; you have to set a record\u00a0to pass.\u00a0 For &#8220;301&#8221; you have to get into the 200\u00a0MPH Club.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure what you need to graduate, maybe the big Hot Rod trophy for the fastest run of the meet.\u00a0\u00a0 All\u00a0I know is\u00a0I went to Speed Week 2010 and got schooled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Speed-Week-2010-483.jpg\"
