Last year, during my first trip to Bonneville for Speed Week, I had no idea how many Studebakers I would find out on the salt. I knew Studebaker\" data-image=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/1.sanchez.201.1958.jpg\" data-button=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img src=\"\/\/www.linksalpha.com\/images\/social_share_button.png\" alt=\"Share\" class=\"linksalpha_image\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/www.linksalpha.com\/scripts\/loader_iconbox.js?v=2.4\"><\/script><\/span><\/div><h3>Bonneville Salt Flat Racing Vintage Studebakers<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve spent any time at all <a title=\"Grease Girl at MyRideisMe.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/tag\/grease-girl\/\" target=\"_blank\">reading my posts<\/a>, you know I drive a 1955 Studebaker Champion Coupe. Last year, during my<a title=\"61st Speed Week But My First Visit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/the-61st-bonneville-speed-weekbut-my-first-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\"> first trip<\/a> to Bonneville for Speed Week, I had no idea how many Studebakers I would find out on the salt. I knew Studebaker coupes were long-loved in land speed racing for their aerodynamic bodes\u2014but it seemed like everywhere I turned there was another Studebaker!<\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019m finding out, Studebaker coupes have a longer history with land speed racing than I would have guessed. The Bob Bourke-designed streamlined body first appeared in 1953, drastically different than any other car produced. By August of 1953, a \u201953 Studebaker Hardtop made its first official run out on the salt. By the following year, the \u201953 Coupe had broken its class D\/CG record at 114.430mph. In fact, <em><strong>the first full-fendered stock-bodied car to break the highly coveted 200mph mark was a Studebaker coupe<\/strong><\/em>, in 1964. The official record was set at 201.744mph by Pisano Brothers\/Jim Short in a \u201953 Coupe with a 365c.i.d. Chrysler supercharged engine racing in the B\/S Gas Coupe category.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12119\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Record Breaking 1953 Studebaker Coupe at Speed Week 1958\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/1.sanchez.201.1958.jpg\" alt=\"Record Breaking 1953 Studebaker Coupe at Speed Week 1958, land speed racing, bonneville\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/1.sanchez.201.1958.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/1.sanchez.201.1958-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/1.sanchez.201.1958-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/1.sanchez.201.1958-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even better, is that although the record wasn\u2019t official until 1964, it was actually six years earlier, in 1958, that the Studebaker Coupe first broke the 200mph milestone! Belmont Sanchez\u2019s #201 (pictured above, courtesy of<a title=\"The American Hot Rod Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrf.com\" target=\"_blank\"> The American Hot Rod Foundation<\/a>) barreled down the salty white, reaching a timed speed of <em><strong>210mph<\/strong><\/em>. Running on Chrysler power, this Stude blew all others out of the water! Unfortunately, as it was trying to prove its record, the engine failed and it went unconfirmed\u2026leaving everybody waiting for six more years! (Learn more about<a title=\"Bonneville Salt Flats: Learning How-To Set A Record\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/setting-speed-record-bonneville\/\" target=\"_blank\"> How-To Set A Record<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>As time passed and Detroit eventually began clueing into aerodynamics to produce sleeker cars, Studebakers continued living up to their Bonneville legacy. That legacy can still be seen today <em><strong>At this year\u2019s Speed Week, my Speed Seeking Studebaker count was 14<\/strong><\/em> (and I\u2019m quite sure I missed a couple) with two different Studes setting a <em><strong>new class record<\/strong><\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>Not only were there coupes, but Trucks and Avanti\u2019s made appearances as well. Then of course there were Spectator\u2019s Studes, and I\u2019m proud to say mine can be included in that category, as Studie made it to the salt with me this year!
