If you&#8217;re a Ford fan, when you see, &#8220;Holman Moody&#8221; your\u00a0curiosity\u00a0peaks (or it probably should).\u00a0Here&#8217;s a quick summary of the Holman Moody\u00a0evolution&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>John Holman moved from the sun of Cali to North Carolina to run Ford&#8217;s NASCAR team in 1956 and teamed up with Ralph Moody. Soon after, Ford begins to dominate NASCAR amid rumors of cheating. By 1957, still winning, Ford and other OEM&#8217;s pulled out of racing after the AMA (Automobile Manufacturers\u00a0Association\u00a0 banned auto companies from using race wins in their advertising.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/SEMA-show-2012-1963-ford-Galaxie-4.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[21069]\"><img class=\"alignnone  wp-image-21070\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"Holman Moody 1963 Ford Galaxie driven by Fireball Roberts\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/SEMA-show-2012-1963-ford-Galaxie-4.jpg\" alt=\"ford galaxie nascar, ford galaxie history, 1963 ford galaxie, 1963 galaxie, fireball roberts\" width=\"575\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seeing an\u00a0opportunity, John and Ralph formed the &#8220;Holman Moody&#8221; partnership in 1957, then Moody, with refinance money from his airplane, spent $12,000 to buy up Ford&#8217;s surplus racing gear. $12k!!\u00a0Assembling the, eh&#8230; leftovers, Holman Moody Fords won their first two races in 1957. From there, with a shop on the\u00a0Charlotte\u00a0Douglas Airport they started making all parts needed for race cars, later selling those parts to other racers. Eventually, they teamed with some of the best race drivers ever, including Edward Glenn, &#8220;Fireball Roberts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>From July 1957 to January 1974, 39 drivers combined for 366 races, 83 poles, 93 wins and 2 overall\u00a0championships. Tubular headers didn&#8217;t come around until 1965, so all that big block hot air raced through (extremely\u00a0desirable\u00a0and rare) factory cast iron Fomoco 427 exhaust manifolds.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/SEMA-show-2012-1963-ford-Galaxie-3.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[21069]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-21070\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"Holman Moody logo on the trunk of this 1963 Ford Galaxie\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/SEMA-show-2012-1963-ford-Galaxie-3.jpg\" alt=\"holmon moody, ford galaxie history, 1963 ford galaxie\" width=\"575\" height=\"619\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quoting from\u00a0NASCAR.com:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Perhaps the greatest driver never to win a NASCAR Winston Cup title, Roberts accumulated 32 wins, including the 1962 Daytona 500, in a career that spanned 15 seasons before his untimely death in 1964 from injuries incurred in an accident at Charlotte Motor Speedway.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The name, &#8220;Fireball&#8221; came from Robert&#8217;s fastball! He was a pitcher in his younger days, and I found he was also called, &#8220;Balls&#8221; for his driving style.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Fireball Roberts&#8217; racing career doesn&#8217;t have a happy ending.<\/p>\n<p>On May 24, 1964, at the\u00a0World 600\u00a0in\u00a0Charlotte, Fireball Roberts, after qualifying eleventh and starting mid pack, spun avoiding a collision between\u00a0Ned Jarrett\u00a0and\u00a0Junior Johnson on lap 7. Roberts&#8217;\u00a0Ford\u00a0Galaxie\u00a0slammed backward into the inside retaining wall, flipped over and burst into flames. \u00a0From the video below, Ned Jarrett confirmed that Roberts was climbing out of his car yelling, &#8220;Oh my God Ned, help me! I&#8217;m on fire!&#8221; \u00a0Roberts died weeks later from severe burns and complications.<\/p>\n<span class=\"vvqbox vvqyoutube\" style=\"width:575px;height:355px;\"><span id=\"vvq-21069-youtube-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sh5zAPMxnSU\"><img src=\"http:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/sh5zAPMxnSU\/0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Preview Image\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span>\n<p>A tragic story, but that was racing in the 60&#8217;s. It was dangerous and 1000 times more exciting with the REAL cars racing.
