I know lots of you fellas think ladies are only around to look pretty &#8211; and while I may not be too hard on the eyes \u2013 I\u2019m not coming around just to pose on your shiny (or primered) hood. <em><strong>I\u2019m here to get under it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sparkin\u2019 my under-hood adventures is my <em>1955 Studebaker Champion<\/em>. After wanting a classic car for years, I finally leaped in a couple of years ago during a move from car-less San Francisco to car-necessary Los Angeles. Now I don\u2019t know about you, but it\u2019s my opinion that you shouldn\u2019t drive a classic if you don\u2019t want to work on it. And I <em>wanted<\/em> to\u2026the only thing standing in my way was the fact that the only thing I\u2019d ever done to a car was change a tire (and even that somewhat unsuccessfully).<\/p>\n<p>When I picked \u201cStude\u201d up in Utah she had an original Studebaker V8 engine. My very first job was to put back together the Carter carburetor that had already been taken apart. After puzzling it around for awhile I ended up picking up a new Edelbrock instead. Next up was installing a new fuel pump, which seemed to go smoothly until I found out later that the gasket had gotten twisted when I put the pump in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2602 alignright\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Girl and her hot rod Studebaker\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bbridge2.jpg\" alt=\"Girl and her hot rod Studebaker\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bbridge2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bbridge2-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bbridge2-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Now that I have ya\u2019ll thinking I\u2019m a complete idiot \u2013 I\u2019ll let you in on something. Ready?! Not everyone was born working in a garage! Not everyone knows what a manifold is or even the difference between a V6 and V8! Crazy, huh!?<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of my ignorance, \u201cStude\u201d eventually did get on the road \u2013 although not without a little help (okay a <em>LOT<\/em> of help &#8211; that original engine had to come out and was replaced by a 383 Chevy.) In fact she was driven for the first time mere hours before taking off alone on a cross-desert trip to last years <a title=\"Traditional Rod and Music show\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivalasvegas.net\" target=\"_blank\">Viva Las Vegas<\/a>. (Keep an eye out for us at this year\u2019s Viva!)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve come a long way from changing a tire &#8211; and am learning new things all the time. I\u2019m making it my job to share those new things with the rest of you. Because we weren\u2019t all born with wrenches in our hands \u2013 and heck, if I can save some of your male egos by keeping you from looking like knuckleheads well then that\u2019s great.
