Ronnie Goodwin understands this influence and after studying hot rodding history, he knew what he had to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img title=\"2014 Grand National Roadster Show, America's Most Beautiful Roadster contender owned by Ronnie and Deb Goodwin\" alt=\"2014 America's Most Beautiful Roadster, 2014 Grand National Roadster Show, GNRS, AMBR\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2014-Grand-National-Roadster-Show-AMBR-4.jpg\" width=\"575\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While Ronnie could understand his buddies loving Tri-five Chevrolets, Corvettes and Mustangs, he was smitten by the all time classic hot rod, the 1932 Ford roadster, a one-off classic that became the darling of hot rodders almost from its introduction. When Henry Ford relented and allowed his Model A to have some needed refinement, the future was set and hot rodding as we know it began in earnest. The Deuce was born.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ronnie wanted to create the quintessential hot rod, the \u201932 roadster that if you woke up in 1957 and looked out the window, this is the car you would see. He was particularly swayed by the likes of Ray Brown and Walker Morrison, early hot rodders whose cars continue to bring true joy to a hot rodder\u2019s heart even today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to honor the influences of famous cars from that time within this one build.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2014-Grand-National-Roadster-Show-AMBR-5.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[26257]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1932 Ford Roadster -AMBR Contender for 2014\" alt=\"2014 America's Most Beautiful Roadster, 1932 Ford Roadster, custom chevy small block\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2014-Grand-National-Roadster-Show-AMBR-5.jpg\" width=\"575\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2014-Grand-National-Roadster-Show-AMBR-6.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[26257]\"><img title=\"1932 Ford Roadster -custom steering wheel and interior\" alt=\"1932 Ford Roadster, hot rod steering wheel, 2014 Grand National Roadster Show, GNRS, AMBR\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2014-Grand-National-Roadster-Show-AMBR-6.jpg\" width=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1952, a writer for Hop Up magazine noted, &#8220;Photography alone cannot express the true beauty of Walker Morrison&#8217;s roadster, which appears to be nothing unusual, but is, in reality, one of the cleanest examples of roadster building in Southern California.&#8221;\u00a0 Ronnie knew this is where he needed to go and he set out to get it built. Of course, this would be easier seen in his head than discovering who might be able to translate his vision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-3.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[26257]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1932 Ford Roadster contending for 2014 AMBR\" alt=\"1932 Ford Roadster, Deuce Roadster, 2014 AMBR Contender, Tennessee Hot Rod\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-3.jpg\" width=\"575\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately Ronnie had made an acquaintance with Michael Young in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Michael <a title=\"Street Rods by Michael\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srbymichael.com\/\">(Street Rods by Michael) <\/a>\u00a0has been building rodding iron of all kinds for over 30 years and they had bumped into each other at various Tennessee area car shows and events and the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. As Michael describes it, \u201cevery once in awhile you get a customer who is over the top with enthusiasm. Ronnie Goodwin is one of those customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to build a period piece 50s style \u201932 roadster,\u201d Michael explained. \u201cAnd he kept dropping names like Joe Nitti and Tommy Foster (pioneering hot rodding legends) and wanted some elegent metal work along the lines of McGee\/Scritchfield (more legends). He showed me exactly what he wanted\u2026so the task began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cRonnie\u2019s enthusiasm became my excitement,\u201d Michael said and he went right to work ordering a Brookville Roadster body, grill shell and windshield stansions. From there Michael got frame rails and suspension parts from Pete and Jake\u2019s to weld up the frame and build the car\u2019s foundation. Next came Wheel Vintique Smoothies (16 x 4.5 fronts, 18 x 5.5 rear) from Coker Tire who also provided their Excelsior Stahl Sport 500R16 front tires and 700R18 rear tires. This was going to get the roadster to just the right stance Ronnie was seeking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-12.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[26257]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1932 Ford Roadster contending for 2014 AMBR -custom pintstriping\" alt=\"1932 Ford Roadster pinstriping, Deuce Roadster, 2014 AMBR Contender, Tennessee Hot Rod\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-12.jpg\" width=\"575\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gary Mizar handled the incredible pinstriping on the roadster. Gary formerly worked for Ed Roth and it was only appropriate he handle the delicate detail for this historic throwback.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-13.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[26257]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1932 Ford Roadster contending for 2014 AMBR - headlight pinstriping\" alt=\"1932 Ford Roadster pinstriping, Deuce Roadster, 2014 AMBR Contender, Tennessee Hot Rod\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-13.jpg\" width=\"575\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That stance proved to be one of the bigger challenges and Michael chose to go with \u00bc \u00a0ellipticals in the rear which allowed him to adjust them to exactly the right height. Next up was the front end which had to drop at least an additional inch so he cut the top out of the cross-member, creating a flat surface which then required a flat bottomed Walker Radiator. Additional massaging followed (modifying the C-notch, raising the trunk floor 5\u201d for suspension travel and exhaust clearance and pinching the nose 5\/8\u201d on each side to close up the gap between the frame rail and the hood side towards the front of the grill), but eventually the roadster sat perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cRonnie really liked the looks of LimeWorks front headlights and shock mount bars along with their Crestliner steering wheel and column combination,\u201d Michael said. \u201cHe wanted airplane style shocks which have a flare at the end of the bell. Pete and Jake\u2019s had just released their I-Rod shocks and they put a little extra bell in them for us. This really made them look great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-5.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[26257]\"><img title=\"1932 Ford Roadster contending for 2014 AMBR - custom interior\" alt=\"1932 Ford Roadster interior, Deuce Roadster, 2014 AMBR Contender, Tennessee Hot Rod\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-AMBR-Contender-1932-Ford-Roadster-5.jpg\" width=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More details and more planning began to shape the roadster into what Ronnie was set on achieving\u2026the ultimate, classic hot rod. Michael said it was fortunate Ronnie and his wife Deborah were such easy customers to work with that the task, though challenging at times, made the build pretty enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cRonnie\u2019s most definite idea on the whole car was the interior,\u201d Michael explained. \u201cHe wanted a dark blue with cream color and gold piping. I thought he was crazy but B &amp; B Auto Trim in Shelbyville did a great job and the final interior is just awesome.\u201d Michael used a 53-56 Ford F-100 gauge cluster from Classic Instruments to round out the interior appointments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cFor paint we decided to go with an old Ford color, Washington Blue and Ronnie\u2019s desire to have a white firewall turned into PPG Vanilla Shake for the engine area and the wheels. That color worked just perfectly with the blue exterior.\u201d The car sports simple flat poverty caps, but the engine block (a 383 stroker from BluePrint Engines in Kearney, NB) was painted bright gold. \u201cThat contrast ended up looking really great,\u201d Michael said. \u201cWe topped off the engine with a 3-2 Offenhauser intake and three Stromberg 97s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>So was the effort to emulate some of the best early hot rods a success? The reaction at the Grand National Roadster Show repeatedly described the car as a lesson in classic hot rod building with all the right pieces and details to make it a memorable roadster.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cIn my 30 years of building I\u2019ve not had an opportunity to have a car compete at the level of America\u2019s Most Beautiful Roadster,\u201d Michael said. \u201cI was humbled by it and was just happy to be in the running with such big league players as Foose (Chip) and Trepanier (Troy). It was a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>Sometime tradition lives on fondly, like a great old pair of boots that only seem to be better with age. Ronnie and Deb Goodwin\u2019s effort to capture classic hot rod tradition turned out to be a resounding success. And they didn\u2019t have to wait around to get things \u201caged\u201d just right. This \u201932 Roadster may just live on as the ultimate definitive hot rod in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>So is this the last time we see a Goodwin entry contending for an AMBR award. \u201cI\u2019m pretty competitive,\u201d says Ronnie. \u201cI\u2019d like another try at the AMBR some time in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Want to see some of the build images for this roadster?
