margin: 4px;\" title=\"Larry Volk discussing the finer points of Hemi powered Model A roadsters\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1-400x602.jpg\" alt=\"Larry Volk, Hemi, Model A roadsters, hot rod, 1929 roadster, traditional hot rod\" width=\"400\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1-400x602.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/1.jpg 531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;ll get to the 1929 Ford Model A Roadster project car in a second.\u00a0 First, let&#8217;s talk time warp.\u00a0 Larry and his family have been\u00a0into racing and hot rods since the early 1950&#8217;s.\u00a0 He started out drag racing\u00a0 and\u00a0dirt sprint car racing.\u00a0 His race buddy\u00a0<a title=\"Terry Nish Motorsports website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nishmotorsports.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Nish<\/a> invited him out to the Salt Flats in the late 1950&#8217;s\/early 60&#8217;s\u00a0and that was it for Larry.\u00a0 He&#8217;s gone every year since (unless it was rained out) and his life has become engulfed in the Salt.\u00a0 Currently Larry is in his second stint as President of the 200 MPH Club, Chairman of the Save the Salt Committee and\u00a0current holder of the SCTA Bob Higbee Award given out at the\u00a0Opening Ceremonies of Speed Week 2009.<\/p>\n<p>With all this and more, Larry&#8217;s garage is a museum of sorts\u00a0for the last 40 some-odd years of <a title=\"Larry Volk's Bonneville Racing History\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/volk-bros-1929-salt-flats-record-roadster\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bonneville Salt Flats racing history<\/a>.\u00a0 There are stickers, pins, plaques, posters, broken parts and trophies that adorn the garage and his living room.\u00a0\u00a0Then there&#8217;s the hot rod parts collection Larry&#8217;s been wheeling-and-dealing for during the last few decades.\u00a0 They&#8217;re all just for this car.\u00a0 The &#8217;29 roadster Larry&#8217;s been dreaming up\u00a0will be a traditional hot rod build, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Part skill and craftsmanship?\u00a0 Ok, so the car is not done yet.\u00a0 But, there&#8217;s plenty of work already done showing Larry&#8217;s attention to detail and well thought out passion.\u00a0 Even though I&#8217;m calling this story Part 1, it&#8217;s really\u00a0more like Part 5,924.\u00a0\u00a0 You see, Larry is and has been carefully and skillfully putting together this game plan.\u00a0 Larry&#8217;s roadster is to be his version of the perfect traditional hot rod.\u00a0 A hot rod that would have been right at home 50-60 years ago, using the hot rod parts of the day, the newest Hemi engine, with newer Ford 3 speed transmission, higher performing carbs, etc.\u00a0 Larry dreams of cruising the streets of Davis County Utah, taking the grandkiddies for spins in the rumble seat or\u00a0maybe letting his &#8220;2 Club&#8221; kids drive it? And of course, he&#8217;ll take it to Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats.\u00a0 As\u00a0Chairman of the Save the Salt Committee, Larry takes a bunch of trips out to Bonneville to check the salt conditions and report back to other hot rodders. Around Speed Week and the World Finals, there&#8217;s alot of folks waiting to know, &#8220;Is the Salt OK? Is it wet? Does it look fast?&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty boring 2 hour drive out to the Salt, found \u00a0west of Salt Lake City, so this dream rod will make the trip all worthwhile.\u00a0 Can I ride shotgun?! Ha Ha<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6425]\"><\/a><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6425]\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-6453 alignnone\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Larry Volk's Hot Rod Garage houses his 1929 Hemi powered roadster project\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17.jpg\" alt=\"Larry Volk, 200mph club, bonneville, salt flats, Hot Rod Garage, 1929 roadster, Hemi, Model A\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/17-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The goal is clear, build a traditional 1940&#8217;s to 1950&#8217;s-era Model A street roadster.\u00a0\u00a0The key ingredient to this soon to be road worthy hot rod is the 1955 Chrysler Hemi, which was actually used on the Volk Bros&#8217; 1929 roadster land speed racing car (no records, but Dallas was running 220+ in the 2 1\/4 when he felt it hiccup, so he hit the engine shut off switch, saving the block, but too late for the pistions). <strong> <\/strong>According to its ID # and &#8220;W&#8221; cast into the side of the block (see the &#8220;W&#8221; in the pic?).\u00a0 <a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/24.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6425]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6485 alignright\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Hemi block showing the &quot;W&quot; casting\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/24-150x99.jpg\" alt=\"Hemi block ID &quot;W&quot; casting 301 Polyspherical Hemi\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/24-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/24-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/24-400x265.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/24.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Larry tells me that its a 1955\u00a0&#8220;Spitfire&#8221; 301 cu in\u00a0Polyspherical Hemi engine used on the 1955 Chrysler Windsor.\u00a0 It was Chrysler\/Plymouth&#8217;s way to more economically take advantage of the Hemi engine design to compete with Ford and Chevy&#8217;s small V8&#8217;s, where before Chrysler had used its big displacement 6 cylinder.\u00a0 The Poly engine used a single valve rocker and a valve angle that was more straight up and down.\u00a0 Not quite the performance of the double rocker, full hemispherical engine, but great bottom to mid range torque, less weight, faster manufacturing and cheaper cost.\u00a0\u00a0According to my research on allpar.com, the &#8217;55 301 cu in Poly Hemi was a one year engine.\u00a0 In 1956,\u00a0Chrysler went to a 331 cu in Poly Hemi.\u00a0 But, of course, in traditional hot rodding fashion, the &#8220;Poly&#8221; heads got replaced with higher performing, newer design full Hemisperhical heads for Larry&#8217;s hot rod.\u00a0\u00a0This Hemi screams traditional hot rodding more than any other engine!<\/p>\n<p>At this stage of the build, Larry mocked up this sa-weet Hillborn Mechanical Fuel\u00a0Injection setup.\u00a0 When asked, Larry&#8217;d prefer to run 3 <a title=\"Carbs for your Hot Rod\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stromberg-97.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stromberg 97&#8242;<\/a>s\u00a0atop this beauty since mechanical injectors are a bit finicky and it&#8217;s no fun to carry a primer bottle when running a street roadster like what Larry&#8217;s got in mind.<\/p>\n<p>The body is of course steel made by Brookville Roadster.\u00a0 Color will likely be some\u00a0hue of black, either a satin or gloss finish, he&#8217;s not sure yet. He just knows it needs to be black, like a true hot rod should be.\u00a0 Larry worked years ago doing body work and has a friend with a paint booth, so he&#8217;d like to do the body work himself.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/11.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6425]\"><img class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6468\" style=\"margin: 4px; didn&#8217;t pay quite\u00a0that much back in the day when he picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>Wheels are Kelsey Hayes 16&#8243; wires and tires will likely be early style\u00a0dirt tracks, either Coker or Firestone.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/15.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6425]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6475\" style=\"margin: 4px; taillights are blue-dot 1950 Pontiac, the transmission is a 1939 Ford 3 speed manual, and brakes are also 1939 Ford, which would have\u00a0been period correct for the 50&#8217;s.\u00a0 It just wouldn&#8217;t be right to throw a 5 speed and disc brakes at this roadster.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/18.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6425]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6479\" style=\"margin: 4px;
