magazine, before it was even\u00a0known as hot rodding.\u00a0 <em>Throttle<\/em> was almost 100% focused on southern California Lakes\u00a0and Midget\u00a0racing.\u00a0 It was only printed for 1 year, 1941, and included\u00a012 issues.\u00a0 The bombing of Pearl Harbor turned the USA upside down and hot rodding all\u00a0but dried up for 3-4 years along with the magazine.\u00a0 <em>Throttle<\/em> never came back\u00a0after WWII ended.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Hot Rod Magazine&#8221; picked things back up in January 1948 with their first issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick look at <em>Throttle <\/em>through a Reprint book I purchased at The Rodders Journal website.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-11.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9426]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9428\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Throttle Magazine 1941 January issue cover page reprint by Rodder's Journal\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-11.jpg\" alt=\"Throttle Magazine reprint book by The Rodder's Journal\" width=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-11.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-11-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-11-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-11-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thom Taylor (check out\u00a0Thom&#8217;s website <a title=\"Thom Taylor Designs\" href=\"http:\/\/thomtaylordesigns.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ThomTaylorDesigns.com<\/a>), hot rod artist, was the person who spearheaded the effort to put together a quality reprint of all 12 issues.\u00a0 No small task considering relatively few copies were printed and the fact that they are almost 70 years old.\u00a0 That&#8217;s Old School cool!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a glimpse from the Introduction by Thom Taylor of just what kind of effort was involved in this project:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Jack Peters, who created Throttle and was its editor and publisher, was an enigma.\u00a0 Finding out what happened to him was difficult but also fun.\u00a0 Talking with Bill Burke<\/strong><\/em> (built the first belly tank lakester<em><strong>), Wally Parks <\/strong><\/em>(NHRA Museum in Pomona is named after him), <em><strong>Phil Remington and Louis Senter&#8211;even though their recollections were not real good, was a joy.\u00a0 There aren&#8217;t many left that experienced racing at Muroc and El Mirage before WWII, but fortunately there are many documented memories compiled by researchers and hot rod historians that will live forever.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-13.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9426]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9431\" style=\"margin: 4px; up their Model T&#8217;s and A&#8217;s were already in defense-mode.\u00a0 It&#8217;s obvious there were political and public threats on the hobby from the get-go.\u00a0 Check this quote from the very first page.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;This racing will go on and on and on, and our elders might as well resign themselves to that condition.\u00a0 If it is not taken care of in the open, with sponsoring associations attempting to work with state, city and county police officers at all times, it will be done on public streets and highways with a toll of disaster and tradegy for exceeding that little which has already marred its record.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Basically, he&#8217;s saying, we&#8217;re gonna race no matter what, so we might as well do this the right way!<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-7.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9426]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9432\" style=\"margin: 4px; racing was just as popular as lakes racing with talk of a 500 mile race, you may have heard of it?\u00a0&#8230; \u00a0the Indianapolis 500, will continue as planned, even though the world is at war.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Throttle-14.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9426]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9436\" style=\"margin: 4px; (that&#8217;s what hot rodders were called).\u00a0\u00a0I read the slang and the\u00a0nicknames for cars, speed parts, the people and car clubs and I just can&#8217;t help but smile, knowing the same passion exists today for the &#8220;hopped up&#8221; cars that roam the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Some things just don&#8217;t change.\u00a0 Check out page 23 above from the February issue.\u00a0 Peters warns <strong><em>&#8220;WARNING!&#8230;To all those interested in keeping amateur auto racing from being stopped completely&#8230;if even one club member is caught taking part in such foolishness&#8230;Do Your Part&#8230;Don&#8217;t Race on Highways or Streets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do yourself a favor and add this book to our collection.\u00a0 It&#8217;s probably my favorite book in my small, but growing collection so far.\u00a0 You can get it from The Rodders Journal web store.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, if Jack Peters were still alive, he might\u00a0ask &#8220;What are you doing to continue the rich hot rodding and customizing tradition alive?&#8221;
