Motorsports Park with its 4+ mile road course.<\/p>\n<p>Last night I hit up the 2nd Midnight Drag and Drift event of the year.\u00a0 RMR has been holding Midnight Drags since about 2001 or so.\u00a0 It was touted as a way to get the young punks off the streets and have a safe and organized way to race.\u00a0 I raced my first Civic at a couple Midnight Drags back then.\u00a0 A couple years ago though, the Drift Enterprise of Utah started holding Midnight Drift events on the oval track.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/section-D-sign-at-RMR-for-midnight-drift.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9879]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9881\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"Section D sign at RMR for Midnight Drift\" this sign was kinda cool.\u00a0 <em><strong>&#8220;Section D&#8221; for DRIFT!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The number of cars entered in the drag portion are probably 150-200.\u00a0 For the drift boys, there&#8217;s only\u00a0about 8-10 cars.\u00a0 The number of people watching the drag racing is probably somewhere around 1000+.\u00a0 The people watching drifting?\u00a0 1, maybe\u00a0 2.\u00a0 Ok, not that bad, but seriously probably less than 10 people.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Who knows.\u00a0 To me personally, drifting is 100x more interesting and more fun to watch!<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Midnight-Drift-tire-changer-and-pit-area-inside-the-oval-tracks-infield.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The drifters set up their &#8220;pits&#8221; on the oval track&#8217;s infield.\u00a0 Check out the white pickup truck, it has a tire changer strapped onto a trailer.\u00a0 You can spot to Nissan 240SX&#8217;s (S13 chassis) hatchbacks on the oval&#8217;s banked turn getting ready to run.\u00a0 Then there&#8217;s another S13 hatchback in the &#8220;pits&#8221; with a Toyota Cressida behind it with its hood up.\u00a0 Yes, your grandma&#8217;s Toyota Cressida.\u00a0 But, hey!\u00a0 The Cressy has rwd, an inline 6 and you could find a few with a manual trans (or swap a Toyota Supra manual trans and heck, a turbo motor while you&#8217;re at it).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/240sx-hatchback-drifting-the-banked-oval-at-RMR.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9879]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9883\" S13 hatch&#8217; was running what I think was a turbo RB20 (or maybe RB26), which is a Japanese Skyline engine.\u00a0 It definitely sounded different than the 4&#8217;s.\u00a0 He kept smoking from the front.\u00a0 Must have been rubbing the front fenders.\u00a0 He had good speed though.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/small-block-chevy-LS1-powered-FC-RX-7-at-RMR.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9879]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9885\" arrived, I heard what I thought was a stock car on the oval.\u00a0 Happened to be this small Chevy (LS series V8) swapped RX-7 (FC Chassis).\u00a0 This car hauled!\u00a0 He was by far the fastest and most skilled drifter out there.\u00a0 The sound of this beast grabbed attention.\u00a0 When he&#8217;d come out for some sideways runs, a few people watching the drag racing would look over.\u00a0 He also got pretty close to the wall.\u00a0 As he&#8217;d go by, you&#8217;d get hit by small rubber bits and smoke.\u00a0 Ahh yes, what a blast!!!<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Two-S13-hatchbacks-getting-sideways-at-RMRs-Midnight-Drift-event.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9879]\"><img \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This section is where the cars come off the oval and hit the apex next to the big orange cone where they head back onto the oval.\u00a0 The black S13 hatchback was SR20 (turbo 2.0L DOHC 4 cylinder Japanese engine) powered and was easily the busiest car out on the track.\u00a0 He lost his front AND rear bumper during the night.\u00a0 His lowness was just ride I guess.\u00a0 Ha Ha.\u00a0 He had good speed and knew what he was doing.\u00a0 He was fun to watch.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the first corner the drifters take and its up on the banked oval.\u00a0 You can see a hint of sparks from the inside rear tire.\u00a0 Getting down to the steel belts!\u00a0 This car certainly looks like your typical amateur drift car.\u00a0 First of all, its a Nissan 240SX (S13 chassis, 1989-94 production years), has mismatched wheels (usually they&#8217;ll have various wheel\/tire combos to use through the session to maximize track time I guess), stock body, lowered suspension, and something hanging from the rear towhook.\u00a0 In this case, it looks like a flash light.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myrideisme.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Marcos-first-drift-event-in-his-S13-coupe.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[9879]\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9889\" Marco and his clean S13 Coupe.\u00a0 Yes, another 240SX.\u00a0 I met Marco back in the pits and snapped a few pictures.\u00a0 Look for those in an upcoming blog post.\u00a0 This was Marco&#8217;s first time out drifting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s mostly stock.\u00a0 It has a mild lowering job, some wheels and that&#8217;s about it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all you need to start learning the slideways of the force.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next time I need to figure out how to get closer on the action.\u00a0 Shooting through the fence was rough and I was too far away.\u00a0 Plus this was my first time shooting at night with the D90.\u00a0 I screwed up bigtime.\u00a0 I had the shutter speed set too fast.\u00a0 It clicked when I was looking at the pictures on the laptop back at home that they were too fuzzy\/blurry\/noisy.\u00a0\u00a0 Too fast a shutter speed doesn&#8217;t let in as much light.\u00a0 Lesson learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You guys wanna see more drifting?\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking of
