OCCA Labor Day Cruise

posted by pikesan

Story by Devin Squire (Devin's all Ford Garage) Well, I just got back from the "Orange County Crusin' Assoc.'s "Great Labor Day Cruise" in Costa Mesa, California. The weather was great, 80 degrees at the warmest & the 60's at night. We go there a couple of days early to enjoy some vacation time in southern California. We will spend a day just cruising Pacific Coast Highway, from Huntington Beach down to Laguna Beach, stopping at some of the Surf shops, or stopping at one of the many eateries to get some fish tacos....(Wahoo's shrimp tacos...mmmmm). Once in a while, I'll actually take one of my surfboards out in the water & try to surf...key word here is "try". OK, now back to the car show. The car show itself is on Saturday & Sunday, & Monday being the day they hand out awards & trophys. Some of us actually start lining our cars up in the parking lot at the fairgrounds on Friday, so we can be the early birds in to get a good parking spot. The Embassy Suites in Santa Ana, is the host hotel, &...

Over My Shoulder… Making Hot Rod Art

posted by pikesan

Please enjoy your brief, but meaningful and entertaining, look "over the shoulder" of painter Tom Fritz as he makes what I think is my favorite piece of Hot Rod Art to date (and he's got alot to like!). Over My Shoulder... Making Hot Rod Art Written By Tom Fritz (Car and Motorcycle fine art) One of the side benefits of working at my art is that I’ve been blessed with the development of an extended family of very close friends, a rich variety of both men and women who support me in my self-inflicted torture. And as sit here in front of yet another blank canvas trying to figure out the combination of what I am and what the world needs, I’m reminded of all the conversations in which I’ve been asked, how hard is it to make my art, or how long it takes me to make it — in which they try to get a handle on how I put a painting together. "...lets face it – starving can become a nuisance. ." These questions invariably come up at shows and in order to portray the illusion...

Labor Day on the Coast – 2008 Primer Nationals

posted by pikesan

Written by: Erock805 (Erick's Garage) -Primer National Show Pictures also by Erock Not sure if there’s a better way of spending a Labor Day weekend then in Ventura, California at the Primer Nationals. Why is that you say? Well first of all, Ventura breathes blue collar. Nestled between the grime, glitz and plastic of LA and the pure money and luxury of the uber-rich Santa Barbara lies a little beach town ripe with local color. Ventura has resisted the flow of dough from its northern and southern brethren. Urban sprawl has yet to conquer its pockets of agriculture, manufacturing, and overall laid back attitude. It remains the sleepy beach town, where both free time and surfing are worked into one’s daily schedule. Sure you can find a restrauntuer who supplies the finest wine and a $30 dollar steak or fufu lorange, but I will stick to a great burger, an amazing shake and unrefurbished bowling alley. Old Town Ventura is still a real old down town that has yet to be bombarded with food and clothing chains. Stroll around to a few of the antique shops and you will...

September Pinup of the Month-Victoria Vengeance

posted by pikesan

These pictures of Victoria Vengeance posed next to Bo Huff's 1950 Mercury custom say cool and caution at the same time. Heavy on the caution cause the MyRideisMe.com pick for September Pinup of the month is only partly a pinup model. She's primarily a burlesque performer and a lucha libra wrestler! In her words, "Yes, I'll kick your ass and look hot while doing it." That link above is wikopedia's explanation of lucha libra wrestler. I had no idea. Now we know she's interesting, sexy and I imagine fun at a party! I mean, could she be uptight and no fun and wrestle? Plus the burlesque performing lets you know, she's got confidence. I like confidence. Get to know Victoria at her Lucha VaVoom web page, Lucha Hot-ness or you can also see her at her myspace page. If you'd like to see a clip of her burlesque, try her myspace page or any of the shows she's got planned. Her burlesque is, "A fusion of traditional striptease and dynamic theatrical-style." Starting the month of October with a performance at The Bordello with the Devils Playground, then Masque on...

Church of Hot Rod II – Congregation’s Growing!

posted by pikesan

UPDATE: 10/10/09 - I've been getting a few calls and emails about restarting Church of Hot Rod. If interested, leave a comment here or reply in the forum. Ah brothers... It was another fine couple-o-Sundays. Cool morning air and hot coffee strong enough to peel paint off our vintage rides. After notifying a few people at the Chandler/Gilbert Community college car show, I expected there to be a few more members. I've also been fulfilling my duties as an elder in the church by notifying RoddinandRacinTV.com and cruisinarizona.com. If you're looking for a great excuse to get out of bed and meet some fellow rod and custom car enthusiast over on the East side of town on Sundays, please come on over. Time and Place: Every Sunday morning at 7 AM over at the Starbucks in downtown Chandler. The address is: 1 San Marcos Place, just west of Arizona Ave, south of Chandler Blvd. We're kinda hard to miss, just look for the Hot rods! Can I hear an AMEN? For winter (yea right, it's still in the 80s in November!) we're meeting at 8:00AM.  Feel free to email...

16 Years old on Woodward Ave Circa 1968

posted by pikesan

This story is written by Paul Schram. I met Paul after he left a comment at one of my first (and most read) blogs at MyRideisMe.com: The Real "Silver Bullet" - 2007 Woodward Cruise. The comment said: "True, not true, fact, fiction, legend, Only Jimmy and maybe I know. I have heard many stories..." Being a curious (and somewhat desperate) blog writer, I contacted Paul. After all, talk is cheap. Needless to say, it wasn't just talk! Paul was there. He knew the people and was a big part of the scene. I'm fortunate that this is the first of maybe 4 posts Paul will contribute about his time and his memories from Woodward Ave. back in the late 60's. Here's his first post, a bit of an introduction: Imagine being 16 years old, in love with cars and anything to do with Drag racing. Imagine living just a couple miles away from Woodward Avenue in the suburbs of Detroit. Imagine that it is 1968, the explosion of muscle cars from the Big 3 are hitting the streets of Detroit. On top of all that imagine you work at...

2008 Route 66 Car show, Flagstaff, Arizona

posted by AzAmber

Written by AZAmber (Amber's Nash Metropolitan "MetroSxl") There’s nothing better than saying goodbye to the Phoenix heat and heading up to the pines to look at some cool rides. The 2008 Route 66 Car show was held Sept 5-7 in downtown Flagstaff, and I have to say, this historic town was a great backdrop to showcase some 375+ cars. Amongst the crowd were many of the cars you would expect to see, like the old Bel-Aires and T-Birds, but a few unusual rides made quite an impression as they lined the streets in front of antique shops and mom and pop delis.   There was also a smattering of “tricked out” newer PT Cruisers and the members from a Corvette Club on hand to look at. In a grassy patch in the center of the town square, a few food and souvenirs vendor stands were set up and a DJ from a local radio station played oldies while some fresh squeezed lemonade topped off the day. According to the program, the weekend was full of activities for car enthusiasts. All in all, it was a great way to beat...

Scott Fisk, Car artist and Car-tooner

posted by pikesan

The artists and illustrators I've featured on MyRideisMe.com all are super talented and I could easily recommend them. In talking and getting to know them, I'm seeing a trend in the people that make art, especially car art, their living. In talking with Scott Fisk from Studio 669 and CAR-TOONER.com, I've found some of the same important features I see in Brian Stupski from Problemchildkustoms.com and from Jimmy Smith from Jimmyshotroddesign.com and it's my suggestion you look for these 2 qualities in your next artist: A true passion for all things cars. A unique style they're proud to use. I think you'll hear these qualities loud and clear after reading my talk with Scott Fisk. Scott gave me his regular bio for starters. Like many other car artist, he's been drawing his whole life finding inspiration from rod magazines and one of his instructors while getting his Fine Art degree in Signage and Graphic design in Boston. Struggling through college, Scott recalls drawing for drinks on cocktails napkins. He says, "I was good for about 3 drawings, then the quality started to go down hill, but the people loved...

Lead East 2008 – Customs, Music, & Non-Stop Partying

posted by Bubba Harmon

Lead East in Parsippany, NJ is definitely not like any other car show that I have ever visited. Actually the guys and girls over at Appleton Productions Inc., the company that produces the show, like to say "Lead East is NOT a car show, it is a party, a 50's party!" And you had better be well rested before you attend this party or you won't survive. Because, the party is pretty much non-stop from Thursday to Sunday night every Labor Day weekend. The event, billed as the "World's biggest 50's party", emphasized the music of the 50's with Doo Wop groups such as Kenny Vance & the Plantones, Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, Little Isidore, and many more playing in the Hilton Ballroom. Rockabilly groups such as The Greyhounds and The Razorbacks also cranked it up to annoy the neighbors. Keeping everyone informed was the job of DJ Jerry "The Wolfman" Burst as he played the tunes and made announcements broadcasting through a low power FM broadcast and being piped to the very large speakers set ontop of the hotels. This was great because Lead East actually encourages everyone...

Deuce of Spades – The Hot Rod Movie

posted by pikesan

How long has it been since you were excited about a car movie? Looking back there were a few good car movies, (Who remembers Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry) especially my all time favorite "American Graffiti". Has there been or will there ever be a car movie with such massive appeal and with an equally massive following? Released in 1973, American Graffiti still spawns clone cars and I saw "John Milner" (Paul Le Mat) at this year's Grand National Roadster Show. Wikopedia's got a ton to say about American Graffiti, but none more amazing then this: Graffiti is the highest cost-to-profit success in film history. When I first saw the trailer for Deuce of Spades, the first thing I thought of was American Graffiti. Deuce of Spades is a true car movie and it's focused purely on hot rods. I can't wait. I'm not saying they're similar, because they're not! Faith Granger, the woman (yea, a woman) behind Deuce of Spades tells me, " American Graffiti is a feel good movie about cruising and coming of age... and having fun." Deuce of Spades, on the other hand, is "An...
