Kinda a waste , but it is still looks SICK!
True, not true, fact, fiction, legend, Only Jimmy and maybe I know.
I have heard many stories…
That is one mean machine. I’d love to drive it! It just needs a trailer hitch.
No.
Pike-san thanks these blogs are what keeps me coming back. I really enjoy the unique rides and articles you put out!
How add your article to digga.se?
I like the website, cool slide show. I got more pictures on my website of the #72 piloted by Brady Dohrmann.

I am a childhood friend of Josh’s and I’ve been trying to push him to do more with his art since the beginning. Hopefully your blog will help push Josh’s work to the next level! If you haven’t already forwarded this to Josh I am emailing him the link right now!
These pieces are great. You have a great talent there and could be competition in future to Alan. Keep experimenting and you will find your way.
Yes !!
I glad sombody feels the same. The swap a vw shows used to be fun as well now every body wants a billion dollars for rusty un restorable crap and they try to sell it to you as nos. Where did all the fun go as the economy slides i think people are more to spend at swaps vs ebay and parts sale web sites . I also think that the me generation got to have it now people rarher by reprodutcion pieces rather than try to make right and old part instantgratification. What will the future bring on line car shows never leave your house just use web cam? who knows but I miss the days of bargins in the swap and the treasure hunt!!!!
CAn you tell me where you got your car body from. Thank you very much. Darrin @ bcg Streetrod fabrication
Hey Darrin,
From the doors forward, that’s original 27 Touring that’s been sectioned to make it more narrow. It’s a tight fit in there with 2 adults. From the doors back, that was constructed by someone in Minnesota, I think. I’ll have to check again with the guy I bought it from. I get asked that alot. I did modify it some by adding a pie-shaped piece in the back. It leaned the rear panel back just a bit and made it much more comfortable to drive in.
What’s BCG Streetrod Fabrication?
Well hot damn. Ain’t that sexy? I’m sorry, but I gotta go with Rory’s rod — I’m just another highschooler buildin a Model A rod, so that’s probably why.
They’re both gorgeous though. Gotta love these cars!
went to the Good Guys today and saw your roadster….very cool…the 26 ford coupe i am building as a nostalgia street rod will have a pinto power plant also….ford ranger auto trans and differential with four wheel disc…..no body mods, full fendered and renning boards…..the project is 4 yrs old with the body on the rolling chassis.

What a show This was the first year I had a car to actually drive into the grounds. Man what a feeling I am ready to build a new car now !! Thanks again to the crew of myride is me. Craig was letting kids or “future hotrodders of america” sit in his car and check it out that was way cool. I think some of the dads were jelous lol Had a great time look forward to the next show.Other than some sore getaway sticks and a little sunburn was awesome .

Glad youmanaged to get your ride out to the show. I work the show both as part of the host club and as a Good Guy rodders rep so i didn’t have much time to visist. I hollered at you once as I blasted past on the golf cart.
It was the biggest show yet, and I didn’t see any cars ididn’t want to own!
Thanks for joing in!
Larry
I want to hear about the van and what those tail lights are from.
Great story!
Do you often take pictures with your toe in them. . . ??
Come on Craig, I did more than take the picture… I also threw away your old (but good)fuel pump. Then dug it out of the trash. Goodguys was fun!!!
I first heard about these guys when I was into rc cars and batteries was what it was all about so I stumbled upon a123systems website and then the killacycle website this thing is mean. you think oh its battery powered its gonna be quite but when you hear the motors its a whole new kind of sound of raw power, when you think powerful vehicle you expect to hear some stomach rumbling ear bursting exhaust this is nothing like it but instinct says that sounds powerful….
this is my most favorite video of theirs so far I think it is just because you can see plasma splash out of the rear casing of the motor at throttle lift…

Hi: It was nice to meet you at the Tucson GG show, and the shots of our families cars were super! Just a brief correction. The gauges in the pictured 32 roadster originally built by Doane Spencer and restored by SoCal Speed Shop for Bruce Meyer were not done by either me or Bruce Abbott. The gauges that Bruce and I provided were for the 32 roadster Doane was working on at his untimely death, and I was contacted by Kirk White to provide the gauges for the SoCal project for Kirk’s friend Dennis Higgenbottom. The Spencer2 roadster was a featured 32 roadster at this years Grand National Roadster show. and was also seen at the Los Angeles Roadster Show this past Fathers Day. Thank you for letting me clarify this matter. Terry Seaholm
Terry,
Thanks for the correction. By the time I talked to you to get the facts, I was plum worn out from 3 days of the show. I’m glad we could get the facts straight.
Evel’s Leap of Faith
Something truly worth noting about EK’s life
On April 1, 2007, Evel appeared on The Hour of Power televised services at Dr. Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral to give his life to our savior, Jesus Christ. With a religious upbringing, it was only a matter of time before he would return to the roots of his raising. Evel declared his newborn faith in Christianity and was baptized in front of over 3,000 people during the televised show. As always has been the case, he spurred following, as several hundred others also came forward that day to be baptized as well.
Thanks for coming to our meeting I am running a little behind getting back to you. Now I’ll have a little time with the shows slowing down. Then we can start again in Jan. Your site is really neat your right on we all needed a web site like this. Thanks again.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS

“compare a roller cam lobe to a flat tappet lobe, you can see the roller cam has a larger radius at its peak, holding the lifter at max lift for a longer duration”
Complete nonsense.
Perhaps you might try some BOCES courses on geometry?
Thanks for the comment Panic, however, isn’t it kinda shitty to say that it’s “Complete nonsense” then you don’t enlighten us with the facts?
Maybe you’re still finishing your geometry course?

nice pics on the headers, my question involves the front suspention on that rat rod. it has been my intention the last year or so to build affordable every day driver 4 cyl replica ratts on the OR coast. and was wondering if you could pass on any rescources in the way of websites for clean bolt-up systems like i spied in your pics?
or if you have the time thanks ,craig
Hi Craig,
That’s my name too!
I’m glad you noticed the suspension. I had several people tell me that wouldn’t work before I did it. Glad I didn’t listen cause that was 3+ years ago! The main problem was that the shock/headlight mount is cantilevered, meaning it’s not supported correctly or triangulated as a good frame would be. But, it works!
I built it and I’ve never seeing that exact setup anywhere. There are alot of pictures in my garage here to see what I’ve done. The only thing you can’t see is the bolts that hold on the mount also attach the spring. I should write a blog about that but I’ve already done so many about my car!
Shoot me another message if you have more questions. I’ll help you as much as I can.

Great story Newt. Awesome
Newt, must that be exited to be so close to so much power and speed. Do you think you can pursuade Jen to tell her side of the story? She must have some details about her feelings, sitting between those huge tires at that speed.
yes I have a comment, it is intersting how the car was available in 75 ???
I owned the silver bullet from approx. 1975- 82ish. Aside from many photos I have when I owned it, my name was entered to the Secratary of State and when I did this, the original name on the title before I transfered it to me was J. Addison. This can be obviously verified by the current owner H.Sullivan. I purchesed the car from Darious Ball of Hazel Park who was running the car at least 1-2 years before I bought it. The car at that time was painted corvette white and if anyone would like to see pictures feel free to contact me.
As to the motor, there would be no proof of original oqwnership due to the fact that serial numbers were never recorded and since the car came with a 440 originally it would only be at best speculative. Regards , M.Stevens
i knew a guy in texas that ordered a new 1965 green D220 in 1965 with a 426 hemi. i say ordered it, it may have been dealer installed. they were a rich ranching family. i nevergot to ride in it but saw it around town for about a year. heard the engine thrashed. i was in high school and into hot rods so i remember it well. could have been one of a kind.

Dang man, up to this point, that Collins dude’s cars were ratrodderiffic, but the ‘38 and this lil’ shivvy roadster are muy, muy suavecito!!
I hear ya on the money. I am currently unemployed and hoping to “pass” an interview soon! I had a Flacon. A 1961 2 door. I sold it to get a truck that I in turn sold. I can’t seem to find a car to hold on to, one that I really like. I’d choose the Rambler over the Falcon too. The Falcon was a cool looking rdie but it ended there for me. I just didn’t like it. It seemed difficult to work on due to access issues. I really hated the fusebox. If I had known how to rewire it I would have moved it. Now all I have is a minivan and my wifes PT. I want a third toy, maybe someday.
Its all true ladies and gentleman he is in jail awaiting trial and to be honest things do not look good for him with three federal counts. And Donahoe Racing was closed down and the inventory was bought out by Icon Vehicle Dynamics look them up and give them a call they will let you know in fact it is Kreag Donahoe of Donahoe Racing…What a shame!
30 years ago my very first car was a 62 2dr wagon. Ever since I get a little pitter patter in my old heart when I see a Falcon. I hope someday to find another to customize with my sons. If you have a line on one (the cheaper the better) feel free to email me @ whigfarmer@yahoo.com. Thanks for the memories!
Hey; Thanks for the pic’s of my 1972 Pantera on the First Generation Camaros of Arizona car clubs Iraqi Veteran Thank You- A Covert Op Project. I had to call my brother in-law and tell him about his 1965 Mustang on your website…Too cool… Pat Lynch
It was fun to participate in the First Generation Camaros of Arizona car clubs Iraqi Veteran Thank you car show. I appreciate you showing pictures of My 1965 Mustang. Your readers might be interested to know that this Mustang has been in the faimly since new. In fact my wife, Mary, and I drove to Reno, Nv. 41 years ago and got married in this car and yes I am still marreid to the original wife.
It was great to take the whole family to this all American event. To see the look on Corporal Foster’s face was priceless! My husband, Paul, is in the First Generation Camaro Club and I am proud to say that he donated parts and time to this worthy cause. This is what it’s all about folks….helping to put a smile on the faces of those around you!
How would you like to do a re-build of that puppy? Just remember in aircraft engines every single nut or bolt has to be secured in some manner (safety wire, cotter key, one time use nylon insert nut, etc.).
Nice story! I think what you experianced is a flash-back from your HOTROD previous life! The HOTROD scene was started by guys that came back from the war. They thanked their lives to these flying machines. When they came back they started to modify the cars that were around, giving them more power: The Hot rod was born! When you like these aircafts with all their details it tells that you are cut out of the same wood as the old skool Hot-rodders! (I’m planning to build an aluminium bodied rivited ROD myself.)Thank you for this story.
holy crap this morning i saw my buddy Jared “chunk” Foster who i was in Iraq with when he was shot by the .50 cal on tv with his Camaro and i was amazed i knew he had it but didnt know that this was getting done its awesome to see him recieve this. he is a great guy and definately deserves it. OOH RAHH Chunk
I had just recieved a 81 Honda CB900f, its great condtion but looking to modify
i like the rear end on the above picture where can i order that from
It was indeed a pleasure to lend my PR efforts to encourage media and enthusiasts to join in this celebration honoring someone who bravely served to protect each and every one of us so we can do wonderful things like attend car events. I’m glad to see the car community giving back and hope to see lots more this year. Lance will deliver my invitation directly to Jared to further honor him at the April NASCAR Nationwide race as my client’s team JD Motorsports (cars #0 and #01) honors a combat hero at each race all year. The Pentagon helps us locate the heros. I’ve found mine! Jared! I hope he wiill accept my invitation to be honorary team member for the day. Cindy
It was pleasure to help with this effort for a fellow service member.

No place to order it from. You’ve got to build it to ride it! Eddy did a great job with this bike!
Lets not forget there are many other Vets out there that could use some encouragement!
What a fantastic project to give to a generous and brave man. Semper Fi!! I am forwarding this to Qatar and to Iraq. The AZ Street Machines in Tucson would like to thank Corp. Foster for his service to our country. To all who participated in this project, you are special people who have demonstrated the American tradition of helping your neighbor.
Thanks to everyone who’s commented on this story. I’m grateful to be able to tell this story and I second the feeling that all returning service men deserve our thanks and appreciation. I hope this story and these notes show all of you we care. Keep the comments coming!
You have told this story so well, thank you for doing this. You were the only family I spotted riding in a roadster that afternoon how fun. I spent the day helping with the parking
so I saw just about everyone who came in. What a great crowd I spoke with so many nice people. The support for this young man was just overwhelming. I believe Lance and John left us with a challenge Sunday. That is to reach out and say thank you to other Vets with broken bodies and shattered dreams. Bless them all.
The Vets are our heroes, but those who support them are a huge part of helping them wake up everyday to the hell that they’re in and feel motivated to do the job that their country sent them to do. What an awesome thing you folks have done. Thanks for doing it! Mark Randall- Formerly OS2 Randall USN USS Fletcher DD-992 1988-1992
I was at this event….great turn-out and it was awesome to see something being done for a returning injured war veteran. Remember, THESE KIDS volunteered to go fight for what they believe in! We all can be VERY PROUD of these young people!
As many of you may know, I helped coordinate the event along with John Bauler and various individuals from our club, the First Generation Camaros of Arizona, as well as a few members from The Cactus GTO car club. I was the person basically handling the logistics of this entire project and I can tell you this—there was no lack of support from the citizens of this country. It was stunning to see the amount of financial support we received, as well as the support from the parts industry. I personally have never seen a group of people this large and this focused on rewarding one of our soldiers—and Corporal Foster was the conduit to those many others that are serving as we speak. Through his sacrafice, we could honor them all, by just helping him. And he is a great guy !!! He’s a class act and I can truly say we are taking care of one well-deserving young man. For everyone that contributed to this project, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. More pics of the event are available at: http://hotrodplanet.spaces.live.com/default.aspx
[...] Last but not least, I want to share a few more pictures of Corporal Foster’s newly redone Camaro. Very cool to see Dwayne and his work featured here… Truly a class act, and by far one of the most talented folks I know! From pencil on paper to paint on canvas, this guy can do it all, and VERY, VERY WELL.
Killer work with the Nintendo DS… just outstanding!
Dude! Wow! those drawings were off the chain!!!!
I striped that ‘56 gasser at the top of the page at that show. I’ve been to the last two Main St. cruises and they never disappoint! Such a blast.
Very cool stuff. Wish I had something worthy of one of these…
It’s okay….
You Understated what a great guy DOUG is, understandably ! Really a great kid, runs a fantastic business.
I got a set of those for my Fairmont. Should be hot at the dragstrip. I can program in my E.T. for the tower.
LOL, I wana get a set for when I am in the burn out box. Yeah.. what up.
Cool wheels! I don’t mean to offend though but I think the LT1 is a mistake. Put the LT1 in the Rambler. You did so much work on that Pinto Four and all that heart and soul into the headers and carbs. It really adds to the hone built look of the car I mean after all it is Pinto Baby but with the LT1 it won’t be Pinto baby any more. With the dubs and the LT1 it will be Yawn…another show car.
oh man you got me! i was like, ‘you’re putting those on the roadster?’…dude…
those belong on the wagon!!
APRIL FOOLS
I was wierded out by the cheap “rendering” at first and I thought ….Well, anything is possible! Then, I got here and remembered the date! GOT ME!
I’m getting a great response by email and here in comments! I got alot of folks with this story! It’s not as good as when I read (and believed) that Toyota had purchased the Oldsmobile name. A sucker’s born every minute!
Actually I was planning on commenting about how damn cheesy that video is.
pot smoker
Bitchin’! I’d like to advertise on the left front wheel, if available… or if the spare is cheaper, well…
…and 0h man…. that rendering rules.
Dude… you ALMOST moved up a notch in my book. Ha Ha
Whoa, in this case I’m glad to be a fool! I really like Pinto Baby and it really bothered me to think it might look like that.
PLEASE tell me that was April fool. It would be a disgrace to screw up such a fine roadster as yours with those silly looking wheels and another boring small block.

A flat tappet cam can be formed to have a max lift similar to a roller cam; however, because of the rollers, the slope of the lobes on a roller cam may be steeper then the slope of the lobes on a flat tappet cam. The steeper slope the slope of the lobe, the faster the change in valve position. The faster rate provides the opportunity to create cam profiles that are almost unachievable, and less reliable, with a flat tappet cam.
In fig 2, a flat tappet and roller cam are compared. From this diagram, one can see a significant difference in the profiles of the two cams. The roller cam has a slope that is almost vertical, while the flat tappet is very egg shaped.
Of course, all cams cannot be generalized from one example. However, comparing the most extreme (and functional) profiles, the roller cam is typically steeper. It does come down to geometry, but the concepts seen here are based in physics…
“assume this is some kind of misunderstanding”
Yes, I see you still don’t understand it.
[...] When Leeds showed up with it at the Antioch Billetproof show last year he darn near stole the show. We’re kind of curious about where he got those Toyo tires in that size. If you really want a treat, go listen to it run. [MyRideIsMe and MyRideIsMe] [...]
Don’t read too much into this. The duration is significant as well as max lift. The roller cam may or may not have a larger radius than the flat tappet cam when the radius is at its max length (it all depends on the particular grind). The idea here is that the roller cam has potential for longer duration. Just before and after max lift, the lobes on a roller cam may have a larger radius then the lobes on a flat tappet.

An incredible series of books! While a magazine feature might give you an overview of the finished car, with an occasional in-progress teaser shot, these books really answer a ton of questions…. the stuff that makes you yell “how’d they do THAT??!” when you see the car.
I had read the volume on the Aeroliner from Posies, and was just amazed at the level they took every part of the car to… there were things I hadn’t seen on the car, and details that the average builder may have over-looked that kept me going back and studying.
The photography alone in this series is worth the price, and the behind-the-scenes insight is just more value thrown on top. Well worth it, in my opinion. Very insightful, entertaining and interesting. I’ll definitely collect the series.
Credits for pictures doesn’t need to be given. These are just the most recent photos taken for fun. They are not the most professional, but I am very interested in this line of work, and I know that you would be happy working with me.

The “Build Book” series is truly insightful. Not my first choice of cars to feature, but that’s not the point. These books offer insight as to what went on during the build. These publications are genius and definitely something to hang onto.
As readers of anything “hot rod”, I think all of us try to eek out any “how’d he do it” tidbits we can from most of the published stories we see. That is the mission statement of these books, again, GENIUS.

Sorry I had to roll early… but damn nice turn-out!! Great group of guys, and one HELL of a stubborn windshield.
This whole story puts what MRIM is all about: Car people building cars! Simply awesome, Craig…
So when do we hit the old girl again??
Great bunch of guys & as you can see
the team got a lot acomplished.
Let’s all bring our spray guns next time
& shoot some paint ! =)
Hey where was my invite??????….jeeesh!!…..this trigger man knows how to wrench too…=]
plus I’ve been laid off of work for the past three weeks…..errrg!!!!
ps: I’ve got a shot of the Comet Wagon in the picture gallery….hint hint!!!
thanks for putting the picture of my blue 66 impala ss on your website, my grandfather promised me the car at nine years old. and i’ve been driving it for 35 years.
thanks again! (keep up the goodwork)
This site is awsome it shows all the nice cars Arizona has to offer. I love going to the car show on 83rd I go just about every other saturday and its allways awsome!!!!
Looks like I misses out on a fun time. Your falcon looks pretty clean and straight, good project car!
Just my 2 cents worth… a supercharged mustang cobera motor will drop right in and will fit under the hood. Plenty of power and OBD2 system means you could pull into any Ford dealership and gets parts and service. It’s a clean set up and suprises everyone to see late model stuff in old iron.
In hind sight, I would have put that motor in the Superbaker and not have to cut the hood.
We are looking forwart to seeing more Spotlights on your project!
take care
Kevin
It was great coming by and hanging out to drink with all the boys! Thanks for putting in a word for “Hotbrod”….
You were a great host at your Falcon Strip Party, and I enjoyed meeting all your buddies! Fun times, and let us know when you have an assembling party! I know the clock is a ticking!!!
It was nice to see you at LAR, and we will definately talk more about the “Hotbrod” Apparel line.
Hmmmm. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. A REAL Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible would be the car with the VIN and Broadcast sheet and TITLE of a REAL Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible. Original numbers matching block or not.
Similarly, the REAL Silver Bullet is the one with the ORIGINAL VIN number and TITLE of the car that Jimmy Addison OWNED….. NOT the engine.
Race cars blow, swap and evolve engines all the time. It’s the CAR. Besides, as I understand, the “Car” had at least 3-4 engines BEFORE it was purchased No Engine/ Trans and restored.
Where are the other blocks? The original 440? If I find one I’ll build the ORIGINAL, no REALLY the Original Silver Bullet!!!!
I have seen these cars up close, the owner is in the Eastgate Classics car club from Southwest Ohio. These three vette’s are amazing, as is the whole story that follows the cars. Now, some might say that not every one of these cars can possibly be the VERY first off the assembly line for each year….”there’s a ‘55 in a chevy museum that claims to be the first one.” Well, let me briefly tell you that when all three of these cars were purchased, and restoration began, to verify authentistiy, the tags which contained the serial numbers were removed and sent out to be examened and x-rayed by those who document the corvette’s. It was determined that these three cars are 100% the first production cars off the line for ‘55, ‘56, and ‘57. This is just one example of many tests and unbelievable hours of reserch that went into documenting these beautiful cars.
Nothing much to say about the history and what not of the car but as as i was taking my normal walk of the woodward cruise aside from sitting at duggans irish pub with the owner and one al bergler and the old 396 hemi dragsters, i noticed the bullet as i was walking down the street and i could not take my eyes off of it. i must have returned about 5 or six times just to stare. it is a beautiful car and it makes it all the better to realize the history behind it. congrats to all the previous owners and the currnet, whomever that may be. it is a beautiful machine and hopefully it always stays that way.
[...] planned to put some paint on it and re-do the interior, but after inviting a bunch of friends over (here’s the story), my wagon’s now a stripped hulk sitting in my garage. Borderline panicking but not quitting, [...]
I think I’d just replace the cowl, Craig.
Just one guys opinion.
Looks like the project is coming along.
That POR 15 is good stuff. Works well.
Just don’t get any on you or your clothes,
cuz it ain’t comin’ off!
Keep us updated.
welcome to the world of having a wagon hulk in your garage. me likee :)
When you invited me to a “strip party”, this is not what I had in mind. I didn’t think I’d have to be one of the “strippers”. Sorry I missed it. Looks like a good time.
The fun has only begun!! It’s coming along nicely, and is a very solid car to begin with… I think the minor issues (like the cowl vent “fill” and the tiny holes) are a fair price to pay for such a good starting point.
We’ll dial in the right blue/blues, and nail something the kids will love, and that will make the car a stand-out everywhere you drive it!
Keep it up!! 112-degrees or not!
Too bad you don’t know anybody who could do a rendering of your car so you could get an idea of how it will look when it’s done… maybe there’s somebody on here that knows how to do them..
Hey Nelz, that’s a good point!! Actually, that’s like 1320 good points!
If only….
Don’t forget, there’s a sponsorship opportunity for a rendering (to help get MORE sponsors!) and for the radical pinstriping this bad bird’s gonna get. Either of you guys know anyone with those specialized skills?
pikesan
One thing I didn’t like about my 61 was the lousy fuse box and it’s location. If you have the same lousy location off the headlight switch, I’d make a separate headlight switch and put in a modern fusebox in an easier location.
i wanna do the site need a photographer in cape coral/ft myers florida. i am on myspace email is lorncircean@aol.com that how you can find me on there if you email me its the same sn but at yahoo. thanks!
Great show great cars.
See ya there.
Nice pictures!

Just an update on the ‘55, ‘56, & ‘57 serial #1 corvette’s. They did not sell at auction. They did not meet reserve price. The bid on the ‘57 was just over $900,000. The bid on the ‘55 was around $600,000 and the bid on the ‘56 was around $500,000.
ya did good here buddy…….=]
cya……………………….Swanee
Thanks Swanee, that means alot coming from you. Most of these were taken with my point and shoot too. I might have you touch up the top one.. I really dig that one.
Those pictures are off the hook man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how long did they take u ?????
Thanks, guys! Glad you enjoyed them… and thanks again, Craig for the kind words, and some added exposure!
Every drawing take its own amount of time… I just scribble out what pops into my head, and they run anywhere from just a few hours to 50 or 60 hours. On my site (www.problemchildkustoms.com), I’ve posted a bunch of older and recent work, and show a variety that fall in the above timeframes…
Thanks again, and look for more soon!
You’re making some good headway on that project, Craig.
Now, with such experience, you can help me when I peel the vinyl roof off of “Pinky”.
(It’s gonna be ugly under there!)
I haven’t been to the LARS in years, but I’ve heard that some of
the coolest stuff is outside the show.
Some great shots. Those point & shoots can take some great pics.
Thanks for sharin’.
That’s a cool project. I recently found a ‘63 Falcon wagon in Garland Texas that I’m thinking about buying, but it’s got some bad rust on the body and some rusted out freeze plugs on the back of the heads on the 260 v8. The guy wants a grand for it, but I’m not sure it’s worth it.
Anyway, your project looks cool.

looks good, nice work and good time of year for body worklol
My first car was a ‘65 Futura 2dr hardtop (no post). That was almost 40 years ago, and I haved never loved a car like I loved that on since. It was a 289 V8 which was pretty quick stock and I built it into the best street rod that a poor teenager could afford. My girlfriend at the time wrecked it and I ended up selling it to a body man. When I saw it after he fixed it, I could have cried. I still dream about getting another one.
Both of those Nissan trucks look nice
Very cool entry, Pike…. it sums it all up… It’s about the cars just as much as it is the people…. and when the line blurs, well, how cool is THAT??!
Nice rides, and from what you wrote, great group of guys!
Again, well said, man.
Look what I found digging through some court docs on the Unique Performance Vehicle Seizure, no wonder they canned the head detective on the case.
The whole mess with customer cars being seized was caused by insinuations from John Luft and a truck driver?
AFFIDAVIT FOR SEARCH WARRANT
THE STATE OF TEXAS [338 DESVOIGNES RD]
COUNTY OF GRAYSON [Denison, Grayson County, Texas]
The undersigned Affiant, being a Peace Officer under the laws of Texas and being duly sworn, on oath makes the following statements and accusations:
1. There is in Grayson County, Texas, a suspected place and premises described and located as follows: A barn, located at 338 Desvoignes Road, Denison, Grayson County Texas. The barn is red with white trim. There is a white picket fence around the barn. There are three barns on the property and the barn in question is the second one from the residence. According to Grayson Central Appraisal District the property is listed as Property lD 113345 (Real), Geo lD 074 1311010, G-1311 WRIGHT WILLIAM A-G1311.
2. There is at said suspected place implements or instruments used in the commission of a crime and,/or property or items constituting an offense or constituting evidence tending to show that a particular person committed an offense, to wit: Titling records, sales records, customer files, vehicles with incorrect VIN numbers and any other document or instrument used to facilitate fraudulent activity.
3. Said suspected place and premises are in charge of and controlled by each of the following persons: Linda Davis, owner as listed on Grayson County tax rolls.
4. It is the belief of Affiant, and he hereby charges and accuses that:
On or about the 2nd day of October 2007,at 13950 Senlac D rive Suite# 300, Farmers Branch, Dallas County, Texas, Unique Performance was found to be in possession of a red 1967 Ford Mustang fastback bearing VIN 7F01C216874. Said VIN belongs to a 1967 Ford Mustang hardtop and did not belong to the car in which it was assigned. During an investigation into this vehicle, Douglas Hasty, the owner of Unique Performance, ordered that it be removed from the shop and concealed on private property in Denison. Texas.
5. Affiant has probable cause for said belief by reason of the following facts: On October 2nd 2007 Farmers Branch Police contacted Douglas Hasty with Unique Performance in reference to a complaint that his company was not returning a customer vehicle. The customer had provided a faxed copy of the title to his vehicle. When Douglas Hasty showed this defective the vehicle in question, t he VIN number (7F01C16874) did not match the VIN number on the title issued to the customer (7F02C127565). On a 1967 Mustang VlN, the 3rd and 4th character of 01 means that the vehicle is a hardtop. If the 3rd and 4th character of the VIN is an 02, then the vehicle is a fastback. This model information was verified using http://www.decodethis.com and the validity of the information was verified by Sgt. Rex Wilemon of the Texas Department of Public Safety Since the fastback vehicle in question is bearing the VIN to a hardtop, it is displaying an altered identification number. Douglas Hasty initially stated that they had replaced the front clip of the vehicle. To do so without a TXDOT formVTR-68A (law enforcement vehicle inspection form) is a violation of section 31.11 of the Texas Penal Code regarding Tampering with Identification Numbers. A TXDOT title history of this vehicle revealed that no such form had been filed by Unique Performance. When informed of the potential violation Douglas Hasty stated that the wrong title had been issued to the owner and that the vehicle had not undergone a VlN number change. During my investigation into this event, I was contacted by John Luft, an attorney for Carroll Shelby Enterprises, informing me that he had a former employee of Unique Performance that was willing to provide information. This employee was employed by the company for approximately two years as their transport driver and was very recently laid off from Unique Performance due to budgetary restraints and the loss of the Carroll Shelby licensing. This informant states that Douglas Hasty ordered him on October 17th to haul this and two other vehicles to a barn located at a private residence located at 338 Desvoignes Road, Denison, Grayson County Texas. The informant did show this detective where this residence was, to include which barn the vehicles had been located within. The informant also states that he was ordered to remove 17 additional vehicles, which he relocated to an abandoned warehouse located at 811 Betterton Circle, Dallas. He also states that he is personally aware of over 30 additional vehicles that were relocated to 11607 Denton Drive, Dallas. Additionally he states that numerous other vehicles (unknown number) were moved t o a building leased by Unique Performance at 13995 Diplomat Drive Suite # 200, Farmer Branch. The informant state that these moves were done to prevent law enforcement from locating the vehicles for inspection.
On 11/01/2007 search warrants were executed at the Betterton Circle, Senlac Drive, Diplomat Drive and Denton Drive addresses given by the informant and all of the information provided by him proved to be true and valid.
WHEREFORE, Affiant asks for issuance of a warrant that will authorize him to search said suspected place and premises for criminal evidence and seize the same.

Check out where Turner is hanging his hat these days, why doesn’t the media jump on this and get to the bottom of why he was really terminated from the force?
http://spacebrew.com/blog/?page_id=88
http://spacebrew.com/?p=1315
looking great! It’s cool to see someone working on the same beast as I am. The Australian paint stripper is phenomenal. Anything you can buy in California is well, like every other chemical-based product you can buy in California… watered down and worthless, and twice the cost.
it’s cool that you’re tackling all that yourself. I love watching other people work :-)
peace
Let’s see a finished pic of that Mustang. Saw the book, no pics of the car finished. Only a finished look at the car will prove skills.
Who cares where Turner is these days? And by the way, he still works there, just taking some time away from left-wing activists trying to justify why unique performance should get away with millions. Get your facts straight before you make stupid statements. People like you keep journalists happy with uninformed knee-jerk reactions.
As a big fan of Mr. Paul’s, I gotta say that I’m stoked about this entry, and really need to get my hands on the book!! The man truly knows his stuff, and if it’s like Motorbooks’ latest offerings, this should be a treat!
Thanks for pointing my library dollars in the right direction again, Pike!!
Turner wasn’t fired, you idiot. He took a couple months off to rest after his investigation. I saw him 2 weeks ago visiting another Shelby place just down the road from where Unique used to be.
Roller cams are far superior because they increase angle (steepness) the closing and opening ramps that have to be ground into a flat tappet cam to prevent lifter’s from jamming up in the first place. Roller lifters can take a steep ramp because of their wheel design. Once a valve reaches 0.300″ of lift (valve lift, not cam lift) it is less restrictive to air flow. So the intent is to get the valve to max list ASAP so that it can be less restrictive. This increase air flow, which in turn increases power and economy. VVT systems take advantage of what we learned by using roller cams. A roller cam’s duration is measured at the same points as a flat tappet cam. SAE standards start duration measurement at 0.006″ of lift. Whereas racing cams often start the duration measurement at 0.050″ of lift. If you compare the two cams in the picture above they have approximately the same duration. Duration is technically defined as the amount of time the valve is open (just time, not airflow, lift, etc.).
So the roller cam does have a different radius near the top of the lobe, but that is only because of the opening and closing ramps being steeper and taking advantage of the lower friction of the roller lifter.
You lucky SOB. I never have time, or get a chance to check out
all the cool stuff you do.
Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.
Well where have you all gone? I am a lover of the underdog, the believer in the true down and dirty hard workin tryer.
I have raced for years and always I took the hard road, wherer are you now?
They keep showing your original show here in Australia and I just gotta know.
Richard
i agree with r.zaineb. it is the vehicle and not the engine/transmission that makes it the original. one observation, i checked my copy of the september 1971 car craft which has an article on the silver bullet and the engine doees not look like the one in manuels car. it clearly has a crossarm magnesium intake with twin holley carbs and no air filters. also the real silver bullet never had anything other than a coronet super stock hood when on duty on woodward, not the large scoop as on manuels car. but at the end of the day they are both awesome machines so lets just enjoy them while we can.
Thanks to everyone your comments about the Silver Bullet Cars. Keep’m coming!
I agree withu-305 and others… But from my interview with Manuel, he has never claimed to have THE car, only the engine. I sensed he was bitter that Harold, the owner of the other GTX, didn’t have any interest in buying what he believed was the true, original motor. Having that, Manuel would never have made any claims about the authenticity of Harold’s Silver Bullet.

Great to see Ratiki on MRIM! The Day’s are some great folks, and should be yet another fantastic addition to the growing family here!
Say, Cam… howzabout showing off the other toys, too?!
Cool post! Would love to see more hands-on video and tech posts… it’s interesting, as well as informative, and having a well-known and respected shop offering some knowledge is what makes this place so great!

That is a great looking van ! Nice retro mid 70’s look to it with the Monte Carlo quads and the mural. Hope to see it in person one day. Would love to be able to put it on my van related website for all the custom van fanatics to see.
Hey Nigel,
I would say the knee jerk reaction would be accusing a man that is worth $1.5 billion of being involved with a so called chop shop on the word of a truck driver. If you think Turner is just taking some time off I would say that you are the one making a stupid statement.
Slade,
You are the idiot, if he in fact is taking a couple months off he should be back in the saddle next week to make some more false accusations and mess up another case or two.
I know for a fact that Turner got fired.
Doug, Turner did lose his job, but it wasn’t because of this case. He was selling cosmetic products to the guys at work. They did an internal affairs on him and found him in violation of the “double dipping” rules. I hate to burst your bubble, but he dropped the ball in areas other than your case.
Cool cars there…I’d love to have them. They all save gas. Why didn’t we stick with them? You could get Citation with a V6..fast for it’s time. I haven’t seen any of those on the road for quite a while..especially the Le Car. They say Renault killed AMC.
Dear MR. Paul my wife is a teacher and tries to teach the kids in her class about fishes and mammals ,and I admire your work alot . In one of your customizing books I saw how you made a shark ,any technical advice on how to build a not so high tech verison that I could hang up in her classroom to help her kids learn about sharks. She teaches at a title one school meaning she spends alot of our money on the kids in her class on suppliies, lunches, ect. So I would greatly appreciate any technical information on how I could maybe build her a shark. Many Thanks Phil Tamer
I’m in if I can get a bagged ‘89 Nissan that does 4-banger brake stands!
Well i saw a picture of that Mustang and all I can say is… YUCK! What is it? Even in the pic you can see its not smooth and the design is gawdawful. I will pass on learning how to do this to a car.
What Mustang are you talking about? Does the difference in style make you think that he’s not good at metal fab? Maybe he’s following direction from a customer?
It’s his personal car. I saw it in the forum on his website (www.Deadlinetv.com) . Go look at it and tell me it’s not a mess. It’s posted in the Latest From The Shop thread I think. Big Mickey Thompsons pro street tires but not tucked in. Just these humongus 50-gallon barrel-like flares around them. And tubing like back in the 70s. I dont often criticize but dang, I never seen anything like this. And he claims to be a master customizer.
I love seein Trosley’s Cartoons! But I have to admit, some of my favorite Trosley work was the non-automotive cartoons he did for a popular men’s magazine. Good write up!
Mr. Trosley was a HUGE inspiration to me as a kid (…and as an adult kid, too!), namely his “How To Draw” series in CARtoons! Man… how many of us doing this today can all look back on those? Probably all of us!
Truly a multi-talented artist, humorist and inspirational human being!
Great post…. thanks for highlighting one of my heroes!
all of you idiots need to check your obits. turner died in a motorcycle crash over two weeks ago.
Show us the “Down Under” cars we don’t have!
I have a friend who works for Carrollton and knew Turner. He said Turner died in late July. He said it was a car crash, not a motorcycle crash.
George was and is an awesome cartoonist. I remember his work as if it was yesterday….that’s a good thing because there are a lot of things I have chosen to forget! Thanks for featuring his work!!
The funny car was raced mostly as a bracket car in Las Vegas by Garry Green. I raced him a lot, as I had an altered. He was an engine builder, mechanic, and quite a character. Garry passed away some time back, and when I saw the car at the Roadster Show, it sure brought back a lot of memories. Last night while I was cleaning up my garage here in New Mexico, I found several articles from (1982) the Las Vegas Review-Journal about Garry, myself, and the other local racers. And now, here in rural NM, I’ve gotten to know Red Greth (Speed Sport Roadster fame) real well. Small world, huh?
Can we add a 62 valiant that doesn’t go in reverse (find those hills and park on them!) and a 75 Vega that says “okay, it’s either up the hill or the air conditioning – pick one’!
I Love CARtoons, and I wish I still had mine especially the ones with the Iron on’s .
What an awesome write up…….I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy……=]
[...] What I learned: Bodywork 101 continued.. [...]
American auto makers have had plenty of time to fix their market. We can go back to the first gas crunch when the Japanese auto makers started to make their mark on American soil. How did we respond, we came out with the pinto, the vega, the monza, the luv, the pacer to name a few. And we all know that reputation, plus a-lot of them smaller American autos still had a Japanese motor in them. Whats that say to the American people? In 1996 GM came out with the first production electric vehicle EV1 and they did nothing with it and revolted back to the “Big American Dreams” the bigger the better and that stuck up till this last year. Now we get hit with another gas crunch and American auto makers are forced to close down most of their Big SUV and Truck factories killing American moral and dreams.
Awesome blog Brian…..sheds two tears because Gretzky got sent to the Red Wings giving the bragging rights and momentum for years to come.
Dear George,
The comic book, CARToons sparked my memory, Did you know Jerry Barnett? He did several strips for different car & motorcycle publications CARToons being one. I went to school with Jerry & he used to draw advertisements for my mother’s hobby shop back in the 50’s. I still have some of heis early drawings.
Leo Metz
flat6 runs around whining about all the stuff I build… what has he built or is he only a whiner????? I guess he thinks I should build things the way he likes, what a looser.
Is it my imagination or is there no mention of that Olds version of the corvette? That’s the coolest pic in the article!
Harrr…here’s the pot calling the kettle black. Look who’s whining.
I thought I would reply to your message on my wagon. Thanks for the nice comments on my car..I have done a little more since that video/photo. I made a custom dash to match the original but a little bigger to except 6 real gauges and I also installed custom made stainless export brace and monte carlo bar along with a few other mods.. it’s a work in progress. always doing something to it when I’m not working on my other car a 1951 Ford Victoria street rod..
Props to you for taking on this project. Your account of how you went about the tailgate fix is good reading. A guy can learn from it. Thanks for the post!
Yea, another funny thing is KIA trying to build this at this juncture in time:
http://www.kia.com/borrego/
Not all that shocking, really. Are you aware that Kia’s chief designer is Tom Kearns, who was, until recently with GM (most notably Cadillac) ? He’s the same guy who oversaw the CTS, and also acted as GM’s “Chief Designer of Brand Character”.
So, in all honesty, knowing that pretty much takes away any feeling of shock in my book, anyway.
…and on the Olds concept, it was simply placed as a way to illustrate their lost forward-thinking approach. The car is the 1954 F-88 concept car, and has some great history as not only a GM Motorama car, but also as having sold for a (then) record $3M in 2005 at Barrett-Jackson. The article wasn’t about the car, and adding info like that to the article would have side-tracked the message. To me, the coolest pic is actually the last Alero leaving the line… It’s ironic that this was considered the “last”, when you could still walk into a Buick dealership and purchase the car today… re-badged and re-bodied, of course…. And THAT sums up the meat of the story in one shot!
Thanks for looking in, and for the comments!

too bad you didnt put that much time and care in to the car you traded for that wagon! say what you will about the body work and the primer, but at least that car got me everywhere i needed to go, which is more than i can say about the p.o.s you traded for it! WORST TRADE EVER!!!!! AND I WILL REGRET IT FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE!!!! quarter panels full of bondo! a motor that nearly fell apart after a few hundred miles! and a tranny that no longer shifts correctly WORST TRADE EVER!!!!!! but lesson learned i guess.
Grimm is the previous owner of this Falcon. He’s commenting on the, “another big pile of manure the previous owner didn’t mention” I put in this blog. I’m shocked by this response. I think he should have been thanking me!
That’s right! I only commented on his workmanship, not his character. Had I attacked his character, I would have mentioned how in addition to the car, he also agreed to do about $1000 worth of body work. He flat-out FLAKED on that cause he’s bitter over the condition of the Fairlane. I know I told him everything I knew about the Fairlane and he even admitted that to me. I know that’s not true for him. Case in point: the MESS he left when cutting out the cowl vent. There was never any mention of that. Talk about filled with bondo! He’s the one claiming to be a body man and he’s angry with me cause he didn’t notice the condition of the Fairlane’s quarter panels? Does that make any sense at all?
The lesson for everyone to learn is: Never hand over the title until the deal is done.
Very nice article! Always interested in learning new photo and video techniques. More!
Now that’s what i’m talking about!
What a great group of cars. I live in chandler and have 32 roadster when and where do you guys meet up?
Hi Darren,
It’ll be great to have you.
7 AM, Sunday at the Starbucks on Arizona Ave and just south of Chandler Blvd. in old downtown Chandler. Having breakfast with the wives is only once per month.
Please join MyRideisMe.com and TELL A FRIEND!
…and another deminsion was added to our world. Very nice.
Kim Falcon is not only beautiful she is genuinely NICE!!!!!
Lookin’ good Kim, love the “Bad Ass” side of you. Keep it up.
Nice job on that Pike.
I think Faith would be happy.
Hey Devin,
She is happy, she proof read it for me!
It’s gonna be a great hot rod movie…
OH Lord…….I’m looking forward to every Sunday!!!
Thanks for the pictures and covering the car cruise. My car is in the picture with or left of the bright blue 66 Impala. Mine is a Pro Street Bright Blue 1975 Camaro with the hood and trunk open…………Gary
Looks nice. Love the gas door, what is that from?
To sib. I would grab a wagon at $1000. Can’t find anything decent here in Ontario Canada under $4000.
I am going to see a nice 62 on the weekend, 3 owner low milage.
Doug
Hi Doug,
The fuel door is the original skin of the car, I believe, with the hinge welded back on. It doesn’t fit very well so it’ll need some work to be finished.
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble finding a decent car. There was a 64 or 65 2 door wagon for sale here in town for $1500. They come up every now and then, but getting it to Ontario would be tough. Take care!
See you all in old down town chandler at starbucks sunday 7-7:30ish, Doug
NIce. I grew up in Detroit’s NW corner, turning 16 in 1970.
Telegraph was closer, so it was easier to catch action there, usually without even trying. Always a treat to head to the Eastside to go woodwarding though.
I’ll be watching for more stories on our past :)
I was right there when this pic was taken a few years ago at Mooneyes.
Good stuff.
Would you be having a pinup contest at billetproof or would you be needing my help hosting.
I’m Paul’s Dad, I have always been proud of Paul, When he was working for and with my friends and co-workers, he never let me down.
Go Paul. Love Dad
[...] for October, I’ll try to post at the beginning of the month? I think maybe I was enjoying Pinup Kim Falcon too much from September? What do you [...]
Sounds like it was a nice cool getaway.
Some other friends of mine went, too, & said they had a great time.
I’ll have to try to make it next year.
Thanks for sharing, Amber.
“So, the Soviet army covertly acquired 5 BMW R71 motorcycles in Sweden and took them back to Moscow for reverse engineering.” – this is an urban legend. The russians get the plans from the germans directly, due to the “Hitler-Stalin-Pact”. They gave the russians the technology as “gift”, because the germans had already invented new motorcycles: the BMW R75 and the ZÜNDAPP. The russians did not any reverse engeneering.
Just as a remark. :-)
Greetings from germany,
Marc
Damn I soo wanted to go to this one, at-least someone did…cool shotz!!
I’d like to go to this show, too.
It’s the same time we go to the car show
at the Orange County fairgrounds.
Maybe next year…..

mr. f~
a very in depth, cool read…nice of you to share..since it isn’t often that we are able to sit down and show some of these folks what it takes to put a piece together..sometimes my head foams for days after a piece is “born”..sometimes it foams for days while i am developing one as well…this latest from you shows incredible raw speed, hope you nail it down so it doesn’t zoom out of your studio, looks like it wants to!
cheers from vermont
s. @ 669
Does it get any better then Tom Fritz??! (only when he opens the studio and gives you a peek behind the scenes!!)
Having seen the man’s work in person, I can say that it’s incredible, almost transcendent. His ability to portray a moment is unmatched, and the technical skill he possesses are almost inhuman.
Great entry, and a rare look into the eye of genius! Too cool….
amazing and informative! you are truly a master. i love how you described the process not the procedure.
peace
Amazing work. Wow!
I’ve never had an appreciation for art…until now. Wow! After reading your story, I sit here at my computer amazed at your handiwork. Your art is stunning, to say the least. I didn’t know so much forethought went into such a creation. Excellent work.
Yes,I like that life style if i only had family there i wuold move out there and would surely buy an old car and the same i always loved old cars with that style, keep up the good work and please try to make some videos of the cars and sounds of there engines, please ….Good luck.
I feel so upset that they don:t have show like these in N.Y.C. cause i sure would love to see rat rods or just to hear that sound of the engine roaring. wow if i had the money to make one i would start something like this in the city, keep up the good work i love this site..
This car is nice it has my attention.
I wish i would have been born in the 50 it is cool.
This car is osome i love it it runs in my blood i was born for this live style.

This is the first time I can recall actually “feeling” the power in an oil. What a great piece of work! Keep feeding us this wonderful craftwork of yours!
Art writers will tell you that there’s a quiet richness in pursuing one’s personal vision within the walls of their studio. True. But in small rooms like my dungeon, sound is contained and suppressed, the floor is always cold, and it can get dreadfully lonesome…
It’s the kind comments and words of support from friends like you that push me to stay positively creative, and truly are one of the greatest rewards I can receive.
It does make a difference. Thank you.
Tom Fritz
Hey Tom,
True artists, I’m talking the real thing, are creative on more than one front. You’ve shown it again here in this article. Your mind has a way of painting pictures for other people and you not only have the ability to share that visually but in writing as well.
Nice read. You really should pen a story.
very cool….I dig the black 1960 Starliner and the Party bus…..=]
That is GREAT!
I can just smell the NITRO!
Very inspirational.
Hey Pike
I’ve been runnin’ the Pertronix on my truck,
& now on the Pink Ford. They work like a champ,
and very dependable……so far.
=]
I recommend them, too, for anyone dealing with
the old points systems.
I have one on the econoline. Like it…but it took me two to find one that worked. The pertronix boys sent me another one. I have noticed the motor running better with the pertronix unit.
Pike thats the cleansest part on your car!
long time fan of Dayna, gorgeous as they come. Actually sportin one of her shirts right now. So i don’t think it’s a coincidence she’s pictured near a “woody” …lol. sorry had to.
BEAUTIFUL!!!! Love the Cherry earrings.
Truly amazing work, I would have bet money that these were photographs!
In a world of computer graphics, ( yes!, including my own !!) good to see some talent outside of the box , the computer box :-)..
Love the Mercury grill treatment!
Dayna is a Doll !!!
I’ve seen her, live, in person, at one of the local
car show/ Rockabilly events, here.
She’s even more beautiful in real life.
A real “wowzer”!
Very cool artwork…..even without the 3D glasses!
Wow!! This is just incredible, over-the-top detail madness! I’ve spent probably more time than would be deemed “normal” just studying the stuff on your site… Just unbelievable! Tremendous talent, great skill, and obviously one of the rare people who just seems to “get it”. Truly awesome!!!
It sucks!! It made me sea-sick…..I threw up…..I can’t stop looking at it you bastard!!
HAHHAHAHAAaaaaa
Thanks very much for the comments guys! Only just got back online after a computer problem so I’ll be sure to check out both your sites properly!!…
Is this from the MESA GAY PRIDE PARADE?
HAhahahahaaaa
KIDDING, KIDDING!
Purely jealousy and envy I assure you.

Oh, that Econo is SUPER BAD.
The roadster’s are OK too.
There I go again…..
way to push the envelope Brian…….=]
What’s happening with this show? Is it back up and running?
That is an amazing talent. Excellent artwork.
They truly do look like photographs.
WOW!
I guess I’ll add my two cents worth here. From what I can see Eric is completely correct in his explanation of the differences and benefits of flat tappet vs. roller except for one very crucial fact. Since the EPA has now mandated the removal of zinc and phosphorous from most passenger car and truck motor oils, there is one more comparison that needs to be addressed. Will a flat tappet cam even survive the break-in period let alone it’s intended use be that street or racing use? Even the major cam companies will tell you that it is nearly impossible to make a flat tappet cam survive the break-in period, even using all the correct additives and procedures. Due to this fact alone the roller cam wins hands down! If it was as simple as just taking the failed cam and lifters out and replacing them (and attempting another break-in) that might not be too bad, but it gets much more expensive than that. All that metal has now been pumped through the entire engine destroying the oil pump, bearings, and sometimes even the crank and piston skirts. So now that “few extra hundred dollars” isn’t looking so bad is it? I will no longer build an engine in my shop using a flat tappet cam unless the customer signs a waiver stating he realizes the risk of doing so.

Yeah, Jimmy’s great at what he does!
I like concept B. And love the dash panel idea!
I’m anxious to see it finished, good luck with it all!
Interior number B all the way. I like the bench seat and horizontal shapes. It suits the long and low shape of your car best.
Plus, i don’t know that i can even imagine your car with real bucket seats and seat belts!
Interior concept B
INTERIOR B is my vote. The belled holes look has the “bomber” – aircraft look about it. I’ve seen it used more and more on rods lately and really has that retro look about it.
Hey Craig, looks terrific! Personally, I like B but with some seat ideas from A. I’d wrap the aluminum around each seat back to give it a sportier look, but keeping the bench bottom. The aluminum would just define the individual seat backs, not stick out into your wife’s back or anything if she wanted to cuddle. Also, are you thinking of any door panel storage options for things like… ummm…. nevermind, nobody uses maps or paper any more.
Later!
dw
I LIKE B & C BUT I THINK B WOULD FIT THE THEEM OF THE CAR BETTER . DON
That IS a tough choice!! Those are all really cool. From my first impression, I give a slight nod to concept B as is.
vote: B
Wow… A lot of Euro-inspired design…. How do you say “they all suck” in French?
Seriously, though, Jimmy is THE MAN!! I’m digging on all of ‘em, and the wheel treatment really got me, and makes the car, Pike! You almost HAVE TO now!
I truly dig the side panels in “B” (as well as the bomber-inspired bench), and think it’d work equally well with seat style “C”…. especially the killer solid bottom with the narrow bucket top… great way to combine the sporty feel with such a small cabin.
Love the hood straps (and matching tank straps!), and that the hood and tank both have the polished metal finish going on… Jimmy knows traditional style, and this thing is oozing it all over the place.
Jim…. Just keep trying to un-cross your eyes and you’ll see it…. hahahahaha….. or not. Whatever.
Paul, thanks, man!! I gotta do a pin-up like this next….
Before reading the boys choices above, my vote was for “B”. It is very ,very cool. I think with “A”, you would burn the *@^% out of your leg with this hot AZ sun!
lol
Congrats with all the new members, I am sure with GG’s around the corner, you will pull in a lot more!
BBBBBB
I’m with Melissa, definately B….. that’s a great look and fits Bonnie well! Can’t wait to see it done!
Pike,, opinions, opinions, opinions everbody has one or two,,
I would like to kinda mix and match a little,,
I like the door panel treatment of “C” but the seat design of “B”
That is going to be a kool rod when finished [ oops,, are they ever really finished??]
Interior concept B
I like “B” the best.
This was that hardest thing I had to do also Pike. Take your time, wait, 7 years, gesh man get’er done. LOL.
Dave (57 Yellow&white 150 Chevy)
Well, amigo…..
I think you’ve got your answer!
Looks like an overwhelming vote for “B”.
Concept B. It looks like it was designed for the car, not seats from another car stuck in.
The turned aluminum door panels look cold. An interior should give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.
If you’d like to see the full batch of photos I took at this show…

concept a seats, with concept b panels
Hey Pike, nice ride. I would definitly go with concept B. And I like the dash setup too
I like the seats for concept A but favor the door treatment for style B.
Good Luck Bonnie is looking GOOD !!
I liked B also. I chose it before I looked at some of the other votes.
Looking forward to the finished product.
I like “B” doors with “C” seats, or all “B”
I say b all the way I say do the dash insert in about 3 different styles of wood would look real classy if done right. I’m up for hire on the insert check my woodie out under woodbutcher on this site. good luck Jeff
I would have to say ‘B’ but I really like the engine turned stuff in ‘A’ which has a clean, simple overall look to it.
Oh and Jimmy is insane! So much style oozing out of that stuff…
Wow. takes me back to the days in high school when all I did was pencil drawings. This guy has the eye! Astonishing pieces!
I like the door panels in drawing B with the seats from C. The dash setup is very cool also.
Hey Craig, if you’re done with the condensor can I have it back. :)
Hey ELpolacko, yea, you can have it back! I’m holding it in an environmentally controlled chamber to protect it’s distinct patina… You’ll be at Goodguy’s, right?
Looks like you have plenty of responses…but here’s my 2 cents anyway.
I like the panels and seat designs in option “A.”
Altho, the seat design in option “B” has possibilities.
–> The bench seat design may be more functional for what looks like a small interior space.

Gees. I can’t tell you what that does for me.
Can’t go wrong with Concept B. Distressed leather is hot. Distressed anything is good. You know I am a drama queen.
What a NERD!!
You failed to mention the inverse relationship of the Flux Capacitor to the Kuneutson Valve lash can increase the airflow to the muffler bearing thus affecting the total brake specific efficiency at the engine’s resonance frequency.
I’m bummed I didn’t make it to this little get-together.
Cool pics Swanee.
Steve, I love your AWB cars. It’s great to see the golden years of drag racing come alive again! . I am currently building an AWB ‘65 Chevy II for nostalgic drag racing and some fun on the street! I mini tibbed it and I just built my front clip but had to put the car on hold. My wife is having back surgery in november, and we have 3 kids. Wish me luck! I am going to e-mail some photos soon to Hot Rod DeLuxe. I have a period correct 331 already done, ready to drop in. OR, should I rebuild my 454???

I select interior B. Final Answer.
Jimmy is the king of kings.
11/12/08 – There’s still plenty left.
Did I say, “Rat Rod” too much? I only said it twice and once was in reference to my own car!
The Motoczysz project is a true inspiration to all motocyclists with a passion for excellence. They went outside the mainstream motorcycle industry and proved that all ideas can be achieved. Originality was not compromised. Well done.

The real SILVER BULLET…
Fascinated by the this glimmering and nasty looking 67 GTX at the Detroit Autorama in 2002 with an audacious claim of invincibility on a sign next to it, I tracked it down to it’s excellent home in Harold Sullivan;s stable of mighty Mopars. I speculated to Harold that any car that had never been beaten must have a hell of a story behind it. He affirmed that to indeed to be the case and supplied me with a list of names and sources to confirm the claim.
After five years of intensive interviews, including several with Jimmy Addison, Ted Spehar, Darris Ball, Tom Hoover and Paul Schram, I can heartily confirm the fact that Harold Sullivan’s version is the real deal.
As for Manuel…
Jimmy Addison’s last comment on the subject was simply this:
“He doesn’t have what he thinks he has.”
End of story.

This is a rolling piece of fine art…….=]
Now THAT is what I call original! Jeff is obviously full of vision and talent. Awesome car!
Surely that makes you want to take a run at the salt this year Pike!… If not, come out with us and the motorcycles the next week.
Hey man, if you run your bike, that second pic’s got good advice for you! I gotta make it next year!
That is one of the bitchiness builds I’ve seen. Very original and well executed.
I saw this car back in the day when it was brought to Toledo, Oh to race my friend’s (Trigger Smith’s)) big-block Camaro. Addison showed up (with several other trailerd Detroit cars in tow) in an immacualate shortbed Dodge pickup pulling a new black Bock Dragstar trailer…..alll on Cragar S/S wheels. The cops broke up the race before it could happen. I talked to Addison about this at Carlisle in 1997 and he remembered it well. Harold Sullivan has the genuine Bullet. Manuel has one of the (maybe the last ) real engines…..possibly the engine I saw in the car in Toledo. The car in Toledo had the newly added dual Holley 4500’s with the IR (individual runner) intake and the John Bauman boundary layer bleedoff hoodscoop. It also had the front Cragar Super Tricks……all the same week that Sox and Martin got them.
If you didn’t get rid of your other set of wheels & tires, you can always switch back and forth between the two, depending on yer mood.
I like it both ways.
oh-yeah that yellow had to go…love the wire rims though…….=]
Number 2 is my favorite. I’ve always been a sucker for white walls. I’m glad I never saw it with the red header. That rendition of Bonnie is the BOMB.
duuude i like the big rollers, and the rake

SATURDAY CRUISIN’ ON MAIN STREET IN MESA – JAN 24TH Kick-Off Cruise Recap
Well, yesterday evening’s Kick-Off Cruise on Main Street in Mesa was by all standards considered a great success !!!
There was an incredible variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles that were brought out by many folks. And to each and everyone of you that showed up — a huge THANK YOU is in order. Again, as we have emphasized, without you and your vehicles, we would not have a cruise. And to those of you that showed up with only a lawn chair in hand — THANK YOU as well. Sidewalk spectators are always welcomed and encourage.
As you know, we will be doing this the 4th Saturday of every month. The next Saturday Cruisin’ on Main Street will be FEB 28TH. This cruise will be held in conjunction with the “HOME RUNS, HOT DOGS & HOT RODS CAR SHOW”. Car Show starts at 11:00AM that morning, at the large lot between the City Plaza building, and the Jack-in-the-Box. More info available at the website link below.
In addition – pics of just a few of the cars that showed up for the Cruise are posted at our website
http://www.hotrodplanet.com
This car was originally a GM SEMA show car, that was showed in 1991. The car started life possibly as a 1LE Race Package car (with A/C Delete) According to the GM service parts ID tag, It has the 1LE control arms, driveshaft, sway bars, rear end and LSD, as well as the Corvette brakes with aluminum calipers. The car then of course has the ZR1 engine that was developed by GM with the Help of lotus. The DOHC power plant was rated in its first years at 375 hp, and later 405hp. This is the only non-corvette car to every leave GM with the ZR1 Engine to my knowledge. The car currently has around 7k miles on it, and I believe the engine only has Dyno miles. More pics at http://www.myrideisme.com/garage/paulgt2164.
This car is a neat car. I decoded the GM service parts ID tag, and it appears to have started life as a 1LE car. The car has the Heavy duty rear end, with limited slip, as well as the aluminum driveshaft. The car also sports the 1LE options of special control arms, sway bars, springs, larger bumpstops, and corvette brakes with aluminum calipers on all four corners. The car is a A/C delete car, and has the 1LE cluster and tach.
The of course the car has the DOHC engine that was co-developed with lotus, and the matching ZF 6 speed transmission. As far as I know, this is the only Non Corvette to have the ZR1 engine installed by GM. The car has a little over 7k miles on it, and the engine appears to only have Dyno time/miles. The custom wheels were made by Ronal. The car was also featured in GM performance magazine several years ago.
More pics can be seen at http://www.myrideisme.com/garage/paulgt2164.

Those things are cool looking Pike!
Interesting story. They’d make a cool shift knob, but you probably
wouldn’t want to use them for that. Is that a $350 price tag?
Von Hot Rod’s a cool guy, too. I’ve met him & chatted a couple of times.
I usually see him at the OCCA cruise in Cali.

Pike– very cool story, and thanks for filling me in on -part of the GNRS that I missed! (networking was fun, don’t get me wrong!) The pinstriper’s get-together and auction is always cool, and it’s impressive to see such a gathering of car culture (kustom kulture at it’s finest) names in one place.
Between the great personalities and all of the custom paint (and ‘flaked, pearlescent and candy coated goodies) and artistic eye candy, it’s like a show within the show!
Thanks for the culture lesson, as well as the great pics!
Truly, the 60th Grand National Roadster Show was one of the all-time greats!
what about that rolls royce pro street with hemi?
Tod,
That Rolls was bad-ass and the guys supporting it (builders or owners, I’m not sure) were very friendly to the MyRideisMe.com staff. We shot a couple pictures of it, but since it’s been all over the web world since SEMA, we didn’t post much about it yet. Know what I mean?
yeah I would have to say “THAT WAS AWESOME”……..=]
Of course it’s cool! Of course it would seem uncool, the 80s are over. I bet you still think the ZZ Top roadster is cool because it is. The car is a piece of history and not a POS, haha. Too bad it’s gotta sit around….wouldn’t it be cool to drive it on a Hot Rod Magazine Road trip?

What can I say Tom…you continue to amaze and inspire me. And, as all of us paint slingers know..aint no substitute for hard work at the easel.
Keep on movin man!!!
Tom, obviously you really know hot rods. Even in your loose style that expresses speed and action the detail is there without being over worked. You know the curve of a dropped axel, how the springs and shocks are mounted, what a 21 stud engine and 97’s look like and bias ply tires.
The only artist that comes close to you was Walter Gotschke. Remember him?
Thats the best compliment I can give.
I hope to acquire one of your prints someday to hang next to the Gotschke
Auto Union C-Type in action.
Thanks for doing what you do.
This car fetched the big bucks because it was a Boyd car and there is no way you could build a all steel body 32 ford of this calibur for 200k.How do I know this? Because I am the guy that got this car ready to go out to Scottsdale, I did a complete detail from top to bottom on this car and it was professionaly built with no expenses spared. With lots of photos of Boyd with car it was a great buy for someone who was a Boyd Coddington fan.
tom you are a great artist in the hotrod world.
Thanks for your comment Scott. I should probably say that I agree… $200k was no where near the build cost for this car, especially given Scott’s inspection/comment. With the cost of one-off billet pieces and custom paint, $200k won’t get you very far with the top builders.
FAntaztic!
This is a side of you we never knew. Such content, such expression, GREAT JOB
I’ll be listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I get it now. Does Paula know about this? The truck looks great. So does the rest of the shot.
Great writeup, Pike!
I spent the weekend 2 chairs to the left of Nash and Ghost. Truly amazing how common interests cross even the language barrier.
I’ll look you up on MySpace.
Take care Bro!

Really amazing to see you work. Such attention to Detail
Keep up the Great work and inspiration. You can’t put a price on that
SWEET !!!
I’m gonna have to get me one of those!!!
I found the Jan 24 night by accident. It brought back many memories of crusing main in the 70’s. Fantastic event. Thanks to anyone that made it happen. Im going on the 28 th of Feb.
A great job, both in design & build. You look at what won the AMBR and say “Why”? I was there, saw them both and think the judges got their score cards mixed up.
I totally agree with Len on this one…..=]
Hi Tom! -and thanks a lot for this journey.
You are a damned great artist!
From everything I’ve seen and heard about this movie, it’s going to be an instant Hot Rod Cult Classic for sure. I too have made donations to this amazing effort. From what I read I know they could use our financial support to make it happen, especially with virtually no budget. Faith Granger and her filmmaking Team should receive a standing ovation for all the hard work and dedication they have put into creating this amazing film. I am very anxious to see and hear the completed movie. I’m certain it will ROCK!! Here is the movie’s website I visit almost daily http://www.deuceofspadesmovie.com to get the latest info on the progress.
I have other books on this subject and I still found it very practical and informative. Articles on shrinking panels are very good.

Just for future reference; I’m a huge NHRA fan and and John Force is the king!!!
I had the pleasure of announcing both of those cars cars many times during my tenure at the now defunct Vaca Valley Raceway.
Bob Pike as I recalled worked for a Ford Agency in Albany (Jim Woulff Ford) and had a passion for anything that was Ford powered.
I recall after Bob and Wanda Pike went there separate ways and Harry (Brad) Bradley purchased the car was the photo the was taken at Fremont (Baylands) that had all 4 wheels off of the ground shortly after Brad let the clutch out.
So many good memories of both the Galaxie and of course the never forgotten “lime Rickey”

Looks like a lot of fun for the kids, I’d love to get my 9yr old Grandson involved. How do we learn of the next event?
Hi James,
I’ll make sure to post about the next Diecast Drags in advance. Where do you hang out? I’d like to take the track up to Scottsdale Pavilions…
I Agree. Our Muscle Car must have Insurance, then we can go with 200++ Mph.. Whoossss
Rob,
Could you tell me what you know about the race between Jimmy Addison in the Silver Bullet and Frankie Ulbrick in the Black Bird. I have heard one story from Rick Dyer, from CARS. Inc. That the Frankie leaped out in the lead and every time Frankie shifted he pulled a liitle more on Jimmy. Frankie felt that Jimmy caught him at the high end a few feet before the finish line. Rick claims Jimmy “lenghtened” the finish line. Where you there?
Thank you in advance
Eric
Dr. Schiffer,
I wasn’t there. I was referring to a mopar magazine article written several years ago. I wish I could have been in attendance.
I once emailed Jim Wangers regarding a race he had had against the Silver Bullet. He seemed elusive in that he neither confirmed nor denied the outcome of the race. I can only leave it to you to draw any potential conclusions from that communication. ;)
I couldn’t find my way bach here to figure out where I posted this question. We’re out in the East Mesa area so the K-mart site is very close for us.
That thing is bitchin’!!!
I want it !!!!
so beautiful! would love to see more of the car tho!
Awesome! I’m a big AMC fan! I hope you do the project for real! Really glad you want to stay with the 360..even stock that motor in that car kicked butt!
PS – Karma is a bitch…Chrysler plowed AMc’s factory and well you know what’s going on with Chrysler now!
I got a copy and absolutely LOVE it. Great art, great packaging and a good read too! Fantastic stuff there!!!
Only an engineer could make this happen, and I am counting on you to get sparkin and show us how we can contribute…
The only thing I have issue with, is that the car sits too high….
I really actuallly considered this. Had a prius and everything. #1 problem, the struts are too tall and would stick above the fenders. #2 problem…electronics…
went with an aussie late model 6 instead.
someone will do this soon i’m sure…
peace
Kai,
this won’t be a problem for me because I’m removing most of the front suspension. To make it ride nice, I’ll probably run about 10-12psi in the front tires.
The electronics won’t be a problem either. Painless has a wiring kit for a 2006-07 Prius to 1960-63 Ford Falcon. No worries!
Yes, please!
April fools?
Wow! What an idea! I have a 5000VA UPS I’m retiring. It would make a great battery system for your project. The batteries in it are only 3 months old. Just pay for shipping and it’s yours, Craig.
As far as the front end goes, I’ll bet a Corvair transaxle would work like a champ!
Hey Dan, I’ll get in touch with you, thanks! I’m not sure the 5000VA’s gonna work though. I have a friend Marty who’s got a doctor or scientist friend that says we can generate 1.21 Gigawatts! I’m expecting 0-60 times in the low 3 second range on a full charge. Might be able to dip into the 2’s with A/C off. I’ll check into the Corvair transaxle. The hybrid system already has a CVT trans adapted, but with the Corvair unit, I could probably get like 3 extra reverse gears.
Looks like too much fun…I wanna play!
hey its the striper..stroke hit me up my cell 626-(edit) many thanx paulie thanx for the comment
Man…… where’s my waders?!?!
The poo is gettin’ deep!!!
I truely enjoyed the story of Jimmy Addison and the legendary Silver Bullet. Allthough I was too young to drive when I read the stories of Addison during the late 60’s or early 70’s he was my hero. At the time I read all of the performance mags-Hot Rod, Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding etc. and dreamed of a day when I would have a Mopar muscle car of my own. Eventually I owned a 1969 Plymouth GTX that was my favorite of all the cars I have owned during my life. This evening I noticed tthat on my tv was qualifying for a NHRA racing event in Las Vegas. It has been a very long time since I attended a race or watched it on tv but this all brought back memories of an earlier time and a younger me. I sat at my computer, typed in Jimmy Addison and with a click of the mouse I came to your story. Through the years I wondered about the car and Mr Addison. Thank you for the story and a chance if only for a moment, to bring back wonderfull memories.

Thanks for the comment! I think we’ll have to wait a while longer on “Deuce of Spades”. I’ll keep my ears open and announce as soon as I know when the movie’s available.
You end up at the Safeway? Right on, but every third Saturday of each month if continue on up Lake Pleasant Parkway a couple more miles is a Wal-mart that also is happy to have everyone and their cars hang out. Those particular nights we are the hang out for the Sun Country Corvettes. Anyhow, I am just trying to get word out that we are there and any and all are welcome. The Wal-mart is located at the corner of Lake Pleasant parkway and Deer Valley roads. 99th avenue actually goes straight into the parking lot of the store and currently the cars hang out in the northwest corner of the parking lot. If you have any questions call 623-537-0809 and ask for Paula in automotive. Thought I would offer this up if you maybe feel like a change in scenery or something. Thanks
i totally agree… its about the cars, the women and the cars. some beer and music is a added pleasure.

Being there before, it was a little strange not being at the Gold Coast. But, having said that I thought that the Orleans did a great job maintaining the huge sea of people. I for myself had a blast! Great music, Great rods and real good times( sorry we couldn’t hook up man) Met alot of cool people and had my fair share beverages. All in all I thought it was put together well and everyone was sane …for the most part. Hope to see all of you next year! – HC
I wish I could go to a show and see cars like that! Man I love that rod at the top with the wheel as big as the car!
oh yeah!! cold beers and good times!!!
Got my set of Pinstripe photos loaded up in the pinstripe picture gallery!
I’ve been going since it started, Built a 51 Merc… took off to Viva Las Vegas from Montana no. central area and went to roof top of parking garage Friday nite and it was wild parting flame throwing burn outs it was crazy but cool! loved it sat morning went to roof top of Gold Coast the organizers check your car out had to be old school home built or they would not let on the roof, sorry… and that was cool my ride went through I’ve been going ever since old lady and i now with grand kids they love it
Lot of language, too bad that had to be included. I would have to watch with TV Guardian dont mind the craps and dangs once in awhile but the GD’s there is no need for that! Love Hot Rodding and the reason but that talk don’t enhance nothing for me! But I’m just one guy!
55 Mike
Another good reason John Force is King…….=]
Hey Mike, Thanks for your comment. I disagree.
Every part of this movie is true to the time. If that’s the way people (especially the characters in this movie) spoke back then, which it’s my guess they did, then changing that would not be good for the movie.
I agree Pike, it’s much better than when purchased originally. I like steps 2 and 3. I love me some red steelies too and white walls ftw! My ‘50 Ford F-1 (plastic model) is black with red steelies (no chrome hubcaps here) with white walls and a big drop in ride height. :) I’m a huge fan of door logo’s too, so the myrideisme is perfect. What’s next? It’s no fun unless its a project right? LOL
My car may never be done, unless it’s someone else’s! I like the no hubcap look too, but I always end up with aftermarket dual pattern wheels and I don’t like no-hubcap if you can see a set of extra holes… that’s just me.
On deck is to get my front end vibration taken care of and then dial in the steering some and then pull it all apart for final paint. That probably won’t happen until my Falcon Wagon project is done though… who knows when that’ll be!
DOH!!!!!
Chris-
I was there too when the car show was just a small gathering of super cool cars on the rooftop of the Gold Coast parking garage – I remember those flame throwin’ days!
Although I’ve been going for years, this was my first with my own car – a 1955 Studebaker. So much fun having her in the show and makin lots of new friends! I thought the Orleans did a good job in organizing…I’ll be back next year of course!

So, my pappy just emailed me after reading this post. He said he’s seen a Conley V8 run before. He said I was in a stroller and it was at a model show in Long Beach. He said it revved like crazy! That’s cool! I’ve actually seen one run when I was a wee little rodder. :)
Right on Grease girl! I won’t fault you too much for stealing a sweet ride from my home state of Utah (ok, I grew up in socal, but now live in Ute). Cool post! All very cool rods. I really like the light blue truck!
That scrapin’ early 60’s Ford truck is my favorite. Love red wheels with white walls. Got any more pics of that thing!? Love it!
hello everyone!
A few answers to your questions:
Looks like release will not take place before the fall of 2009… It remains very hard to predict, because good cinematography cannot be rushed. So let’s all keep our fingers crossed!
Careful attention was paid to the authenticity of the dialogues, including the slangs used as well as the swears. My initial script had no swears at all but when I ran it by my old timers, they all said that guys did swear back then, quite a bit for some, although never in front of the ladies. They helped me rework the dialogues to make them more “real” and period correct. Some of the situations, depicting conflicts, or tension, called for swears. But there are many scenes that have no foul language, so it is not as bad as you think. The teasers ended up with quite a few swear words. I know some people are offended by the GDI, I personally am not and I am a Christian myself. I believe the realistic hard core language used by some of the characters contributes to add an element of true gritt, which I can sink my teeth into. I like that. This is, afterall, not a Disney film. :)
Last of the Hiboy Girls was a home made documentary, shot from the hip with a $200 camera and done solely for my roadster display at the 75th anniversary of the Deuce Grand National Roadster Show. It was that documentary that inspired me to make a feature film. It is not available for sale.
If anyone else has questions fire away, I will be glad to answer them.
Now back to work! I got a film to finish LOL. :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to ask about our story. Racing is truly a labor of love, but when we can also promote a good cause, we appreciate any positive press.
We are currently down again due to timing chain failure, but are working on reengineering to strengthen this weak link. We’ll keep everyone posted.
Thanks for the support.

Never heard of a six cylinder turning those kinds of times, but I have discovered in my 71 years that nothing is impossible. I belong to SAMC here in Tucson, and drive a 2007 Mustang V-6. I noticed from the picture of the Falcon that you have a cols air intake on it. I have one on mine too and got a real power boost from that plus the two and a half inch Magnaflow exhaust. I am now in touch with BBK to see if anyone makes a supercharger that will fit under the hood of my Stang. Maybe you would know. I want it to stay out of sight, possibly to mount so it will turn withe engine. Great story about your Wife and car. Congratulations on both wars for her………..Sincerely, Mike
Hi Mike,
You said, “Great story about your Wife and car.” Just to be clear, Kelly’s not my wife. She’s a friend from the Nostalgia drags and from the fordsix.com discussion board. I hope we become good friends, but I think her husband will won’t like it if we get married!
these are totally awesome!
Craig,
Thanks for the great article. We appreciate your efforts and time to
provide a venue to show off for racers and to support our cause. Since
you took the pictures and did the article we ran a 10.89 at 122mph at
Speedworld for the Nostalgia drags. Unfortunately I broke on the first
round of eliminations. I was up against a Hemi Mopar. He dialed an
11.85 and I dialed an 11.10. I spun off the start and was gaining at the
top end when “boom”. The timing chain let loose. I still had an 11.27!
One thing we were very happy with was the ability to run 1.52 60ft times
and make lower ET with less boost. We believe the gains came from the
ported head and improved cam timing.
Will is now re-engineering the cam/crank timing gear/chain for the 250
with our machine shop. We will be using a 302 based set up which should
better retain the cam gear, allow for an adjustable gear and for a
stronger chain.
We’ll keep you posted. I’ll let Will chime in for any technical
corrections if needed.
Kelly
Hey, that looks pretty good! Can’t wait! Not any good hot rod films out there.
Nice work.
Are you going to highlight both the painted on and the vinyl penstriping?
Vinyl pinstriping isn’t art is it? I’ll only cover the painted on pinstriping.
Came over from the UK for the car show and had a blast ! I also had heard some stories about the quality of the cars that show up. Most of the cars I saw though were of a very high quality. Some really beautiful kustoms built to a very high standard.
Look out Vegas – we’ll be back !
That was a cool read! Kind of a bummer that the rules did that to Force’s team. Oh well, I guess that’s racing.
We’ll probably see you out there, Pike!

How about with some wide steelies in red and white or something? More retro! Can’t get over how cool this thing looks. Make me want to go buy a Cube today!! :P
How was the suspension/handling? And did you drive (or ride in) the CVT or the manual?
Hey Hectare, thanks for your comment.
The suspension was good. I was hoping it was a little soft so that if I get one and lower it about 2 inches with bigger wheels and lower-profile tires, the ride won’t be too harsh. I think it’s ready for customization!! I drove the CVT only. The tuning was good. It’s so easy to drive with the CVT, not sure if I’ll get that or the M/T. Still gotta drive the M/T.
Surf3 doesn’t do it for me, but what a great idea! How about a bunch of Ed Roth inspired Cubes. Since no sunroof for the US, how about an Orbitron or Beatnik Bandit inspired Cube? Bubbles on the roof would be awesome!!!
Waaaay cool! Let me know when it’s time to build one, I’ll help!
Now my new background desktop pic! :0 Ok, I’ll stop commenting. LOL
Thanks for the reply! That’s good to hear about the suspension. I have read in a few places that the handling etc. wasn’t very good, while other places said it was fine. I’ll be test driving a manual tomorrow to see (er, feel) for myself, and I can’t wait!

i have a 1962 falcon squire wagon, i think you made a killer choice. granted it has been a labor of love… well a pain in the ass but the final project is quite satisfying. ive done a full air ride setup w/ air horns. ground up motor build, etc
havent started bodywork not as brave as you. lol
Saw the Darumas this weekend at the California Screamin’ show. They were very nice. Also had Ghost do a little pinstriping for me and he killed it, mad skills. :D
Don’t know if it’s brave or stupid… I might have to punt and pay someone to finish the bodywork if I ever want to drive the Falcon! Best of luck on your project!
Interesting how about 9 months later after you wrote this story, look what’s happened to the us automakers. We’ll see where it all goes from here. It surely resembles about 1972-1974, the peak of the muscle car era. Will we see turbo 4 Mustangs and Camaro’s again. :) Part of me wishes yes. Now that we can make 300hp reliably from a 2.0L turbo 4 and get 25mpg. :)
Hilarious PCK! Cool idea for sure. I’ll take a ‘72 beetle in baby blue with a huge dent in the pass door and when you hit the brakes, it does an automatic lane change (get that blinker ready). ha ha
7.64 seconds? Wow! Plus it looks amazing with those huge rear wheels/tires. Sick Seconds is definitely going to be sick if they can do it! Keeping my eye out…
I remember totally falling for the Hot Rod Mag april fools joke and the “AMC Comeback”. I was bummed when I found out it was bogus. The concepts looked awesome! I really dig the Hive Buzzing Hornet concept.

I have a 1955 corvette engine and was wondering if it is worth anything the serial number is 0275992T55F it is on my 1963 Willis and in very good condition.
Can you tell me anything about the engine?

Hi Emil, doubt you’ll get much help in this post. Go to a Corvette forum and ask there. If they say it’s not worth anything then immediately want to buy it, be suspicious!
Josh;I’m usually not a G-machine fan as so many are too tacky, proportions are off,but you guys have nailed the look and[hopefully]the performance.Your Comet has turned out BEAUTIFULLY ! Of course I am a bit biased, being a 65 Comet owner more than 42 years! ROY.

Sweet! The modern Vdub Bus for sure! Lovin’ the popout windows. ‘Nother nice rendering of the Cube.
You know I’m reading! :) Very informative story. You MUST post that vapor vid. Sounds kind of cool.
Interesting stuff about nitriding cams.
Dude! It’s not that cool! (funny, but not cool!) I had to find out the hard way that gasoline wipes off sunblock!
Interesting info. I wonder if the cam builders are gonna start selling more cams treated or adapted for these new oils?
I just spent $50 on some zinc additive for my cars.
Just a little FYI Shell Rotella 15/40 for diesels still has all the additives the old oil had due to most diesel engines are still flat tappet, also works great for break-in oil
I’ll vouch for Pike, it’s funny at first but that wares out quick when you’re trying to play catch up with a bunch of racing vintage roadsters through the scenic routes of Arizona.
Thanks Jeff. I’ve heard the same thing. The additives for normal oil are pricey too. I have a friend who sells Amsoil. Gonna check on that. I have it in my daily now. $40 for oil and filter, but it’s good for 25,000 miles!
I’m still thinking to get one of these as the MyRideisMe.com cruiser… or do I get off my butt on the Falcon Wagon?
Sounds like a really fun event, sorry I missed it!
Cool classic cars and classic purdy girls… wish I’d have made it….
I’m thinking get off your butt on the Falcon. These Cubes are $15k plus whatever you need to mod it to your liking.
This car is sick. My dad and i have been planning on building a blown 572 and strapping it in a T-Bucket. We were planning this build because we did not know of anyone with this same set up. We might have to change plans a little now. Sweet car.
Thanks for the comment Cody. I think this car’s for sale in the MyRideisMe.com discussion forum. That way, you and your dad can each have a blow 572 T bucket!
I really dig that “Bellflower” render. Love me some Galaxie Customs!
Just fixed an error. Pat’s record for C/BGR was actually 219mph, not 217mph. :P Thanks Pat! Those 2 mph were probably the toughest!

that is a drop dead gorgeous shot…..=]
I couldn’t agree with you more on the melding of the two categories. Having a sweet Pro Touring classic with some deep dish three-piece rims flush with the fenders is the next evolution of tuning, “Pro-Tuning”. Coming up, loving classic and modern automobiles since I was a child, I’ve had my share of personal projects. From my euro-lowriding days in the early ’90s to the explosion of import tuning, and then finally getting my ‘70 Skylark with a stock 350 on Rally’s and GT Qualifiers, and lastly my ‘01 F150 Supercrew drop with Hotchkis suspension on 22’s. Although I still plan on making my truck, “hellaflush,” making a classic with the amenities of a modern sports car is now my focus. I can only imaging how sweet a Falcon (”Falc-dog” is what we say from the Bay Area) would look dropped low and sweet on a staggered, deep rimmed, flush setup with a blown 5.4L from a Lightning or even a Ford GT. Sick!
Falc-dog! I like that. ha ha Thanks for the comment. The ‘70 Skylark sounds like a cool project. Pro-Tuning, I like that name. Glad you chimed in Kel!
The Pinup Angels are truly angels! I’ve had the honor to photograph several of them.
i love this idea! its been on my mind for ages and i think it will work brilliantly as long as its executed tastefully, not too much poke, just nice and flush. ive also been wondering what a fenderless ‘32 would look like sitting on the floor with some dished wheels & streched tyres (yes i realise having no fenders cancels out the whole “flush” premise)
[...] What do you think of the whole idea? Let them know over at http://www.myrideisme.com/Blog/pro-touring-hellaflush-ill-touring/ [...]
Just noticed the Mooneyes Pinstriping Starter Kit. Tempted to pick that up and try my hand at pinstriping. ha ha
I should start with water colors first. :)
I gotta say, I’m stoked to know that someone else sees it this way!
I’ve been a proponent of perfect fit and subtle modifications (subtle in the sense that you may not catch it at first glance… even if it took an extra 100 hours of massaging a panel!), and the whole HellaFlush/Pro-Tuning concept NAILS the idea.
If you’ve looked at a late-model ‘Vette (Z-06, namely), dig on how great they look with the wheels pushed out, and how amazing one looks when care is taken with aftermarket wheels and tires… It has to go beyond the simple “Well my buddy runs 18’s/19’s, so it’ll look good”, right into “how much available space is there, or how much room can we make, and what can we fill that space with PERFECTLY?
I’m loving this… thanks for bringing it to light!!
“Horton Hears a Who?” Love these old pics! I wish my dad had more of his hot rods in the early 70’s. Thanks for sharing. More more!

Hi! I’m a Falcon fan and as Clifford says 6=8. We use to prepare AMC inline sixes with 318 cu. pistons and they ran very fast. A woman in a fast car, Yes.
Does it get better than a JUSTICE HOWARD shot?
I submit that it cannot.
Simply awesome my friend….
I have been following the build on this car since he posted it up on Pro-Touring .com an have been a fan ever since.
I have also gained some friends in the deal, when Ron and friends brought the car to our event (PSMC) Thank you it was a blast.
I have a shop car that is on the budget build trying to finish it up at the moment, and Ron has helped with that by bartering a 04 dodge seat i had laying around for a computer and a tune for my 2001 Z06 motor with kinsler fuel injection.
Which was also bartered for from another friend for body work on his car.
The wheels for my car are the same as Ron’s Because he hooked me up with the same guy he bought his from.
Thank you Ron you have been an inspiration to us all.

I love the low stance, it fits the car perfect….=]
I love to see it when our site has helped people find the things they need for their projects and their passions!
Another killer low-budget build! These are just the kinds of cars the hobby needs right now, and looking over the project’s history, it’s only gotten better and better!
Inspiring to say the least, and easily a top ten in my book…
Why would you lower an Armada like that? Looks pretty stupid…
I got a calender at Tuning World show and saw in it the Mustang spoken of by flat6. I agree, design is horrible. And never heard of Eddie Paul but calls himself tuning icon.
awesome post guys!
[...] $5000 Budget Mustang I’d been following this particular build thread for a while, when I noticed that the kind folk over at My Ride Is Me had done a feature on it recently. Nice page !!
I love that site!!
Pure awesomeness, and well worth a stop. Hell, the Jungle Jim photos alone are worth a stop. Great inspiration for paint ideas on your next throwback car!
I’m gonna have to go next time Greasegirl! Pinups and hot rods for the win!
Very cool article! Yes artwork helps so much especially when the customer lives a way away and modifications are done… but then again, I’m spoiled working with Brian, and the art shown is stuff he did with us at Strange Motion at http://www.strangemotion.com
Thanks for stopping by Tim! As the builder for “Resilience” the custom car shown here in the story, you know first hand the difference between having and not having a pro doing your designs. Thanks again!
Exactly… The artwork definitely “illustrates” (sorry) just how well communication works when the owner, builder and artist are all involved and on the same page.
It helps, of course, to have a builder like Tim who has a great sense of design, and can turn those ideas into reality as well.
This was a great project, from Tim’s rolling start and amazing ideas, through Erik and Paul’s open-mindedness, it was just a blast to draw away! Thanks, guys.
I want to say that I loved the article by Bill Stinson. I personally know Bill from when I was younger. Everything Bill said about Jimmy was true. Jim married my twin sister Gloria and I married the guy across the street from Jim, who’s name was Gary. Quite a coincidence. Jim was great with cars and that was his life. He knew them inside and out. The silver bullet was his pride and joy. IT was the fastest car on Woodward Ave. And can be seen at the Woodward Cruise each August along Woodward Ave. from nine mile to eighteen mile road. Quite a stretch to see cars from all over the world to be a part of this one day event. I have been there since the beginning and have seen Jim autograph his t shirts and have pictures taken of him with his fans. Jim was proud and yet humble, Thank you Bill for writing this great tribute about Jim. I’m sure everyone who reads it will appreciate your honesty and caring about your friend Jimmy Addison.

i dont know if this is the best way to question, I have been given the opportunity to organize a car show and it is something like what you did. I wanted to know if their is any way of giving some tips and information on how you did it?
Its freakin sick…my dad owns a SE 2006 armada (silver) and we are placing chrome trim on it..we allready put the two rear/side door handles (chrome) and the main rear door handle too..looks nice..we just looking for some other chrome trim, a all chrome grille and some nice rims with thick lip and low profile..probably some 24s ur something..so yea bro ur rides sick..
Ed the Ace left out half the showmanship of Jungle Jim… Jungle Pam! When Jim came to the line crew members abandoned the pits to watch Jungle Pam guide Jim back from the burnout.
At about 12 years old this was a life lesson.
gotta love it….=]

I second Swanee, that car is crazy cool! Not sure if I’d like it better “finished” or “ratty” as is? :) More more!
I would have LOVED to hear that thing fire up!!!
Got any more detailed photos of the motor?
I totally agree with you, Hechtspeed.

No, but I have more detailed shots of Mimi La Minkz!

I love them..I will probably never in my life ever be able to afford anything like those or even to build one EXCEPT the Pinto…a less beefier version of the Pinto is doable…some of you may remember that guy featured on “Hot Rod” magazine with a last name of Morgan from California. He would put Turbo Fours from Ford Rangers and Thunderbirds and their Merc counterparts into a Pinto and add a few more affordable tricks a voila…sleeper!
i hope ashley force wins the championship in 2009, i will be pulling for her every race, hope she goes and wins every race the rest of he season ,and kicks some butt , i am a huge mustang fan ,and a huge force racing fan as well , even if she comes up short ,she is still young and talented enough to win it in 2010, with the new mustang coming out next year , shes beautiful ,and got loads of talent like her dad , so i am behind her all the way, win or lose, so go ashley and kick some a.. your no.#1 fan ,neal SHES BUILT FORCE TUFF!!!!!!!!!! That is wicked cool! Naturally aspirated 6 going 9’s?! Straight up Rad!
Wow, that’s a gorgeous sedan! I love the color and sedan body!
Hi this was a fun car to build yes it is chopped 8″ has 32 windshield 34 drip rails sets on 32 rails the rear half of the body is sectioned 4 1/2″ with model A roaster inner fenders and the rear panel was pie cut 3 1/2″ to bring it out and flatten the back the dash is out of a 36 ford and there is a ton more mod’s made to this body.
P.S. I had a lot of fun building this car i hope Otis has a lot of fun with it also.
how cool is that front wheel & tyre set up!
Thanks for the great article about Otis’s car, Mark did a fantastic job building it and Otis is taking it to a new mark, we did the induction and straightened out the cam situation for Otis, and helped on the headers as well. The interior is unreal, just wait to you see it. Hope to come back to Scottsdale with Otis and bobby again soon. thanks Sam Woodard
Mark and Sam,
Since you saw the story, I assume Otis did too? Glad to see you guys checking it out and checking the facts. I like to get it right and based on Mark’s comments, I think I did pretty good. Please tell your friends about the story.
There’s a tiny picture above that looks like an envelope. Use that to email the story to a friend.
Thanks again,

I’ll register on your website but if you need to get any more info before I leave I can be reached at oldcrowaz. Welcome to Salt Insanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crow
Thanks AZ Old Crow! I’ve removed your email address for your own sanity, but I got it. We’ll look for you at Speedweek. We’ll be camping at the Bend in the road and we’ll be attending the “Salt Talks” on Sunday night. I’ve heard the same thing before… Land Speed Racing is about the people!
Right on Old Crow (love the Old Crow P-51’s by the way). Can’t wait for Saltweek, I mean, Speedweek. We’ll look for that sweet chopper of yours. :) Thanks for the comment!
Ken, sweet pickup! Don’t paint it! It has character the way you have it. We can’t wait for the coupe! Nice story GreaseGirl!
Fact Mike Mcgurie beat the bullet with a 69 Camaro. Dick Arons, Jim Wangers.and many others know this. 7 some years ago I asked Jimmy Addison in front of Harold Sulivan AND Galen Govier. Jimmy said Mike beat the bullet a few times. Larry Turner and Steve Mair never had a car together. Larry Turner had a Hemi Roadrunner named Vanishing Point that ran Low 11s threw mufflers. Steve Mair had a 72 Camaro that ran 10.60s Threw only 2 mufflers and it had only 1 4bbl carb.
I dont understand why this “never been beat” contiues to this day.
Every car gets beat or you aint racing
Go Jimmy, go!
Good job sis!
The Hornet is absolutely awesome! And I intend to use many of your ideas on my coupe. I’d been trying to envision something like the ‘70 Challenger hood scoops in my mind, but your illustration is even nicer than I imagined…and the swiss cheese front bumper is way cool, and I have the front air dam in the garage. Am toying with using 14″ Motor Wheel Spyders I have, along with a conservative paint scheme, likely a dark emerald green, so it”ll be sort of a sleeper. I’d also like to change taillights but am not too thrilled with the Mustang lights either. But are you gonna share a rear angle view of the Hornet?
Thanks guys! Glad you dig the little Hornet… Just one of those ideas that had been “buzzing” around my brain for far too long.
@ Bruce: Very cool indeed! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
The Motor Wheel Spiders will definitely have that ’70’s flair!! (always liked those wheels, as they look very industrial, and almost futuristic!)
I just haven’t had the time to hash out a rear view, as this was a side project, and paying jobs always come first… But I’d be more than willing to sit with you and hash out a few ideas, and make you a great deal on a rendering…
(I’m thinking a tail light with that AMC feel, keeping the “ovalled-rectangle” feel, and some minor panel work to keep the theme all buttoned-up over that rear bumper/pan area)
Thanks for looking in, and many thanks for the kind comments! Now get out there and build it!
Great article. Thanks alot! Just to update everyone, Chris did hit 8’s this weekend at the IMSTAR event at Maryland International Raceway. He won the event and his best time was a 8.86 @ 168. That is the new record.
HI CRAIG….THE TOP TEN HOTRODS AND CUSTOMS WEB SITE IS UP AND RUNNING ! NEEDS A LOT OF FINE TUNING http://www.toptenhotrodsandcustoms.com
cool …but needs bullit wheels to go with it
Yeah, I remember this one…..Lots to like. Interesting way he cut the lower cowl to resolve his mini channel job.
I can’t imagine that the Civic really weighs 2550lbs. If that is true, there is a couple hundred pounds that can be shaved easily. Even a Civic rally car with extra tools, fluids, jack, spare tires and two seats and a 75 lb skid plate weighs at least hundred pounds less. Would probably really scoot at 2000 lbs.
Great how-to.
Wish I could win the gas cap because it would really dress up my 96 Laser red GT which is all stock exterior.
the seadan is not chaneld the floor hight is stock the frame has not been modifid all you have to do is cut the inter lip off on the sup structure that allows the body to set on the frame like a 32 body
I should win the Cap because I love Mustangs. There, I’m now entered. IT’s that easy!
I don’t want to win but whoever does make sure you replace all the bolts in the surround ring with stainless steel or clear them so they don’t rust and make trails down your shiny new gas cap cover. Happened to my genuine ford unit in a few weeks time :)
Nice! I could use one for my car!!!!
I’ll see ya on the salt!
thank you very much for the awesome review of our show. see you at next years show, and see you at billetproof 2009!!!
This Bullitt gas cap looks great but it would look even better on my 95 GT. I should win this because I’m 16 and don’t have the money to buy it.
I just had a full blown makeover to the exterior of my car. I don’t need this for me, but I wanted to give the one that was on my car to a friend with a 94 GT. Turns out the black one I bought for mine just was not good! They repainted my chrome one, which I was going to give to her. I kinda already promised her one, & I was left out to dry by the body shop!
If I could win this, it would keep m,y plans going! Thanks!!
You can see my car here:

Final pics are on page 10 & on.
The salt is going to be sweet this year ,
good luck to all and see you there
Am I going to see you there???
Eli,
Why not add your pics at MyRideisMe.com? The point is to NOT have to say page 10 of a forum post that’ll be impossible to find in a few days… plus you can organize them by interior, exterior, engine, suspension… check it out at my garage:
droptoppony, my 1st 2 doors did that. I finally stepped & bought a better door. The other 2 was a cheaper quality of it. Once I bought it, problem stopped. I’m thinking that this one is one that won’t rust. The place I bought it from isn’t even open for business anymore.
pikesan, I am very dumb now! I never even heard of that site. I’m trying to join right now. What is your user name on there?
This is a great mod for the exterior of our Mustangs. I’d love to have this gas cap because it would go well with my “Frankenstang” build. I have built my dream car from parts out of many different year and model Mustangs. I have done the PI swap with Bullitt intake manifold and I have the bullitt pedals on my 98 GT. I think this would help complete my “Bullitt” modifications to set my car off.
How about this one:
http://www.kustomrama.com/index.php?title=Main_Page
It’s a site hosted in Norway, dedicated to traditional rods and kustoms. They’re pretty big in Scandinavia. It’s a Wiki site and I started by making some spelling and grammar changes. Somehow I ended up as a co-sysop. I still do the proof-reading (I need to do some right now) and sometimes add new stuff.)
I did a search for that site here, but came up empty-handed. If it’s already known…well…I’ll give it the Rat’s seal of approval.
RtR
Looks nice, one of these would be sweet on my 95 GT vert…
First thing I noticed was the Deuce windshield, best lookin’ ‘29 tudor I can remember.
Very cool. Would look great with the bullitt wheels I recently swapped onto my 96gt. I also think I should win this because I’m a huge fan of the Steve McQueen in general and the film Bullitt specifically (course, I’m pretty sure the gas cap was not at all in the same location on the original).
Hey im working on a Pixel vision of this car. I got the rear part done but im haven trouble whit the front view of it . So i wounding if you did a front view. I just love the idea of this car . Thanks Niko

Nice to meet you Rocky and Bonneville Bob! Good luck and see you on the salt.
Sorry, commenting on my own blog is lame I know. But, I love these 2 shots. I can just imagine what pikesan is thinking here as he’s on the Salt for the first time in his roadster. I kept telling him he needed to bring his car and it took lots of work to pull it off, but I think it was worth it.
Man, that pinto motor sounded so sweet, and it got A LOT of attention. Many people told him to pull over or stop so they could snap a picture or chat about their pinto powered race cars of yesteryear.
Pikesan, you and your Ride are very inspiring to all hot rodders.
See you on the Salt buddy!
Look at that sharp crew! Can’t wait to see your pics of me riding shotgun in that roadster. What a ball that was, even if I did have to sacrifice my nice Oakley’s to the Salt gods. ha ha
Good times GreaseGirl, see you on the Salt

I’m looking into being a photography, specializing in glamour/pin-up. These are great tips. I love the one about corsets. Personally, I think the one on the right looks great on curvy women but look horrible and unflattering on skinny women. I understand why you wouldn’t use them though. The one on the left is a true vintage style.
According to my Speedweek pic folder at home, I took exactly 700 pictures. Whoa!
700 exactly. Just counted!
Well…let me correct myself and say that we have well over 1000 pictures covering Bonneville to date!
So glad we could all be at the salt together…till the next adventure!!!
dam thats a cool car
love the ride along to 386…man the sound of the motor at speed is awsome …..must be some high gears in that

Those are very cool shots. I’d love to go to Speedweek sometime.
Looking forward to the pics & the stories.
A sad & tragic thing. My heart goes out to the family.
Writing from Canada…just stumbled across this site through Google images. Looks great!!! 2 questions – is Jalopy Race part of the Movie Deuce of Spades or is that another movie entirely on its own?
2) Any release date…and any way I can see it up in Canada or how can I purchase a copy?
Keep making films!! Great job.
Jan Pastucha
Hey Jan,
The Jalopy race is a small clip of the movie Deuce of Spades. I know that Faith is working hard to finish the movie and I think she’s almost done. The movie will be available all over, don’t worry! I’m sure you’ll get a copy.
My sincerest regards to the family, May Barry rest in peace! Crow.
Thanks, this helps get the spark back in my 1965 comet 404. What a beautiful ride you have. Hopefully I’ll get to see it in person someday.

In 1968 I lived in the neighborhood also. I had a 66 GTO that you would remember at Jimmy’s Sunoco. At that time I worked with Bob Felt and Joe Fitzpatric at the Gulf Station (13mi and Greenfield) owned by Ken Smith. I was 18 in 1968. I also ran Presto Auto Wash next to Big Town Restaurant. We hung around at Jimmy’s to get our 260 gas and then head to Totem Pole. Yes the memories were great. I now live outside Las Vegas in the town of Overton. Any one remembering me PLEASE email!!!!!

i’ll ck the bolt to see if they are stainless or cleared and report back …..when is the winner going to be picked?
I can remember standing at the front door at jimmy’s sunoco watching them unload jimmy’s new dodge truck from the factory. Jet black half ton short bed hemi hurst line lock and all the goodies straight from the factory. The first thing he did was put it up on the hoist. I think Kenny DeMire was also there.
What a bunch of awesome vehicles. We are working on a 700hp 1973 Barracuda right now that would fit in perfectly at this show.
Let’s see it Jon! Tell us what’s happening at PrecisionCarRestoraction.com by joining MyRideisMe.com. You’ll be able to add all your custom rides to your own garage.
I’ve seen this car on Ratsun.net, his son’s 510 is a nice piece of machinery
Wow! Everything that guys like in one place at one time!
Our Deepest Sympathies go out to Barry’s Family and all those who knew him.
Jack & Jill
Those Photo’s are really off the Charts.
Big Sky, Salt Flats and pikesan doing what he loves!!!
You really captured the essence of the event.
It can’t get much better than than that.
Greaser Girl – Great Story!!!!
I really liked the way you described the scene from a first time visitors perspective.
Like Mamasan I’m not a car guy. I’m a communitee guy. Consequently I enjoy hearing, reading and seeing what it is like when a group of Like Minded individuals get together and share what they are passionate about.
You hit on some great topics like sharing the time with your Dad, How other families make it an event for everyone and really liked the Photo’s.
my first time at b-ville, I loved it and will return. great pics.
I like it. I have a 63 stock.
Are you kidding me . . . ? the only gasser at the car show. Who was judging this contest. I saw a bad ass Red 38 Chevy gasser that beat this yellow pile hands down. Did you not walk the whole show? How can you miss the C&C Speed and Custom gasser across from the 1930 coupe from Japan.
Hey Genny! Sorry I missed the C&C Speed and Custom gasser…I thought I walked the whole show – but there was so much to look at and enjoy. These picks aren’t anything official, we weren’t judging the show…they’re just some highlights of things I enjoyed. We’d all love to see the 38 though…if ya have a picture, email please!
What a cool idea! Anything that can be added to a meet is a great idea.
Looking at hot rods is one of my favorite things to do, but when you are at an event you only can look at vehicles for so long, it is nice to have other activities to turn to.
I happen to be able to drive by Gene’s Shop out in the desert near Mojave ,on my way to work every day, i still slow down every day to see if i can see what he is doing .He has a “few” cars he is working on …mostly old mercs.
nice truck. i have a 65 dodge 200 with a factory 318 ci, 4 spd and 4.10 dana. still has original paint and is from california. it is a custom also, but mine has the 4 headlights. they went from 4 headlights to 2 headlights in the middle of the 1965 year.
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. :) Cheers! Sandra. R.
The shots that Jumped out at me were:
The Little Car,
The Little Dude &
The 30 Ford Customis-zed in Japan.
The Ford looked like a Cartoon or something out of the Mask.
It must have been is an unbelievable Design Effort to get those Surfaces!
Amazing.
Thanks for sharing.
man they are stunning, i like to draw cars myself but i am blown away by those. Seriously inspiring stuff, thanks for sharing them
I gotta love your T-shirt!
Hi Tom, I saw your work in an old mag I found…Classic Automobile 1998. Decided to check out your website. Astonishing paintings!! Brilliant use of colour and very expressive use of brushwork. Your paintings show feeling, power, strength….and most of all… emotion!! I really like the ‘buttery’…wet on wet technique you use . Brings to mind Skip Liepke and Gregory manchess. Best of all is the subject matter. ‘Roaring metal’….love it all. Goodonya from Australia. Keep up the great work.
Cheers
Tony
Great Vid GreaseGirl! More vids! Post one of that Stude firing on all 8! That’d be so cool!
GREAT concept ! I always enjoy your articles.
I knew there was a reason I liked ya!!!
I love just about anything that moves……=]
I have seen a scion like the the one up top except it didn’t have the woody panels.
It was cream with a white roof, white walls with half moons, and a wooden luggage rack. And it was sweet!!
I was helping Freud sell the 50/50 tickets at the Salt talks this year.
Good food, good music, cold beer and a great reason to party………The Old Crow.
I bought a ‘64 cyclone this summer —-a good solid body w/all the correct trim—- it will replace the one I had in high school which I sill have for a parts car. oh by the; high school was 37 years ago!!!! Will keep you up dated on the progress.Nick’s 62 Galaxie —–I was there when you took the pic—-I’m Nick’s Dad.
Hey Gary, I was there too! I met Nick online before we went to Bonneville. Please sign up at MyRideisMe.com and start adding pictures of your Cyclone. We’ve got some great tools to help you document your build. Thanks for the comment!
gotta love it….keep em’ comin’….=]
where could I find some of the really cool pinstriped t shirts….thanks
I just learned that Kirk Wright passed away. I don’t know any of the details but read it at this public forum: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/80257/106829.html?1253483288
God speed Kirk! I would have loved a follow-up story, you were an amazing guy disguised as a typewriter repair man!
This is awesome! I have a 73′ in green and I had gotten to the point where I was thinking about contracting a drawing like this because they just don’t exist, but I am very happily wrong. Great work, this is close to what I’d like to do to my car.
Big thumbs up from a AMC owner and fan!
Please let Brian Stupski, the mad genius behind Problemchildkustoms.com know! Feedback like this will keep in sharing these kinds of “just for fun” drawings and sketches.
Hey, Downeast_AMC, don’t let it stop you from contracting a rendering anyway!!
Glad you enjoyed the piece… it’s a fun car with a TON of untapped potential… They’re so funky to begin with, and REALLY take to the aggressive look. Made my day to read your comment, and always great to hear about another AMC coming together!
Can’t wait to see what you come up with on yours, and HUGE thanks again to Craig and the gang here at MRIM for lettin’ me play!
I do like too many cars and if I was rich like Jay Leno, I’d have a “corral” of them too. So being poor the case, lol, not only do I like too many, I don’t have the money for even one special one!!!! I want a 60-65 GMC pickup but if I ever get another truck it’s gotta be good on gas so I probably will be stuck with something else. What you see at my web page is when I had a “little” extra money. I got my eyes out for a freebie I can toss and save into the garage until….. maybe someday.
Cool stuff Greaser Girl.
I like that wagon from Gasoline Galery.
Sweet !
Thanks for sharing that.
I love seeing stories from England, Sweden, Germany, etc.
and checking out the cars & the car culture over there.
Great story. Cool stuff !

One of the coolest rat rods I have ever seen, I could only imagine what a hand full that would be in a full on run.
Never the less simplistic art in motion, well in my opinion anyway.
Thanks
I understand how you feel. I work at a restoration and customization shop so I see a new car that I want ever week. From a ‘52 Buick to a 2008 Challenger.
roller cam is better hands down regardless
Man, wish I could go! It’s not far from my fam.
oh my god. that is so sick.
Great car. FEDs and 6 cylinders were meant to be.
Mine is on my website. Are there others?
i really like the model 80 . i have a 61 im begining the resto and wondering what you used for the front suspension and if you could give me some good advice
As mopar lover and a scale model builder.Ive been looking for complete photos of this legend for some 12 years.this car will always remian a legend, aslong as we the street racer talk and compare it to all street racers past and present.I found this car just surfing the web for photos for my model projects. This car has also been at the chrysler musem, and to answer the question over who has the real car vin numbers from chrysler.even if car was never titled by chrysler they still have it on production records.
Thanks for your comment Daniel. I think the question of “real” car is more of a spiritual question now. Is it the engine or the body that makes a car real? Or is it both? Harold has the real body, even Manuel admits that. The question is who’s got the original engine or do they both have an engine that Jimmy Addison used? It’s a cool story and one of the first I wrote, so I’ll always like it. If you want me to send a higher resolution picture, let me know.
Pikesan
Thanks for your reply Don! I dig the 6’s and will be keeping the one in my Falcon wagon. Your 6-powered, vintage styled digger is cool! For everyone else to see: Don’s “Senior Dragster” What did it run?
I restored the front end on my 63 with new parts e.g.tie rod, drag link, brakes but the rest was OK.
Are you staying stock? What do you need? Where are you located?
Ed
8.43 in the 1/8th . I am hoping to improve on that but it has just 4 passes on it so far. It sure is fun though for an old fart to feel the wind in his face one more time.
I guess the build was as much fun as driving it.
All the best on you Falcon BTW.
Don
Hi guys:
Also I’m working on a 1973 Scout hot rod. Took it to the drags once. Do you know of anyone who has chopped the roof on one of these?
Ed
Hello,
Nice job!!
how much did you lower in front?
Did you just turn the torsion bars & how much as compared to original?
I think you had to cut down the rubber blocks in front?
Is the suspension travel & alignment still ok now?
thanks a lot!
Filip
Very cool to see an Ohio Hobbiest Racer making the headlines. Congrats.
Thanks for the coverage on my Cruise on Central. It cost thousands of dollars to put this show on. For the small handful of guys that have called and told me off, and said I was trying to get rich, and be like Goodguys please stay home and let all the great guys that always attended for years have the space. I work very hard on this show as well as My Kool Fm show which is at Westgate this year on the 24th, and to get slammed for 5.00 really, Anyone thats wants to pay all the expenses so it can remain free, please step forward, I love doing this and I won’t let a few idiots ruin it for everyone else. By the way I attended Goodguys last year, had to join ,paid 75.00 to enter and got a cup……………………….but I did not complain, I choose to go. See you at Central, and thank you so much to all the great guys out there that have supported me.

Can’t wait for the pics!
I N C R E D I B L E , Fun and Nostalgic….What a Night….! ! ! !
We had never done this event before, but always attend the 94.5 KOOL Car Show that Arizona Sportswear and KOOL does as a joint venture
( Don’t miss this awesome show Sat October 24th in Arrowhead just North of the 101 and 72nd or 76 th Street at the Church)
Back to last night October 8th..
…………… The Cars, The Cruisin and The Atmosphere was GREAT…
Hearing that in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s Central was the place to be on Friday and Saturday Night…..”running the lanes”…..and …” layin’ rubber ”
There had to have been nearly 800 or more cars….and 5,000 people plus… lining both sides of the street… from Indian School to Washington? All Age Groups, in lawn chairs and stanging, shooting pictures, razzing drivers to ” light em up” ….
Awesome Muscle Cars, Classy Classics, Hot LowRiders…you have to see it to believe it ! Is there another one of these Cruisin Central in the Spring??? Let me know !
TOO BAD… that some “car owners” can’t pay the $5.00 to enjoy and display their $20,000 to $60,000 plus …Muscle Cars, Show Cars, or Prestine Classics.. plus enjoy the pay back you get in complements about your car and the new people you meet is priceless.
ALSO TOO BAD.. that the American Automoblie Manufacturers couldn’t attend a few of these types of events and see how the PUBLIC and the CAR ENTHUSIAST treasure and display their Pride and Appreciation for the ICONIC CARS of yesterday…when in AMERICA .. WE BUILT INCREDIBLE CARS… “once”.
Anyway you cut it.. this TRADITION! “CRUISIN on CENTRAL”
HAS TO BE SUPPORTED and LIVE ON….! ! !
and to Arizona Sportswear MANY THANKS ….. !
and Nancy Perry , you’re ONE COOL GAL…..!
See you at the Church on Sat, Oct 24th… for the NEXT BIG CAR SHOW. !
From,
KJS…IRONINDIANS….of CAVE CREEK, AZ
(6 Pontiacs… from 1960 to 2001)
It is amazing what they have done with this vehicle without adding any forced induction to the engine.
Thank you so much, we only had a small handful of very rude obnoxious people and they were very abusive, I say stay home next year.
However the Kool Fm show is at Westgate Center at Glendale Ave and the 101 with over 3500 parking spaces as we outgrew the Church, please note that.
See you there, and I am so glad you enjoyed which was probably the best Central ever.
You forgot to mention that the Shifters are the organizers of the car show at VLV. I’ve been going to this event since 2001. The show did indeed make a downhill fall somewhere a few years back when everything seemed to be over exaggerated or plain black primered 4 door with red wheels. The past couple of events however, have turned around and some real quality traditional Hot Rods & customs from all over are starting to appear.
I heard of these Vega’s. I’m not surprised. It would be cool if Vega came back like described in the article. Oh and unrelated – GM screwed up by dropping Saturn and they should have kept Pontiac and dropped one line of pickups since they are the same..GMC+Chevrolet Truck.
There’s pictures up in the Photo Gallery, and here’s a link to a slide show…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvd95iaHTL0
Nancy, thanks for all your hard work (and $ I’m sure) for putting on this great event.
It’s about time you were “allowed” to reap some of the benefits and cover your expenses. It’s a great event which I will gladly pay $5 to attend. Heck, what other car show can you attend for that little bit.
Keep up the great work, which is appreciated by most.
First gen xB’s are the best man. Get one! I love mine.
Great story Hechtspeed! Can you explain what’s in those pictures at the bottom?
Dude! What the Hecht!? ha ha
Those pics at the bottom are of the pumps pumping a water/salt combination back onto the salt flats, per the agreement with the Save the Salt committee.
What the? I think a train on a falcon would look way better…with flake of coarse
we got a box and love it be the 2nd gen… got wheels for it, new speakers and sub and a lowering kit. Installed soon….
I´d like the most of the car drawings!
I´m german and can understand when saying the Bug or “Käfer” sucks!!!
The newone is rond and made for women it´s nasty!!!
I saw the Bug in every magazine in the TV and mostly it will be collecting.
Really happy to check out your site! I worked on Lowrider Magazine #1, being thereby founding art director, and my work is in LRM October ‘79 to May ‘81. I have to get another look at your photos and comments, my site will include a lot of my graphics and illustrations, probably cartoons as well. Not the least will be my own auto designs. Good Luck to you, Tony.
If they like it I say leave them alone. It takes all kinds. I visit NSRA shows as well as Hot Import Nights. Nostalgia drags and NOPI drags. Doesn’t mean one is better than the other, just different.
I really enjoy Greasegirls articles, they are VERY informative and amybe I could even change a tire. Thanks Greasegirl!
I just got back from the Daytona Dream Cruise this weekend, where “Deuce of Spades” was test-shown. I wanted to like it. I really did. But I couldn’t. When…IF…the movie is ever released and you see it, you’ll understand why.
The writing is amateur, the acting is stilted. The cut we all saw ran over two hours. Every time we thought “OK, it’s finally over!” yet another tedious flashback sequence occurred. Why didn’t we leave? It’s like watching a train wreck, it’s fascinating to watch. Key sequences were filmed at night and so dark you couldn’t make out what was going on onscreen. The lead character (how narcissistic is it of the director to name the lead character after herself?!) had an odd accent that was never explained in this set-in-America movie. I’m sure the curse words used were there to bump up the rating of the film from G or PG to PG13, theoretically attracting more movie-goers. There was the flagrant use of the word “whop” to refer to an Italian character. If they had been black, what do you think the black community would have thought of the repeated use of ‘n*gger’? Hugely offensive to me. And, no, I’m not Italian.
Sorry to disappoint, this is by no means a modern “American Graffiti.”
Ususally I have no problem letting whoever do whatever to there cars, and if they want to show them off, so be it. However……. these are wrong. The loud stereos being annoying to all and the fake V8’s out of the speakers…yikes! leave them home please!
I live in Salem Ma, the halloween capital of the world, just imagine what these people did to their car/van/trucks when they had a show on halloween weekend in downtown Salem. Blech!
Right on! 11’s, that’s fast for a naturally aspirated 302! Nice find Pike!
Thanks for stopping by at the Cure Cruise, Craig, and taking an interest in my wagon. Love your ‘63 more-door-in-progress!
That is one very cool old school Mustang. Keep up the good work.
Norm! Love the wagon. Super clean. Love hot rods, but its very cool to see a super clean stocker to remind people how real cars were made! :)
Hey !!!!! Dude !!!!!
Nice Cars !!!!!!!! LMAO !!!
LOL, You have to remember where it is coming from.
There has and always will be that element that thinks “customizing” means getting every chrome doodaa from JC Whitney, Western Auto, Pep Boys, Auto Zone, or WalMart and sticking it on their car. There are photos in my dads boxes of photos of his buddy’s car in the late 30’s with chrome air horns on the side of the hood and every chrome add on piece that the local purveyor of chrome doodads had at that time. Poor taste in automotive modifications or add on items isn’t a new thing and will never end.
My sympathy to the car dealer’s detail guy when those cars get repo’ed or traded in and have to be dejunked before going on the lot.
Luckily the Cruiser club here locally is mainly a group of retirement age people who have pretty tasteful cars and outside of the wives penchant for crybaby dolls and stuffed animals.
That was one of the hot lick cars of that era and in more than one magazine and I think on more than one cover.
Very outdated now but it still looks a lot better than today’s abortions with 24’s and rubber band tires.
I don’t know what it went for but it may have been a great buy for someone who either wanted a prime example of over the top 80’s new car custom work or who wanted to repaint it and put a factory stock appearing interior in it to have a very nice low mile original car. Anyone know what the factory trim codes were on it?
Thanks for the interest and comments. I really appreciate being on your site!
Thanks again for the kind words I’m glad you like the car.
– Randy Gillis -SFM6S477 caretaker
Appreciate your taste! Love the hot rods myself, but this wagon was one of those anomolies…did not fit into ANY mold. The Ford old-timers tell me it was a rare thing to even find one of these on any car lot in ‘65. If so, it was the one in the back row, needing a cleaning. That’s the very reason I love this ride and restored it to this extent. Very redemtive theme to the whole project.
Great pictures Hecht-man! I miss the salt… but my fever’s dying a little..
Thanks Randy! Looks like I hosed up the facts some. Glad you liked the story as much as I liked seeing your Shelby.
Hey Mr48chev, I remember it being a very good deal because the engine was super low miles and desirable for street rods and stuff today.
If you can find any of the old photos with over doodadded (just made that one up..) 30’s cars, I’d love to see them!
Very cool! I have seen a few of these setups on old 392 Hemis but never a Chevy. Anyway very cool model T.
Wow! Y’all keep showing me stuff I don’t see here anymore! Keep it coming!
Hotrod movies are always welcome. I have made an effort to collect old vintage hotrod movies, so I`ll be looking for this one.
Good luck
What?! You’re there all week? And you get to go see a race? You hosers! You better get some sick pics and cool video!
truck looks awesome im building a 66 f100 with a built 351 and trying to find a good trubo kit any ideas?
That’s right! Today finishes off the convention, tomorrow I’m headed out to Spring Mt. Ranch for some fun driving games, and Saturday’s race day!
Having SO much fun…working on getting some stuff up for you to see right now…that is before I head out to more SEMA parties tonight ;)
And just for you Hecht, I’ve got stickers too!
Very cool Kristin! Can’t wait to see what you guys have been up to!
Like the videos Kristin. You will see them on MRIM facebook. Another Great Job
Hey Jonathan,
talk to Steve over at Industrial Chassis. He’s the man with F100 and the builder of that truck. Steve’s a great guy too. http://www.industrialchassisinc.com
Super nice wagon! I like it.
Glad you like it, Devin. I get mixed reactions from the general public. Many just walk by and think it’s just some grandpa’s old car. While others take a second look and say, “Wow, now that’s an interesting restoration pick!” And the conversation begins.
Hi Kristin ! I passed you in the Hilton and on the SEMA floor a few times during the week. Wish I would have know it was YOU !!
Great coverage of the show !
Dennis
I’ve seen this car at Goodguys.
I was diggin’ it too. Very cool Chevy!
How awesome was that! Looks like you had a blast! Wish I could have done that. Can’t believe you spun out! :) Can’t wait for the race coverage!
Craig – we appreciate the time you put into this write up. I wish I could answer the questions for you. I know that the owners of the car – Ken and Ev Smith also own a 64 Fairlane that is stock and absolutely flawless. They have always been fans of the Fairlane.
As far as how is this car me? They would have to answer that one.
If I can get some answers I will update you.
Thanks agian for the coverage!

I think it could be a new trend. Good mpg, huge torque, lots of truck motors that outlasted their truck body’s, its a great way to modify your hot rod or cruiser!
I have (2) ;65 falcon 2 dr wagons….one is exactly like yours and you know what there is nothing wrong with being different….you can’t lose with a 2 dr wagon…..nothing against muscle cars as I love them too but amongst the sea of them that little jewel will always stand out…..my 2 dr wagon is in the bodyshop right now but the owner of the bodyshop is always telling me stories about people popping in and noticing the wagon…..what is even more revealing is that they are so rare in fact parts can be extremely difficult to find if you are keeping it bone stock….so keep that falcon flying high and don’t let others ruin your dreamcar
Sweet builds, both the F’Lane and Stang. Love the CF bumpers!
Dang! I bet that coupe had a chance to take the win. Those FFR 33’s are racecars draped in hot rod stealth.
I’ve been promoting the diesel as an alternative hot rod powerplant since 2003, and even Custom Rodder Magazine caught on and published a concept of mine back in 2005 (dig out your July issue from that year). Tons of potential, loads of power, and certainly almost infinitely tunable from your laptop.
I’d be remiss in leaving out that you’d certainly be unique at rod runs, rumbling through a sea of belly-button small blocks and LS-motors with a tuned smoker between the rails… Consider the number of aftermarket tuners and parts out there for these, and you could build a budget diesel quite easily with some imagination!
Hey Brian, Can you share the concept you did?
You’re absolutely right, Jeff. These are the cars that make the history of the automobile so interesting to me. After all, everyone had to start somewhere with their car purchases in 1965, and for some this was the affordable and practical option. Our wagons, too, were often the “disposable” cars of the time, not often pampered over the miles like the more high end models. Which makes them even more extraordinary as survivors.

Thanks for the nice article about my new ride. We will be tuning on the injection system tomorrow and try to get it ready for market. Many more new items to come.
Have a great day

PT Loser
It was a nice novelty car that should’ve lasted one year. Suitable for FIAT.
Dennis O, that is an awesome hot rod! Great idea! Tons of those 50-70’s, hey, even 80-90’s pickups ready for the roadster treatment! I love it!
I went inside twice. Coolest museum. You gotta go!
wow when i saw it in my hot rod mag it brought back all my childhood memories of me and my dad in the one he own and i’ll tell u what if this one is like the old general it was unstappale the v8 and 4wheel drive was unlike anything else on the road today thay just don’t make them like that any more u guyes relly did this one proud very well done
oh if u ever whant to sell this scout i’ll be more than happy to take it off ur handes
I finally saw the Eddie Paul Mustang and remembered this write up. That car is a heap of JUNK! What an ugly monstrosity. Eddie Paul is no fabricator. And I doubt he even wrote those books. This guy Eddie Paul is a joke. He takes credit for other peoples work, and the work he actually does is crappy.
Walker,
That Mustang is obviously not built for the mainstream. It’s named, “The Frog” to drive home that point. It’s also not my favorite either, but I don’t know how I could say it’s a “heap of junk” having only looked at it. If you can’t site some specific example, you’re just another hater… Are you working full time as a car builder and are you a published author?
Eddie Paul is a working man and the man behind the scenes. He builds what people ask him to build mostly on time and on budget. He works a lot with the movie industry so many of the things he builds are quite wild. Using his skills as a fabricator has allowed him to hold several patents on some very cool items. To say he is not a fabiricator is way off base.
I am glad to see Diesel engines catching on in the Street Rod world. I have been building conventional Street Rods in my shop for 30 years. I have recently made the transition to Diesel powered Street Rods. They just make more sense in the economic times we are in. They look trick and have abundance of torque, and still get great fuel milage.
I’ve been wondering what it would like like if other cabs were used or if someone used a 60’s or 70s style frame. Now I know what the cab would look like. Looks great!
I’m curious as to what the weight differences for equivalent cold-cranking batteries would be when comparing red-top to yellow-tops. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the weight savings of Optima batteries in general, but I haven’t heard a lot of discussion about the differences between them.
It sounds like yellow tops have the capacity to be more efficient, and will drain engine power less consistently than red tops. Do they only recharge after the battery has been discharged, or is it in a constant recharge state, always pulling from the alternator?
I already heard from the Optima Guys…
The weight difference from red to yellow differs from group size to group size. If you look at a group 34 for instance, the red top weighs in at about 38 pounds, the yellow top weighs in at about 43 pounds. Typically a deep cycle battery would weigh more than a starting battery if the 2 are of similar ratings (CCA/RC). One of the characteristics of a deep cycle battery is thicker grids and heavier paste. In an Optima battery the same holds true.
In a typical charging system the battery is always being somewhat charged while the alternator is also powering other electrical needs. If you have a lot of electrical needs on your car you may be placing to high a demand on the electrical system and eventually a regular (not deep cycle) battery might go dead. Extra demand on the system and charge/discharge cycling requires a battery that can handle it.
One example of why the charge is always happening is to think of the battery as your checkbook, starting the car like writing a check and charging the battery like making a deposit back to your bank account. If the battery demands exceed the vehicle’s ability to “deposit more power” you will eventually be overdrawn! If you then look at the extra stuff on the car and add them as “check writers” you’ll need more money in your account.

If you’d have seen the “thrash” in the pit you’d really understand what went into the Stromberg’s. They worked like a champ, even with the wooden riser that was whittled out of a piece of wood. See you next year on the salt! Crow.
OMG that is hot!!! her and the car. does anyone know what car that is?
So what’s up with the blue top? Marine Battery?
The entire chassis was done by Art Morrison out of Washington state. The front suspension is AME IFS with Strange Engineering adjustable coil-overs, and Wilwood disk brakes. The guy that did this chop is Marty at n2hotrods. You can contact him through his website at n2hotrods.com. He pulled four inches out of the top and laid the windshield back about 2-1/2 inches.

Thank you Pikesan!!! I was honored to give my ride is me pictures of my work for the site. What a great looking site this is too…. I’ll be out at the grand national roadster show again in January 2010 in the Suede Palace if anyone wants to say hi.
Until then, keep pounding those gears and melting those tires …. HOT RODS TO HELL!
I’ll take sons rod! Love the louvers, bomber seats and metal finish
So the power increase comes from the valves being at high lift for a longer part of the cam rotation, and from opening faster and from the reduction in friction. Has anybody measured the reduction in friction in units of horsepower? As if you put in rollers and used a camshaft with the same profile? Thanks
Tom: You’re right, but maybe it’s easier to think of it in terms of air. Engines are air pumps. The more air they can move, the more power. More air comes from valves that are open for longer. That more air gets combined with more fuel and that makes more power. I think friction of a roller vs. flat isn’t a measurable amount in terms of horsepower.
Sweet story i enjoyed it . i like the close up pics of the old hot rod parts .
Old guys and old parts rule. There is nothing cooler than a fuel injected 29 Hemi roadster with a Hilibrand quick change. I can already picture the finished rod in satin black. Larry better have more than one three speed layin’ round !
The suspension didn’t fail, it was pure driver (me) error. Went into turn one way too hot and slid it off into the very rough dirt. That’s what broke the suspension, which is a good thing since it took the abuse and didn’t bend the frame. It looks way worse than it actually is.
RK
Rob-
Thanks for clearing that up! I made a similar mistake on that track the day before in an attempt to get going as fast as possible…except I only ended spinning the Lotus 180 and all was good. I’m so glad to hear the coupe will be back to new soon – hope to see ya out on the track next year!

Wow, great write-up, Chris — Thanks alot!! I actually wasn’t sure if you were going to still do this article, since I sold it. Thanks for the kind comments. I just picked up a lowered ‘64 F100 as a driver, too.

Ratty,
That’s a cool PT Cruiser! From the post, I hope you would have seen that I don’t dislike PT’s in general. The PT in that photo is customized, unique and most importantly, not over done. I dig it!
that Datsun is way too cool……=]
Amazing… Great read, will be an amazing vehicle soon. Hobbyists with time are the best rebuilders!
Not to blow smoke at you but a very nicely done story and excellant pictures of a guy living the dream. From what you have written Larry has dedicated a chunk of his life living and supporting not only the sport as a whole but the people that live it as well.
Job well done, thank you for this site.
That was some cool video! I love the stockers!
[...] 1929 Roadster Part 1: A Long Time Coming [...]
Thought I was gonna have to correct you on the “little” brother thing. I always thought the Comets and Falcons were totally same, just looked different. I found this at BringaTrailer.com from user JH:
…did a little quick research and the 63 – 65 comet IS based on a falcon tub, but had extra inches added in the middle to give it a 4″ longer wheelbase and more interior room. this left the comet approx 2″ shorter in wheelbase than the same year fairlane, but with the ‘pointed’ quarters, almost the same overall length. now we know.

Dude, he’s got all his old racecars stacked on racecar shelves. COOL!!!
Great post! I’ve have seen a replica version of this machine. It’s simply stunning!
That thing is wild! Low, Long and Wide! Whatta Ride! Thanks Alan!
one of my favorite rides from Viva Las Vegas….great story Alan!!! Thanks!! =]
Swanee, that billowing smoke pic is so gnarly! Sorry it took so long to post it!
I am in love with the crank starter. I’m not a big fan of relying on batteries in general, and the pure badassery of that starter just makes the car. Two thumbs way up.
Interesting subject perhaps I can add something. The roller cam duration looks like it would be longer right, not really. Think of it this way – The roller cam time at max lift is almost entirely a function of the cam due to the extremely small contact area of the roller. While the flat cam time at max lift is controlled by the top of the cam within limits and the rest of the duration at top is controlled by the diameter of the lifter. The top of the flat cam has to wipe the entire diameter of the lifter before it starts down. The contact diameter of the flat lifter also affects, among other things, when the lifter starts to rise.
No doubt about it though, the roller setup is by far superior if for no other reason than the huge reduction in friction.
this is a tuff one…there all great
Joel is definitely the man to watch… Great striping skills, and a wealth of talent (both digital and analog)… He’s a true renaissance man, and an all-around great guy. Truly an honor to know him!
Nice ‘lines, Joel!
These are all crazy kool pictures buddy! I like the Galaxie the best!!! I gotta get you to photograph some of my striping one of these days!
Hey, glad you like! Pikesan will tell you, its all in the fancy digital camera…and he’s right. ah ha Yes, I want to shoot some of your striping! We need to hook up and do that!

This “meant-to-be-driven” rod was brought in on a flat bed to the Mooneyes X-mas Show last weekend. It may look menacing, but was super quiet when cruisin’ through the rain-soaked crowd.
Great Article and excellent website.

Excellent article
I love this car!!!
Why should I win? Because my Stang needs this, and I’m a nice guy, plus my website gets tons of traffic, so… “win-win” :)
This contest is CLOSED.
Thank you!
Cant say enuff about Joels work!
My father used to race Hornets back in the ’70’s for the factory team in late model dirt track racing. I have recently purchased a ‘72 Hornet and plan on restoring it to a vintage road racing car. It is a little bit of a struggle as this type of car is hard to get parts for and hard to get someone to work on developing it into a real race car. Getting a new 360 tricked out and put in it will be easy, the tough part is figuring out the suspension so that the car will handle well around the track. I currently have a Factory Five Cobra and it handles like a dream so I want to get that same kind of performance out of this Hornet.
Thanks for your comment Charlie! I want to see your new Hornet and your Cobra in your garage here at MyRideisMe.com!

Swanee might take great pics, but Pike, I dig your writing. My favorite pic is the left picture of the silver F100.
Nice pics..and oh..the Scout is real..cool!
A pretty cool experiment. I just posted this story over on Stanceworks forum here http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2986, where the people over there dig this car.
I also posted it on VWVortex forums here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4696470
These 2 groups of people are polar opposites, but both passionate about the types and styles of cars they own, build, like.
The car community has so much variety! I Love It!
What do you guys think?
Man the article’s great Chris. Can wait to show to my friends and family. Great job man, I will keep you update man.
These are way cooler than those coke-can whirleygigs ya find at craft fairs!

Can I buy “Ginger Bread MRIM Garage & Hot Rod” Kit”?
Mt grandaughter and I would have a Blast Building something like that together.
She and Her Dad already Built the Ginger Bread House from a Kit.
Now we need a MRIM Gararge & Car Kit to go with it.
Napster
Thanks Napster! Glad you liked it. Chris at Salt Flats Speed Shop has tons of potential. He’s still early in his career as a hot rod builder and has already done some amazing work! Just tryin’ to spread the word!
Great Personal Touch on this Article.
Jose’s passion and commitment really come through.
Love it, that’s quite the shifter assembly. Geez! I love these how-to videos, we need more of this.
if that Subaru belly tanker was all wheel drive…now that would be really sweet!
I wonder if the car I saw at Barret Jackson in Palm Beach Fl was the real one
it was displayed with new Chrysler cars inside about 3 0r 4 years ago
I am an old street racer from Connecticut / Berlin turnpike Newington McDonalds
In 1968 I was running a medium blue 1964 Plymouth Belvedere it had a 68 dodge charger engine 440 / 375 horse / hemi 4 speed box / 4:56 8/34 rear
racer brown cam / headwork / the big hooker adjustable headers / edelbrock intake and a 850 holley double pumper. It ran low 12’s with a hurst super shifter and linleock . It was a real sleeper. Would love to have that car back today. Those were the days I really enjoyed the story about the Silver Bullet.
People back in Ct had heard about its legend as the ruler of Woodward AVe.
Hey Tom, Thanks for the insight. It’s wild that a car owned by a regular guy could be become known enough to cross state lines. that’s legend! Got any pictures of your old Plymouth? Put those with a tale from the good old days and we’ve got another great story!
Probably my favorite pictures, those wheel stands the street. That’s hardcore performance and grip! So cool!
Thank you! This video helped me a lot, trying to rebuild the shifter for my Muncie, I’m glad I found this walkthrough. Nice work, I really appreciate the tips and tricks.
Cool video Luis and Kristin! Hard to see that Glitter vinyl headliner, I’ll have to check it out at Speedweek 2010, right? :)
Ah-Hecht-Yeah that thing is AWESOME!!!!!
I’m thinking Time Attack machine, are else we would of seen some drifting shots in that video….=]

Dude, we have to go to Japan and hunt for cars someday. Probably the last place on earth I feel like I really wanna go. :)
This is the wildest a coupe i’ve ever seen ….. it’s not Little mans is it ? . I’m building a coupe with a blown hemi at the moment . This car is totally wild . the engineeering is spectacular
Really an interesting article. My son & I are finishing up on a 2 year project of restoring a 1969 Firebird convertible that my wife & I actually bought brand new in 1969. In fact, we actually ordered the car from the factory. As we speak, the convertible top is being installed.
I have some photos @ right here
I have several years of upholstery experience. My dad and I had a shop together for a long time. I practically grew up in that shop. If anyone has any questions on doing their own stuff I would be glad to offer what help I can via e-mail or phone or whatever!

I went to the Beaudry show last week and had a great time. The wait in line was nothing. I gave my $5 entry with pleasure as it was for prostate cancer for a change, not breast cancer. It’s time the men get some concern, obviously I am a prostate cancer survivor.
The cars were laid out nicely, lots of them, good food, plenty of restrooms, the PA was fine as we could hear ourselves think, and we totally enjoyed the show.
It was nice to have a show in the south valley that was easily accessible. We also had plenty of parking.
From a spectator standpoint it was a great day.
Barry
This was my list of gripes I gave to my son and I know there were more of you there so drop a line to …my ride is me………..bob
We no longer pay to be the car show entertainment, except for Goodguys events. Why should we pay expose our vehicles to buffoons and their malicious little brats? Leave that for the car guys that still love to win $5 trophies! I’ll take the cruise night type events…no charge, no prizes, just good clean fun. Our ‘63 Dodge Polara convertible isn’t a show car, but it’s about in brand new condition and we drove it to Delmar CA to a Goodguys event because that’s what makes these cars fun to own! We have gathered some trophies, but I’ve even stopped manning the dust rag at these events because I’d rather be roaming around looking at the cars and talking to the owners. The southeast valley certainly has room for a substantial cruise night, but we need lots more car guys refusing to pay to be the entertainment!
Testify my Brother. Things could have gone a lot better. I saw them scrambleing and disorganized. But I will watch the show on TV to see what they put into it.
Rico
A few of you are looking at this from a complicated point of view. Laymans terms: we’re not talkling about max lift. Max lift is only achieved for a split second at the very top of the lobe. We’re talking about NEAR max lift and its duration. The roller is able to get us there much faster. Think of it like two people trying to slide wooden boxes up a hill. One has a dolly, and one is slidding his on asphalt. Which one makes it there first and who can go up a steeper hill? Because the roller makes it there much faster, and the time that the valve stays open is proportional to RPM (basically proportionally constant), the roller cam is able to keep the a larger opening longer, allowing more air and fuel into the cylinder. Technically, both cams keep the valve open the same amount of time if you look at it as it’s open unless the valve is seated. But in terms of horsepower, we don’t look at it that way. We want that opening as big as possible for as long as possible.
Great pinup shots.

Damn!! that FlatCat is awesome!!!!!
Awesome bubba!!! Can’t to see what else you bring to myrideisme!
Definitely drive my ride year round! :)
So awesome!!! Can’t wait to see the carnage!
I only wish it was really 24 hrs of racing…no breaks…but still should be a blast, cant wait!!!!
Why is that I’m picturing a “MyRideisMe” car entering next year???!
I lived in Japan a couple of times and visited this show, it was really great to see the interest and following of hot rod culture in Japan. We lived in Daikanyama – very cool part of Tokyo near to Shibuya, and the Moon Eyes shop was just down the street in Ebisu.
Tiger Motors was a small rod shop close to the American School in Japan, Chofu (just outside Tokyo)
I have up loaded a few photos to the Photo Bucket web site, these were taken in about 2003 (from memory).
Will see if I can dig out some more photos from other events.
GreaseGirl.. wouldn’t that be fun! The trip to the track will be research as much as media for MyRideisMe!! Gotta find out what kind of cars work at the track, then the hunt is ON! Too bad everyone thinks their 4-door Falcon’s (”not running, some rust”) are worth their weight in gold!

Looking forward to our first trip to Firebird! Remember, the spectator tickets are all-access to the paddock–even if you aren’t racing, you can witness the horror from front-row seats.
how do you draw these! I got to admit i’m not a bad artist myself, but this is way out of my limits. If i could draw like this i would so happy. First hotrod is the best!
Thanks for sharing those pics David! I love seeing car culture in other countries…tis both the same and different ;)
That Model A custom you’ posted is the same car I saw in the El Segundo Car Show this summer…http://www.myrideisme.com/Blog/top-ten-of-main-street-el-segundo-car-show/ …which was done in Japan and now lives in Carson, CA. It looks very similar to one of the customs in the videos…my bet is it’s the same maker.

Nice to see you guys featured with the streamliner. 200 mph next time. Sincerely David M
Buncha talented goons they got at them Gasoline shows.
The PT-57’s front tires weren’t big enough it turns out. The “new” wheels high centered on the calipers. Cross that with the fact that we built the car in 21 days and it really wasn’t in top condition for racing. But their going to let us race next year so look out.
-Russell
I love the Hot Rod Special. I didn’t think you could cross a ‘32 and a F-1 Racer and end up with something that looks that good.
Russell, let us know when you race again… The idea of a road racing Hot Rod is perfect! I wanna see how it does after working the bugs out.
I wanna see you there next time Rob! Your bomber panels are killer!
Awwww… thank you for the kind words about my bomber panels!
I’d love to get to Gasoline some year! But it’s a looooong way away from Florida, and I’m a starving artist, so… : )
Nice tips! I learned a lot. :) Cool post!
It is the Time Attack version.
How do I know? The FD Drifting series, doesn’t allow any modification to the firewall, and this RX8 clearly shows a huge “hole” in the firewall to accomodate the 26B.

Thanks for the offer Mike! I’m mentioning your offer in my next article…it’s always nice to have extra pals in the garage!
Looks to be a hoot, and this snowbird is flyin into town for the weekend anyway…hmmm wonder if a rental car with collision damage waiver would qualify?
Cool! Nice work Greaser! The before pic is pretty bad. Glad you redid those babies.

NICE ! ! !
Great Tips and Links.
It’s Great to get Reports on Shows from across the country.

Awesome job on this scout. I hope to see it in real life some day soon. Very sexy and well done!
Fantastic write up. Cobb is amazing and this article just shows what a class act they are. I would take any car pictured above and just treasure it forever. I love the modern engine swaps.
FYI: I just attended the LA premiere of the SpeedTV special all about this event…it’s SO good!!! Tune into Speed TV this Saturday at 8 or again Sunday at 1 (West-coast time)…you’ll have lots of fun…and there’s actually a *surprise* winner! My clue: the tally’s were wrong…you’ve gotta watch to find out!
Great stuff Craig, we need to get together and do a “How To” soon…
This poor (not monetarily) guy lost his A** at barrett-jackson this year but I can relate to him because I lost mine there in 06 when I sold my 2door there the roadster is what I would call “spot on” bad part is its going to moneybags Ron Pratt where it will sit in his private museum and only get seen by other moneybags who cant begin to relate to this car
Let’s do it! I think I have a few “How To’s” that would be useful….
I’ve just started taking pic’s of autos, belong to the Buick club in north Seattle.
Thanks for info, it was very helpful.
Love it! I dig that fisheye lens! Cool! Make sure to shoot with other lenses! ;) Can’t wait for swanee’s pics!
You guys are awesome! I couldn’t believe I was getting to see pre-season interviews and testing. It was great. I am a Force race team junky. I hope they take it all, 1st – 4th. I am a old man probably as old as John. I have been going through cabin fever waiting on something from NHRA. This was good. thanks .
Wow. This is fabulous on many levels. Well written, clear, and a fun read. As to the paiting itself, I would have been tempted to include the front tire, but the effect of having it edge out that corner is to suggest that it’s going someplace. And fast.
Love the chance to see you in action like this. Thanks!
This is one of the best how to articles I have come across. I’ll be putting some of these tricks to the test at the Detroit Autorama.
Hello, thanks for putting this video out on assembly of a hurst shifter. It will definetly go
better. It`s for a 65 lemans.
Joel
The grille looks cool. I’m not a fan of chrome wheels, so chrome rotors doesn’t spin my twincams either. ;) I’d like to see more pics of it, looks like it has some cool body mods, but I’m with you, I’d rather see a ‘33 roadster with 100k miles and stickers on it from all the places its been driven!
I have been watching these tiny little inline 6 , v8 ,v12 for a while . Now can I order one of these and dose they come in a larger size and if so can someone send a catalogue to P.O.Box 970 , Richmond Tx. 77406
Would like to build one if possible .
Ahhh… good times, man! Thanks for one hell of a weekend… It was a blast gathering stories and coverage with you, Swanee and Grease Girl!
Can’t wait to get some of these stories up… pure gold!
I guess I really don’t get the whole awards thing. Build-it, drive-it, re-build it.
I was really hoping for a fish eye lens shot here…
Anyway… In my opinion (yes, OPINION… like it, hate it, whatever, it’s my opinion. Voice yours, too!), it was a success in that, as a purpose-built car, it delivered the trophy. As a styling exercise, it’s certainly not for everyone. There is a level of finish and polish at work here that is obviously second to none… Yet, it’s built to win an award, and that seems to require some kind of agenda in today’s show car world, which this car nails as it follows the same plan as the winner two years prior… and it’s obviously working. There has already been some outcry on other sites about the car, including many unprovoked jabs at the shop which created the car… none of which serves any purpose. Granted, we live in the age of excess, and it’s plainly seen on any car show floor.
But what’s the alternative?
A cookie-cutter traditional car? Something even more plotted to chase trophies? Somewhere, in between this car, the Miller Hauler displayed across the aisle from it, and something like Todd Stevens’ orange monster just across the aisle from that, the truth lies. A car with simplicity, supreme attention to detail, historical reverence and a unique translation of all of these would hold the key to an AMBR-winner that gets it all back on track… A car that shows some soul in its design, and just moves onlookers beyond “wow, that looks expensive”! Again, that’s just me.
Congrats to the winning team on some amazing dedication and hard work, and sincere wishes for your continued success.
I was plugging for Goldenrod! At first I thought there was too much chrome between the rims and the entire engine/engine compartment being chromed…but then I decided it was such a great contrast with the gold paint. I don’t think I’d actually want to drive any of em though!
P.S…Goldenrod didn’t take any, but the orange Magnuson/Foose took 3 of 7 minor AMBR awards…for best Undercarriage, Best Interior, and Best Detail. While Mayer’s silver ‘32 took 2 of 7 awards for Best Engineering and Best Paint.
Your photographs are great !! reminds me , that I should have made the trip.
My vote is the orange injected Hemi roadster. Cruisin’ that thing would be tops! Nice pics too!
Cool stuff. Can’t wait for your feature stories! Man I wish I was there, but this is helping me feel like I was. Looks like an amazing show!
How much for the girl? :-)
[...] names in the auto industry. Along with about a dozen unbelievable cars competing for the coveted “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” Award, there is also hundreds of other top-notch [...]
This stuff is what I live for, keep up the great work, Tom
I must say that your comments about “Possessed” are dead on. The evolution of the AMBR award has been going in a “throw enough money at it and it’ll win” direction for a few years now. Not to say that other, more traditional contenders aren’t high-dollar cars. I just have more admiration for a builder that sticks to a (near) stock wheelbase rod, and a stock-based body. If you look back at the history of the AMBR award there has always been the swing of the pendulum from the radical (the “Invader in 1967 for example) to the traditional (Ermie Immerso’s Ardun V-8 Deuce in 1988). It will swing back to the traditional once again, as long as there are people like Scott Stevens building and competing with cars such as his. Based simply on the number of photos I took of his car, for me it was the star of the show.
Thanks J.R. we appreciate your comment. Everyone’s got a favorite and I’m with you hoping the pendulum swings back at least a little. Which car is Scott Stevens? Can you write a story about it for us? (with your pictures)
To say that ANY show winning car is controversial to someone is kind of like saying that when you wake up in the morning there is a good chance the sun is going to come up. Pending some act of God, the chances are you’re pretty much stating the obvious.
J.R. is right on in saying the pendulum is swinging where it is, and that it will soon change; but what won’t change is what the judges will be looking for. Ingenuity, engineering, detail, theme carried through, fit and finish, etc…At the end of the day, that’s what is going to win car shows.
It saddens me that there are only the worst of the worst when it comes to photos of this car that have popped up online. Go back a page and on this site you will see 3 photos of the other contenders….yet only one bad angled shot of the winner. Seems kind of biased if you ask me, but what do I know?
So chrome rotors, chrome wheels, and side vent’s don’t float your boat? Well they floated the customers boat which is why it has them. remember, this car was built to compete specifically for this show, but at the end of the day, it’s still the customers car and we give him what he wants. We have a set of rotors for the car that aren’t chrome, but the customer didn’t like them once they were on…so off they went.
And no, this isn’t a case of whomever writes the biggest check wins. I guarantee you (yes GUARANTEE) that this car has nearly HALF into it what all the other cars did. And politics? LOL, yeah right. you couldn’t find a more NON political man such as Justin, the owner of Scott’s. I mean, who’s more in the scene than Chip Foose? and he didn’t win right? so obviously there were no politics at play.
Bottom line, we built a points car and we are VERY proud of it. Thanks to those supporters, and if anyone get’s to see the car in person with an open mind, I bet you’ll enjoy it.
Jeph
As a designer and student of art I maintain that all of these cars are just like a piece of fine art, regardless of investment. It really isn’t whether or not you like it, it’s whether or not it produces an emotion. You can love it or hate it, just don’t ignore it. If an artist (and these builders are all artists) fails to get your attention, for good reasons or for bad, he has failed. The fact that we are in discussion at all about the rods in question makes every one of these vehicles successful exercises in the art of hot rod building.
The car I mentioned before belongs to TODD Stevens, and is featured elsewhere in this blog.
Thanks for your comment Jeph, some very good points. It would be fair to list, “Satisfied their customer” as one of the things Scott’s did right on this build. As an employee (based on your email address) you’d know that fact better than me.
To your comment of “bad angled shot” I explained what happened in the story. I had a feeling your car would win.
Just like in 2008 when you had the wild roulette display, you had, by far, the best display for the theme. That’s one place the other builders are missing out big time. So we tried to get photos! We were there Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the morning when there weren’t many people around, but during those times, you guys were inside the display. (Want to see the video?) If you look VERY closely at this one picture in this story, you’ll see a guy’s hat above the hood. That’s in the display! Other got good pics, so shame on me, but you should clearly know why.
There was no bias, even though the chrome rotors and styling weren’t my bag. I agree, who cares as long as the customer’s happy. I also shot your 2008 AMBR winner Chrome rotors and all, I got a bunch of pics of that car.
To show my sincerity, send me some great pictures of Possessed and I’ll post them right here with credit to the photographer. I’ll also approve any comments from anyone who loved this car, especially the owner.
ZOMG!! I am famous!!
The Magnasun car far out points the scotts car. way more photogentic. I always thought they gave more points for fenders, tops and all handmade trim. But who are we but the viewing public trying to figure out how a handful of old judges have better tastes than the average hot rodder. they are both very nice cars end the end!!
I would of loved to have a chance to get better shots and angles of the car but as Pikesan mentioned Scott’s crew never gave us photographers the time of day when nobody was around to get any decent shots. There were other car’s that also had the same fate as this one did when it came to get any decent shots without someone in the way during the media preview hour. When I took this shot there were two guy’s up on the display and this was the only angle I could get without them in it. And I’m positive other photographers had the same fate as I did when it came to getting any clean shots of the car. This is a big show with lots of other cars to shoot, I’m not going to stand around one car waiting for fate from above to bless me with a golden shot or three. By all means I wasn’t trying to be bias, I was just lucky enough to get just one shot without the Scott’s crew or crowd in the shot.
What saddens me is that I couldn’t do this car justice with getting more than one shot of it. I don’t know about you, but I like to have my photo’s clean and focused on the subject without a bunch of people standing around it. Our only request to the show producers is to have a time when nobody is around including the builders so we can have a chance to do these car’s somewhat of a justice.
I understand that Murphy was high on Scott’s Hot Rods tail and they had to do what they had to do to bring home the trophy and kick Murphy’s law to the curb. There were some big contenders at the show and Scott’s crew proved once again that they know how to bring home the grand daddy of them all.
As JR brilliantly pointed out, the pendulum does tend to swing between the extremes, and considering Ermie Immerso’s winners (yes, winner plural) of the AMBR trophy were both great examples of this… His Golden Star was an example of what I had mentioned above, a little traditional, a little over-the-top detail, and all winner. And ironically, that car won during the midst of the great pendulum swing. Brilliant.
Jeph, thanks for backing up my opinion that the car is a purpose-built points car. Outstanding dedication and detail are what made the car a winner, and you guys nailed that, hands-down. I’m impressed at the themed-to-match-the-show displays each year, and thanks for “getting” the show thing… It really brings back the magic of attending a show back in the old days.
Again, the car may not be everyone’s taste, but I’d bet that “everyone” didn’t show up to write the checks that built this car, and at the end of the day, all that matters is that the owner is happy (and should be!), and that all involved have created a piece of art that has been recognized as such.
It’s always been some political BS that ruins a good time, and hearing that the car “showed up late”, etc etc irks me to no end. There was some obvious magic in the logistics in getting the display up and the car displayed through all that went wrong, and that demands HUGE respect…. Then, to pull all-nighters, set up, AND be at the show all weekend…. damn, guys. You deserve praise on the oft-forgotten human side of this hobby/industry.
Thanks for thinking outside of the box, major respect for what you accomplished, and a HUGE tip of the hat for a classy handling of some undue negativity regarding this car and all who worked on it, namely on some other websites. Again, the car isn’t something everyone might build, but I’m willing to guarantee that my dream cars are not at all the taste of Mike and Dianne Dingman, and that, my friends is what this is all about: Artistic and personal expression through custom cars… and how cool is that?
Great commentary here… thanks for the insightful conversation, and again, continued best wishes on your future success!
If you don’t drive it into the show and out at the end, it’s not a car it’s a decoration, it’s garage art, it’s a display. If any one of these cars drove in or drove out, I vote for them. Shouldn’t be the AMBR award, It should be the best sculpture representing a classic american auto award.
Was my first trip to the GNRS. Made the trip from Calgary,Alberta,Canada. Talk about sensory overload. My personal pick would have been the Magnuson/Foose car but they were all top notch cars.
Dallas that’s why the orange one is on top, because it was built to be driven and it’s one top notch roadster………=]
There sure is a lot of controversay over “Posessed” and after reading what everyone has said so far about it, I had to voice my opinion.
I don’t think the public knows all that took place at the show. Rules are rules, and if you read the official rule book ( I suggest you request a copy). The rules state “All contenders must be out of their displays by noon on Friday”. It also states “Judges decisions are FINAL” We all know that Scott’s crew was in their display well after noon on Friday. So why were the rules bent for them? Politics involved??? I THINK SO! As far as someone saying Craig not having good shots of the car on here?? I think he has some of the best photos on the web compared to all the other car sites. He couldn’t get a lot of photos of “Possessed” because there were constantly people in the display! Broken rules for sure!
I know some of the judges, and talked to them briefly. (They were very busy) It was well known that “Posessed” was disqualified. By Sunday, Posessed was back in, and to top it off won the award. As mentioned before, the crew in the display, and beads covering oil leaks didnt deter the judges decision. Maybe all you have to do is threaten the owner of the show with a law suit, and you are back in?
I am not sure that the title “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” is the correct wording anymore. I often talk to the well known builders, and one had a great idea. Why not do AMBR like Pebble Beach? All the contenders in one hall, no displays, and on the same carpet. All doors, hood, and deck are closed. How a car should be. All judges walk to each car and with the contender present, they present the car to the judges by going over the whole car. Show them the quality by opening doors, hood, etc. and talk to them about all the modifications done to the car. The overall appearance of the car closed and sitting on the ground. Not grabbing points by having “chrome rotors” and “stupid trinketts” all over the car.
It seems to me that this show is nothing more than an I.S.C.A show or World of Wheels show anymore. The integrity of the AMBR award is tarnished. It is also my opinipn that Chip should of received this award. His build is much more appealing! (You may start trashing my comments now!)
Joe
My favorite for the AMBR was a classic ‘32 done in a beautiful paint color called “Black Apple” – sorry, I don’t remember the name of the car or the builder. At first look the color appeared to be a classic roadster black, but the more you looked at it you noticed it was actually a deeeeeep extremely dark red accented by very tasteful gold leaf striping.
Beautiful interior and exterior detailing, and the Hemi power was a work of art.
Thanks for posting these pics. Got more of the rest of the field?
We’re still sorting through the rest of the pictures. Sign up to MyRideisMe.com and nudge swanee3 to get a move on!
Great cars- I raced Beetle in the mid 60’s and would love any of these :)
Totally works for me! Love that last shot!
Thanks for the great plug for the Museum! Our upcoming exhibits will include Muscle Car Mania from April 23 – September 6, 2010 and Woodie Wagons from September 24 – January 31, 2011.
Hi Craig! Nice shots! We have that first Caddy by Rick Dore in our showroom at the moemnt. Really, Really nice! It’s now a 2 seater roadster…..and the top is removable…just the front half or the complete top…..coool
Joe,
It would appear as though you would like people to start trashing your post. I’m not sure what you feel you have to gain by presenting information here that is not factual and far beyond your opinon for which you are entitled.
My car has certainly generated a lot of emotion both positive and negative and for that I am grateful. On one side there are a great deal of people who like the car or don’t necessarilly like the design but appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that went into building the car. On the other side there are those who don’t like the car and the over the top haters who have made it a mission to get their point across.
As I qouted to the HAMB’ers. ” I have not seen this many people throw up since the swine flu pandemic nor so many people scared by a display since a good “B” horror movie” but no matter what the ailment the car generated a reaction.
Your opinion is certainly well understood and accepted. I built this car for my personal satisfaction and to compete for the AMBR. It was built by many great individuals and companies none of whom deserve to be trashed by inuendos and false accusations on your part.
First. The rules do state the car must be on display and complete by noon. You are correct. The car was signed off prior to noon and we were given permission to clean the car by an authorized representative for a period of time which we met. The person giving the permission nor myself knew the actual rule at the time. The judges were aware of these instructions.
After the car was judged including points lost for a differential leak the car was disqualified. The disqualification was accepted and there were no threats of any nature. Actually, I don’t recall you being in the room at the time. Fortunately, the owners of the show, the judges and the other competitors felt otherwise after reviewing the matter and in fact having to disqualify other contenders for working on and cleaning their cars after the noon deadline including your choice of winners.
At the end of the day, all involved felt that this show was about the vehicles and presenting the best competition. The owners of the cars and additional outsiders were consulted and everyone agreed who should compete. I was then called back into another meeting, again I don’t think you were there, and told the decision.
Hopefully this clears things up a bit, maybe not to your satisfaction, but acurately.
There may controversy associated with this car for some time created by people such as yourself but there are also those that will enjoy the car for what it is or intended to be.
Again, I appreciate all of the comments I have read on this board and all over the internet and appreciate both perspectives on the car. I respect very much that every individual is entitled to their opinion.
I am personally elated with the win as this was a dream for me and I am extremely happy for those involved in the build. We set out to compete for this title under the guidelines set for this judging and we did well.
Mike
In case you didn’t notice, the comment above is from Mike Dingman, the owner of “Possessed” and the 2010 AMBR trophy, like it or not.
Mike, I appreciate your comment (and any others). If anyone’s wondering why their comments don’t show up right away, you can blame that on rampant spamming in blogs. Once you’re an approved commenter, you comments appear right away.
