HIGHT WINS WINTERNATIONALS FOR THIRD TIME

POMONA — Robert Hight had to endure a long cold winter. Beginning with his last round win in Brainerd at the Lucas Oil Nationals in August the 41-year old former crewman’s season ground to a halt when over the next seven races Hight posted a 0-6 record with an October DNQ in Las Vegas.

Those struggles and tribulations lasted for an extra few weeks as the NHRA started its 60th anniversary season two weeks later than usual opening the season this weekend at the 51st NHRA Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals.

That is all past history as Hight drove his Auto Club Ford Mustang to the winner’s circle for the third time to open the season today. Hight defeated a “Who’s Who” of tough competitors. In the first round he dispatched fellow Ford racer Bob Tasca III and then he out-distanced boss and 15-time funny car champion John Force. In the semi-finals Hight had to outrun Don Schumacher Racing veteran Ron Capps before besting DSR’s young star Matt Hagan in the final. In the final Hight used a reaction time advantage to beat Hagan on a hole shot. The win was reminiscent of Force’s 2010 Winternationals hole shot win over Capps.

“The biggest deal for me is how long it has been since we have won even a round. It goes clear back to Brainerd last year,” said Hight, a 19-time NHRA national event winner.

“The only thing that made (last year) good was John winning everything and Ashley (Force Hood) winning the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. We stayed together as a team. What is really important to me is this is the fourth year in a row that my team has been together, 100% of them. That makes it so easy to get out here and do what you know how to do. You don’t have to train new people and everyone knows how to do their job. It makes it that much more special when you win because you pulled together and you stayed together. I was on John’s teams a lot of years and we had the same nucleus of guys. You become a family. They are like brothers to you and that is what makes these times so special. To win the Winternationals to start the year it has been a long winter. To win at Auto Club Raceway is just awesome.”

This was Hight’s third win at the Winternationals (2006 and 2008) and it was John Force Racing’s 8th win in eleven events at Auto Club Raceway. Last year John Force won both events in Pomona and Mike Neff closed out the 2009 NHRA season with a win here.

Hight will leave his home track with the points lead and for the seventh year in a row Hight has had the points lead at some point in the season. No other driver has ever led the points at least once for every year of their career. He is now tied with legendary driver Don “Snake” Prudhomme for second most career times holding the Funny Car points lead. John Force is the all-time leader with eighteen seasons as points leader.

Mike Neff shook the rust off after a one year break from racing to come within a few hundredths of a second from facing Hight in the final. In the semis Neff dropped a tight race to Hagan. Neff’s Castrol GTX Ford Mustang was actually quicker on the track but a slight starting line advantage gave Hagan the win. Neff was pleased with his team’s overall performance and tough on himself.

He battled clutch gremlins throughout the day and thought he had the problem cured before the semi-final race.

“For whatever reason when we tested in Florida everything went smooth and in qualifying here everything went well. Then the first run today it wore an excess of clutch. It put a cylinder out in the first round. I thought that was kind of a fluke deal. I didn’t do a lot about it,” said the two-time funny car champion crew chief.

“It got even worse the second round. It murdered the clutch on that run. This last run I had to make some big moves to make the clutch wear I got it a lot better. It was still not anywhere close to where I wanted. It was one of those deals that it was good for a while then things change once and a while”.

“I am just kind of disappointed in myself. For whatever reason I was just dead late right there. The bummer is all through testing and qualifying I was cutting good lights. That is the worst light I have had all year. I have been out of the car for a year. Doing it in qualifying or testing is one thing but race day is what counts. I don’t have any excuses. I was just dead late.”

Team leader John Force did not accept Neff’s tough self assessment.

“(Neff) did his job for Castrol. That is what matters to me. Everyone is watching to see if we are going to fall apart this weekend,” said Force a 132-time winner. “We all stayed in the game. That is what is most important. (Neff’s) got overload as crew chief and driver but he did both your jobs well. That is all we expect. We’ll take good and then we’ll turn that into great.”

The three John Force Racing Mustangs will head to Gainesville in first, third, and fifth place in the Full Throttle points standings.

Trade Nitro for Newborn – Ashley Force Hood’s Taking a Break

NHRA Drag Racing’s John Force Racing Team News

WITH FAMILY AT THE FOREFRONT, ASHLEY TAKES HIATUS FROM RACING

john force racing, nhra funny car, funny car racing, ashley forceYORBA LINDA, CA (January 25, 2011) – Two-time reigning Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Champion Ashley Force Hood, a top three finisher in the NHRA Full Throttle driver standings each of the last two seasons, announced Tuesday that she and husband Dan are expecting their first child.

Moments after informing members of her Castrol GTX team of the news via satellite hook-up with John Force Racing East in Brownsburg, Ind., Force Hood told those assembled for a press conference at JFR corporate headquarters that she will take a temporary hiatus and will not compete this year for the Full Throttle Championship.

The 28-year-old graduate of Cal State-Fullerton instead will focus on motherhood and her new responsibilities as president of John Force Entertainment, a JFR subsidiary that has been charged with responsibility for building the JFR brand on a variety of new and existing platforms.

The NHRA national record holder for Funny Car speed (316.38 miles per hour), Force Hood admitted that she is excited about both her pregnancy and about finally being able to make use of the college degree she earned in Radio, TV and Film.

“This past November, after watching my dad clinch his 15th championship, Dan and I decided we would try to start a family,” said the 2007 NHRA Rookie of the Year. “We knew it was unlikely to happen in such a short amount of time and, if it didn’t, I could still race the 2011 season and we’d try again next winter.

“We felt that if God wanted it to happen, it would happen.  Well, God didn’t waste any time and I am pregnant and due at the end of the summer.  Dan and I know there is always a risk at the beginning of a pregnancy so we waited as long as possible to say anything to make sure everything was all right and there were no problems,” she said.

“I will be taking off this season, but I will still represent Castrol, Ford, Auto Club, BrandSource and Mac Tools; will still be involved in media, commercials and interviews; and will definitely still be rooting on my teammates to go after that 2011 Championship.”

Force Hood also will spend time coaching youngest sister Courtney, who this year will be testing a BrandSource Ford Funny Car in anticipation of a later pro debut.

“I am excited to help my sister Courtney as she begins testing in fuel Funny Car,” Ashley said, “and I am very interested in seeing how she deals with dad!  Handling 8,000 horsepower will be the easy part.”

Drag Racing Legend Tribute: Don The Snake Prudhomme

October 14, 2010 by pikesan · 3 Comments

Drag Racing Legends

Maybe before cats and dogs started their bitter rivalry, there was Snake vs Mongoose. I’m not talking about Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, I mean two of the best known drag racers ever to lay it all on the starting line: Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen. Back before corporate sponsorship made some racers professionals, drag racers were innovators and possibly daredevils who no doubt, did it for love and a heaping dose of quarter mile glory. Why else would Snake and Mongoose travel the country for “grudge matches” that paid not much more than gas and beer money? It wasn’t until McEwen convinced Mattel (the first non-automotive drag racing sponsor) that “Wildlife Racing” and this “bitter” rivalry (actually between friends) would sell scores of Hot Wheels that drag racing became both lucrative and a common household discussion.

Snake, Don Prudhomme, Barracuda, funny carMongoose, vintage, funny car

But that’s just part of the story!  Head down to the Peterson Automotive Museum for their NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder where Don “The Snake” Prudhomme will be joined by Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, Roland Leong (Hawaiian funny car fame), “TV” Tommy Ivo (Actor and racer of some nasty multi-engined hot rods), Carroll Shelby (needs no intro!) and Ed Pink (engine builder for Snake and just about every winning racer back then). A once in a lifetime experience for $150 on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010.

Petersen Museum, Event,Snake, Mongoose

(LOS ANGELES, October 1, 2010) Petersen Automotive Museum is celebrating the opening of the exciting new exhibit, NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder by paying tribute to one of the sport’s most iconic figures – Don “The Snake” Prudhomme – during their annual Tribute Night on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010.

Match Race Madness Panel Discussion

The day will begin with the 2 p.m. panel discussion, Match Race Madness, featuring drag racing’s greatest rivalry: Snake vs. Mongoose. Prudhomme will be joined by arch-rival Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen to tell the tales of their days of traveling the United States from race track to race track, their much-publicized grudge matches, the business partnership they formed called, “Wildlife Racing,” and their pioneering work in non-automotive sponsorship with Mattel’s Hot Wheels.

An Evening with Don “The Snake” Prudhomme

At 5:30 p.m., An Evening with Don “The Snake” Prudhomme will begin. A cocktail hour with Prudhomme, McEwen, and honored guests Roland Leong, Tommy Ivo, Carroll Shelby, Ed Pink and many others will be followed by a fabulous dinner buffet. Special guest Dave McClelland, the Voice of the NHRA and longtime friend of Don Prudhomme, will be the Master of Ceremonies. The evening will continue with a short film featuring The Snake’s history and several other drag racing icons will share their stories of the legend. A live auction of amazing racing memorabilia will follow with proceeds going to the Petersen’s educational programs. Guests will also be able to preview the items that will be in the Bonham’s and Butterfield’s Motorcycles and Memorabilia auction on Saturday, Nov. 13.

NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder

If that’s not enough, guests will also be the first to see Petersen Automotive Museum’s newest exhibit, NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder. This exciting new exhibit will cover the history of the National Hot Rod Association, from its early creation as a way to get street racing off of the public highways and on to sanctioned drag strips, through six decades of nitro, tire smoke and thunder. Guests will have an experience rich with historic photography, exciting videos, interactive displays and of course, race cars with the combined power output of 50,000 horses! This exhibit opens at the gala and runs through May 29, 2011.

Tickets

Event proceeds support the Petersen Automotive Museum’s educational and cultural mission.

Honoree: Don “The Snake” Prudhomme

In the early days of his drag racing career, Don Prudhomme worked as a crew member for drag racing icon “T.V.” Tommy Ivo. In 1962, Prudhomme achieved his first Top Fuel win at the Smoker’s March Meet in Bakersfield, California. From 1962 through 1964, Don teamed up with Tom Greer and legendary engine builder Keith Black, and built the famous Greer, Black & Prudhomme Top Fueler (on display in NHRA: 60 Years of Thunder) which won nearly every west coast event. Prudhomme went on to drive Roland Leong’s “Hawaiian” Top Fuel dragster, and won his first NHRA race, the 1965 Winternationals in Pomona, California. He then switched to Funny Cars in the 1970s and won four straight NHRA Funny Car World Championships between 1975 and 1978 and had seven NHRA U.S. Nationals wins. He was the first Funny Car driver to go 5 seconds in the quarter mile and the first to top 250 mph.

Don Prudhomme’s quick reaction times earned him the nickname, “The Snake.” He teamed up with his friend and rival, Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen to form the team “Wildlife Racing,” and they were hired by track owners to race each other in grudge matches around the country. But the real money came when they were sponsored by Mattel’s “Hot Wheels,” the first non-automotive sponsor in NHRA history.

The Snake last raced on his “Final Strike Tour” in 1994, but stayed active in other areas of the sport. Until his retirement earlier this year, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme was a car owner running a Top Fuel Dragster Team and two Funny Car teams. Prudhomme has 49 career wins as a driver, and 59 career wins as an owner.

National Hot Rod Association

Nestled in the quiet community of Glendora, Calif., just minutes east of downtown Los Angeles, is the world’s largest and loudest auto racing organization, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Since it was founded by Wally Parks in 1951, NHRA has been dedicated to safety while providing millions of racing fans with The Extreme Motorsport: the fastest and most spectacular form of entertainment on wheels.
With 80,000 members and more than 35,000 licensed competitors, NHRA is a thriving leader in the world of motorsports. Parks initially started NHRA as a means of getting hot rodders off the streets and on to legal drag strips. Since those early days, NHRA has evolved into the largest promoter of professional drag racing in the world. Today, with more than 300 dedicated employees, NHRA offers drag racing opportunities for hot rod enthusiasts of all levels, from kids ages 8-17 in the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League all the way up to the top of the Professional ranks with the organization’s NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

NHRA is moving just as fast in popularity with auto racing fans. Second to only NASCAR in terms of attendance, fan appeal, and sponsorship commitment, NHRA is moving quickly into mainstream America.

NHRA is all about diversity. With more than 20 categories of competition, including Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle at the Professional level, to a multicultural array of high-octane personalities it calls world champions; NHRA thrives on unique competitors accomplishing unique achievements. For example, in 2008, Hispanic racer Cruz Pedregon won the NHRA Funny Car world championship, and Ashley Force Hood and Melanie Troxel became the first female winners in the Funny Car class.

Participation on and off the track has made the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series one of the most popular forms of racing, reaching thousands of fans, members, and sponsors a quarter-mile at a time.

“Hot Rod Ramblings”: The “Calera Kids” and the “Pit”

May 4, 2010 by Hechtspeed · 5 Comments

It’s been too long since I’ve posted a “Hot Rod Ramblings” feature.  For this post, I’m gonna go Nostalgia Drag and Funny Cars on you guys.  But, these “hot rod ramblings” come from my Uncle, “RickyRod” Hechtspeed.  These are my Uncle’s memories of the “Pit” from the late 60′s.  The “Pit” was the nickname for the first Irwindale Dragstrip.

A quick background… the “Calera Kids” were my dad (Rodger ”Calera Ave burnout king” and Ford/Merc’ lover and his little bro, the ”Chevy Puke” (as my dad would call him) and their buddies Rick Patterson, Scott Henry, John DeGraff (sporto), Lalo Gabriel, Rob Shultz, Pat Murphy and a few kids not directly in the “hood” Scott Taylor and Steve Presley were drag fans.  They lived on Calera Avenue in Azusa, California, the next city over from Irwindale.

Anyway, these ramblings are taken from some emails from my Uncle.  They mean a lot to me, because it is a piece of the Hechtspeed history.  I thought you guys would really dig ‘em too, so here goes, let the Ramblings begin!

Gay Pontiac Tyree Headers Tiger Arnie Beswick at Irwindale Dragstrip

“It is possible that the four kids shrouded by the supercharger are the “Calera Kids”.  That was one of our favorite spots.  What do you think Rodger, could that be us?”

Keatons Komet at Fontana Drag City

Okay, one last Comet.  This guy we all liked.  Sooo, it is not a Vomit Comit. Dee was a great racer who let us “Kids” help unload the car, wax the body, clean the tires and what not.  A few of us even got to climb in and sit in the beast.  He didn’t win much, but I remember one night he kicked butt and took names (must have upped the nitro % and prayed to the Piston Rod and Crank Gods because it held together).  The car was a “hand-me-down” from Pete Gates but Dee made it his own with an awesome Red, White and Blue pearl paint job. Dee Keaton with the Keaton’s Komet !  He campained a Cougar “Keaton’s Kougar” in 68 and then faded away, but not in our memories.  He was a cool dude as compared to guys like “Big John” Masmanian who would yell at us for even going near his car.  A game we played when bored was to see who could put a finger print on the “Big’s” Cuda. Notice the aluminum body dents in the fender, identifying this car as one of the original FoMoCo sponsored Comets (fiberglass does not bend).

Fast Eddie Schartman's Mercury Comet funny car

“The MAN !  “Fast Eddie”, this car was unbeatable in 1967.  If he showed up at any East Coast vs. West Coast funny car meet, then us Chevy lovers could pack up and just go home!  I remember the rubber marks this car would lay down on the track. Check out this smokin’ tire wheelie!”

Charlie Allen's open door burnout Dart Funny Car at Irwindale Dragstrip

“Third picture is Irwindale.  Your dad and I where most likely in the stands watchin Charlie do one of his trademark “open door” burnouts.  Cleared the smoke out of the car, and he would look out the side of the door to line up on the rubber he just laid down!”

Flying Dutchman Dart Funny Car at Irwindale Dragstrip

“Okay, so the story goes in drag racing history that an east coast funny car named the “Chi-Town Hustler” started the super smokey burn-out with his 69 Dodge Charger.  Well, your dad and I could tell you that’s bull crap !  Our very own Al Vanderwoulde in his “Flying Dutchman” would lay down some very awesome rubber witness this photo.  That was 1967, two years before the Chi Town Hustler.  This Dart funny was later sold and ran as the Quarter Bender and was a regular at the pit for about three seasons.”

Tornado Dragster crash at Irwindale Dragstrip

“Okay.  This one is for you bro.  I remember this crash !  We where there, right at the starting line on the pit side.  The car pulled hard right, Big John cranked the wheel left, then over corrected back right and went straight into the guardrail.  The car had a huge steering wheel with a “broody knob” like a trucker would use, and he was really crankin’ on that thing.  This car never could go straight, he would hit the throttle only for seconds at a time, never made a full pass.  Looking back I wonder if the driver was just so frustrated with the car he just went for it, because on this pass he did not let up!”

Ruby red Don Gay Pontiac Drag car at Irwindale dragstrip

“This one is for Ben.  Plexigless was ragin’, this is the very first funny car I saw coming through the admission gates, I saw this car with it’s metal flake ruby red paint, red plastic windows and gold leaf lettering pulling another 150 – 160 mph pass.  It was then I knew the “PIT” was IT ! Those where the days my friend…”

Max Curtis Long nose Mustang Funny Car at Irwindale

“Here is another of Rodger’s famous ford cammers.  This is the Max Curtis 66 long nose mustang.  The cammers where getting the job done at the “Pit” in 66-67 until the Ed Pink and Donavan aluminum head hemis started showing up.  There were a few strong Big Block Chevys to come along but the next few days we will see the Ford’s that ruled (for a time).”

Gas Ronda Cammer powered Mustang Funny Car at Irwindale

“This is the car that exploded a motor and hurt the GAS pretty badly.  Like Rodger said the cammers didn’t do so good on blowers.  Notice the air duct to push the cars nose down at speed from the front grill area up through the hood.  That is the kind of innovation you could count on from Gas.”

Pictures were found on the Speed City Resin website, a site dedicated to making Vintage Drag Racing Models and Parts.

Anybody remember the “Pit” in the late 60′s?  If so, let us know in a comment below.  Maybe one of the old “Calera Kids” is reading this?  Maybe you heard my dad’s ’64 Comet Cyclone with 4.56 gears, open headers and high revving 289ci cruising the streets of San Gabriel Valley or the drag runs on the 210 freeway?
