1955 Chevy Gasser spotted at Lowes Parking Lot

March 1, 2010 by Hechtspeed · 2 Comments

So, February in Utah isn’t a great time to bust out the street driven Gasser, you’d think, but the owner of this ‘55 Gasser called “Hemi Hunter” gets a big high 5 for doing just that.  Of course, it is the warmest day since November 22, it was a balmy 46.  Ha ha  I’ve got no info except for the pics I took.  But its a gorgeous example of an early 60’s Gasser built to run on the street.

1955 Chevy Gasser runs a 502ci big block was spotted at Lowe's

This car was immaculate!  Cherry black paint, all the correct Gasser mods, like radiused rear fender, bumperless, big long tube headers, no front fender wells to block the headers and straight front axle.  Those keystone mags set the car off nicely as well.  Rad!!!

Barnes & Sperry '55 Gasser runs a unique '65 Vette hood scoop

“Hemi Hunter” is right, that’s what a 502ci big block will get ya.

'55 Gasser named "Hemi Hunter" uses a 502ci big block

Love the gold lettering.  Period correct and Rad!

502ci Gasser power plant looking through the fender well

Super clean, that’s the word that comes to mind.  I dig the scoop sittin’ under the vette hood bulge.

Street worthy 1955 Gasser

That paint is reflecting everything.  Wow!  Dig that vette hood bulge/scoop and big street meats in the rear!

Super sano Gasser interior is immaculate

I dig the white steering wheel and white accents.  That interior is so clean!  There’s that word again, CLEAN.

…and one more pic for your hot rod enjoyment.

Ground pounder Gasser came out of hibernation in Utah

So, all in all, an amazing find for a Saturday morning in February.  If you own this ride, comment below and help us with the info and history of this car.

Is that “Barnes and Sperry” name a tribute or is this the same car from back in the day?  See this link to Gasser Madness website and let me know if you guys think this is the same car?

2010 Ridler Winner Announced: Gold Digger

2010 Ridler Award Winner Detroit Autorama, ridlerPictures by: Doug Nykanen

The votes are in both in Cobo Hall at the Detroit Autorama and here at MyRideisMe.com where you could Vote for your favorite “Great 8″ car.  Funny thing is, by 2 votes, the very unofficial voting picked “Gold Digger” same as the judges in Detroit.

We’ll have more pictures of the Ridler winner and the rest of the Detroit Autorama soon, but for now, here’s the shots we have of this beautiful hot rod.

2010 Ridler Award Winner pictures, photos, photography, Detroit Autorama

At this level, every car is perfect. Without sitting inside or hearing from the builders how they did it or why, or maybe cranking up the tunes, we just get to stare and go… yea, that’s extremely well done.

2010 Ridler Award Winner Engine picture, photo, pic, Detroit Autorama

Anyone have a picture showing this engine compartment in a little more detail? (I asked, and Kevin from extrudabody.com hooked me up! Thanks to Tammy, the owner for sending it to him)

hot rod fuel injection ridler winner engine

Notice: A total lack of wires, even for what’s must be electronic fuel injection.  When’s the last time you looked under the hood of a modern car. If you’d remove the over-sized engine cover, you’d see a MESS of wires and clutter. That’s when you truly appreciated the detail of a show car like this.

2010 Ridler Award Winner Detroit Autorama pictures, photos, pics

So here it is, the 2010 Ridler Award winner Gold Digger owned by Tammy Ray of Dahlonega, Georgia. The builder was  T&T Customs. I’d include a link to them, but I can’t find it. Someone help me out.

Like the 2010 “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” winner, “Possessed”, I’m sure there’ll be some heated (and sometimes just hateful) discussion about “Gold Digger”.  I hope you’ll discuss it right here in the comments. (you don’t have to be a member to comment)

Mike Dingham, owner of Possessed, defended his AMBR win and gave his side of the controversy about being disqualified at one point during the show.  Any time you assemble great roadsters like the AMBR contenders, a somewhat heated discussion’s bound to happen. Plus, unlike Gold Digger, the styling of Mike’s 33 Ford left more than a few people scratching their head.

The Ridler Award and America’s Most Beautiful Roadster are, in my mind, the top two hot rod awards in the country. (Agree?) So congratulation to Tammy Ray (I heard she’s a gold mine owner/operator, thus the name…) for a great car and a great achievement.

Let the discussion begin.

Chandler Car Show Shines Downtown

Sick Willys gasser Chandler arizona big block

Overcast skies and the threat of actually having to wear a jacket didn’t deter a great crowd from downtown Chandler, Arizona on February 27, 2010. For all the pictures I took click here.

I figured I’d lead with this Willys gasser. I waited for a few minutes to snap this shot with just a few legs in still walking by. It was pretty big crowd! Even stacked with great cars, I picked this one as my favorite just for it’s sheer gasser badness. Those who disagree are simply wrong!

While you’re looking at this picture, notice the air scoops on the front of the hood. These scoops fed the cross rammed big block Chevy. Cool setup.

Chandler, arizona, car show, willy gasser

Besides the Willys that stopped me in my tracks, I found this car. A 1954 Darrin confirmed by trusty Google! I shot one of these up at Barrett Jackson 2 years ago. A perfectly restored piece that went for big bucks and was worth it.  The sliding pocket doors on these are so different, you’ll know these when you see’m. Now I’ve seen 2 of the 435 ever built.

1954 Darrin with a 502 Chandler Arizona Car Show

An unusual car, no doubt, but look under the hood. At first I thought he’d put in a run-of-the-mill fuel injected small block. Maybe that’s all he SHOULD put in there given the body’s fiberglass and dig that stylish but tiny opening for cooling air. I wanted to ask the owner if it runs hot, but he was busy answering, “What’s that?” Then I saw what’s really stuffed in there:

classic car, hot rods, nice cars, Chandler Arizona Car Show

Squint and you can see “Ram Jet” and 502. Get some.

1932 Ford Roadster duece ardun head Chandler Arizona Car Show

Adding a little pedigree to the show, this is “Double Trouble” fresh from purchase at the Barrett Jackson auction. Also included on this definition of a hot rod’s pedigree is a trip to the Grand National Roadster show as an “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster contender. I dubbed this one America’s Most Bitch’n Roadster. It is.

It was designed and sketched by my friend Jimmy Smith from right here in Arizona. Here’s the sketch.

Rat Rod, hot rods, pickup, quickchange Chandler Arizona Car Show

Making a, uhh… subtle transition from Double Trouble, dig this hot rod. I always hesitate to call it a rat rod, but maybe alot of people would. Hey guys, it may just be unfinished! With the detailed rear suspension still visible and the trick side draft carbed straight six Chevy it ran, I’m just gonna say bad, crowd pleasing hot rod let you decide what you want to call it.

Finally, this is my man Branden’s ride. (He’s a member at MyRideisMe.com so look at his garage here.)

rat rods, hot rod, custom cars Chandler Arizona Car Show

I don’t think Branden minds if we call it a “rat rod”. With the spikes on the headlights, the rusty water pump and general lack of shine, I think it fits. But if you look really closely, there’s alot of well thought out planning shown. The pickup bed features a couple artillery cases for storage and this thing’s Branden’s daily driver so it’s solid.

Branden’s wife’s been fighting cancer since I’ve known him but he told me today she’s now cancer free. Right on!! When you see him shake his hand or give him a hug for goodness sakes!  His family’s been through alot and survived it.  I’m sure they’re all stronger now.

From the positive reaction other cancer patients have had to his car, Branden suggested a run out the the hospital to try and cheer up the patients. Who’s up for a ride to help out some folks who could use a smile?  More info to come soon on a cruise to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Goodyear.

Ending on a positive note then, check out all my pictures from downtown Chandler. We’ll see you around town!

Haddens Hot Rod Drawings

February 26, 2010 by Hechtspeed · 1 Comment

I wish I could draw cars.  I was decent when I was young, but now I’m useless.  Ryan Hadden of Hadden Hot Rod Shop is a car nut who digs drawing cars too.  His own hot rod, a ’54 “Plain Lorraine” F-100 pickup was featured in a blog where Andy Kawahara painted a “shop truck” door logo.  If you missed that, check it out HERE.  Ryan has helped friends visualize their hot rod projects by sketching their custom car and hot rod ideas.  You may have seen his work in the Andy’s US Forest Service Truck feature

US Forest Service Shop Truck car drawing

Such a cool shop truck idea.  Ryan captured it perfectly in his sketch above and Andy built it to spec.

When choosing an artist to sketch your hot rod, there are many options.  The two biggest differences I see is an artist who uses pencil/marker and paper and the artist who uses a computer.  There are also differences in price.  There’s artists out there to fit anyone’s budget.

1961 Apache truck car drawing

This is Andy Kawahara’s other hot rod truck (I see a theme here), a 1961 Apache done up in a Mild Custom look.  I’m really diggin’ the white walls and how they accent with the white top and tonneau cover.  I hope you can build it to look like that man!

1959 El Camino custom car sketch

Dig this crazy Camino!  The cool part about sketching cars is you can get crazy and creative.  This looks rad!  What do you guys think?

1947 Orange Chevy custom hot rod car drawing

Sweet!  Check that grille and louvered hood.  I love these post WWII cars!

"Better Idea" Delivery Pro street car drawing

Here’s a cool delivery pro-street hot rod Ryan calls “Better Idea”.

Hope you liked these sketches by Ryan.  You can see more of his sketches and photography on the Hadden Hot Rod Shop Blog.  You can contact him through his blog or email him HERE if you’re interested in having him sketch your hot rod ideas.

Ryan and I are working on a Hot Rod Sketch Tutorial, a step by step look at Ryan’s drawings with one of my crazy car ideas with a certain late model Japanese grocery getter.  Stay tuned!

Farm Grown Hot Rods at Motorama 2010

February 25, 2010 by Bubba Harmon · 6 Comments

1930 Ford Truck hot rods, custom cars
Mike Smyth’s highly detailed 1930 Ford Streetrod Truck at Motorama 2010

We knew this wasn’t going to be your normal indoor car show when a cloud of exhaust greeted us as we strolled down the main hall at last weekend’s Motorama event. Actually, Motorama isn’t just a car show. It is more like a celebration of all things on wheels.

While the wife and I were at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for the cars, there was plenty of indoor racing and other activities to keep the large crowds entertained. Racing was everywhere; there was go-kart, quarter midget, and arenacross racing with quads and dirt bikes. While the R/C racers and the Robot Conflict participants may have been driving smaller vehicles, they were just as competitive. Bands and DJs were scheduled throughout the day on various stages to entertain your ears and of course the Miss Motorama contestants made their rounds to entertain your eyes. (Sorry, out of respect for my assistant and wife I refrained from snapping any photos of the ladies. Besides, they were way too young for me!)

A nice collection of vendors were ready to help separate you from your money and to feed you a standard county fair style meal if you were hungry. The Farm Show Complex is so large that you actually need a map to find your way around and Motorama packed every corner with something.

Located over in the large North Hall was the combined Rod and Custom and TunerWars Showcase where we spent most of our time.

1933 Willys hot rods, custom cars
Al Nosse’s 1933 Willys with a blown Hemi has won may national awards for good reason.

1955 Nash Metropolitan hot rods, custom cars
Probably one of the wildest customs at the show was Richard Sexton’s 1955 Nash Metropolitan. It even had wheelie bars!

Motorama 2010 hot rods, custom cars
When does it become more about the stuff around your car rather than the car itself? Too much? What do you think?

1995 Ford Probe hot rods, custom cars
Delynn Rowe’s 1995 Ford Probe sparkled in pink catching the eye of many of the girls in the TunerWars area.

Over on the opposite side of the Farm Show Complex was the Speed Show. The Speed Show had several hundred more vehicles including a large collection of off-road vehicles and race cars.

Motorama 2010 RockCrawlers off road, custom jeep
The classic pose for a Rockcrawler is flexed on a ramp or parked on another vehicles tire.

We had a great time at Motorama and we have already penciled in the date (Feb 19-20, 2011) for next year’s show. What makes it even better is that  my wife, Peg, now is helping me with gear and passing out MyRideisMe cards. Does your significant other like cars as much as you do? We’ve been married for over 21 years and we still enjoy going to shows together. Check out more photos in the Picture Gallery and if you are ever at a show and you see a very large man (6’5” and 340) crawling around on the ground with a camera, say “Hi,” it’s probably me.

Origins of Speed – a Historical Look Back

I know hot rods and customs is what brings us car guys and gals together but, its the people that make this hobby what it is.  Everyone has their own story.  My passion for the automobile started with my dad and uncle.  They have hot rodded off and on since they were teenagers.  It was their hobby, their passion.  It’s what kept them out of trouble when their dad passed away at the age of 15 and 12.  My dad has tons of stories of his ‘64 Mercury Comet Cyclone on the streets of Azusa, Calif and the original Irwindale Dragstrip.  My uncle has stories of tearing up GMR (Glendora Mountain Road) in his Nova and Datsun 510.  Most of my close friends are there because of our common interestes in cars.  My brother and I and my cousin have our own stories of cars (and motorcycles) that we have customized that we can share with our kids.  It’s the Hecht pasttime.

Gardena Raceway September 1946

A recurring theme throughout the early days of speed equipment manufacturing was the dirt track racing with chopped and stripped down roadsters.  This is where you advertised your parts.  Win at the races and sell parts, it was the only formula before the days of engine dynos.

The automobile itself has only been around for the everyday person since the early 1900’s.  That’s really not that long in the grand scheme of things.  But time moves on and documenting and remembering our rodding roots is very important.  So, where are the origins of speed?  When did hot rodding and customizing your car really start?  The heart of that industry has got to be Southern California in the late 1930’s and 40’s.  Soon, hotrodders found the dry lake beds of California and the Salt Flats of Bonneville, Utah where they could let the flatheads stretch their legs…

In this post, the hot rod history lesson comes from one of the coolest automotive books of all time!  Motorbooks has done it again with the introduction of “Merchants of Speed”, authored by Paul D. Smith.  This is a fact based book, a history book if you will.  Photos are from the actual “Merchants” themselves in some cases.  Families and close friends have also proven to be a wealth of information, photos and documentation.

Ed "Isky" Iskendarian poses next to his 1924 T bucket roadster hot rod

Ed “Isky” Iskenderian with his famous roadster purchased from a friend in 1938 for $25.  Photo courtesy of Ed Iskenderian.  Click to Enlarge.

Above is Ed Iskenderian in his military uniform posing with his 1924 T bucket.  Born in 1921, “he was about 12 years old (in 1933 or so) when he began to notice a type of car that was completely different than the run-of-the-mill vehicles that inhabited the roadways.  These street rods were mainly Model T’s void of all unnecessary parts and propelled with hopped-up four-cylinders.  Ed and his buddies found out they could see more of these cars up at Muroc Dry Lake.”

Like many of the time, Ed served in WWII and doing so, gained many mechanical skills that would serve them well later.  When he returned from the war, Ed wanted to get his roadster back on the road.  That obviously turned into “how can I make it faster”.  His first hot rod part was this 4 carb intake manifold for his flathead you see below.  Ed eventually became the first President of the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association in 1963.

Iskenderian's first hot rod part, an engine turned 4 carb manifold

To find out about the “Isky Cams” part of the Iskenderian history you need to pick up this book.

Edelbrock…just let that name ring in your ears for a second.  Probably THE most successful speed equipment manufacturer to date.  In 1938 Vic Sr. bought his dual-purpose machine, a 1932 V8 powered roadster which became his family hauler/dry lakes racer.  Vic was involved in every type of racing, oval track, midget racing, dry lakes/Bonneville, event boat racing.  There’s so much more, but I don’t have the room here.  Seriously, just buy the book!

Edelbrock Jr and Sr have created THE most successful hot rod business

Edelbrock, a family tradition of hot rodding.  Photo courtesy of Edelbrock Corporation.

In all, “Merchants of Speed” book includes the history of 22 Speed Equipment shops.  You’ll see others like Navarro, Ansen Automotive, Howard Cams, Braje, and more!  This book is insanely cool!  Being into more modern late model Japanese cars, I really appreciated this book.  Paul Smith did an amazing job of finding out the details of these shops and the speed parts that made them successful.  The old photos are great.  This book will be an important part of future hot rodders remembering their origins.  That’s just my humble opinion.

Paul D. Smith author and Barney Navarro, Merchant of SpeedIn all seriousness, this book is and will be one of my cherished possessions in life.  Sounds lame, but I’m serious when I say that this book will be very important in continuing the memories of the very first hot rodders.

Take a look at these photos and the history attached and think about your car story.  We want to hear yours.  Please share them with us, we’d love to share them with MyRideisMe.com readers.

Thank you Motorbooks and Paul D. Smith and an even bigger thank you to you Merchants of Speed.  I will have an increased sense of respect at Bonneville this year.

Fisheyed Look at the Grand National Roadster Show

February 7, 2010 by pikesan · 4 Comments

Slick blue custom in the main hall by Rick Dore Grand National Roadster Show

Well if I could paint like Tom Fritz, I would. If I could draw like my friends Brian and Dwayne, I’d probably do that too.  Since my creativity’s pretty much limited to taking pictures, I’m doing my best to catch up to the great shots taken by Swanee, my main man shooting for MyRideisMe.com. Swanee’s yet to lay down his shots from GNRS, so here’s mine, FISHEYE style.

Stromberg 97 powered flathead from Blackie Gejeian's "Blackie" Roadster

A fisheye lens is an ultra wide-angle lens that takes in an extremely wide, hemispherical image. A side effect of this super wide shot is the distortion.  I’m shooting with a 10.5mm fisheye lens. Sometimes that distortion looks kinda cool with the swoopy angles of a custom or in tight on the details of an engine like the Stromberg powered flathead in Blackie Gejeian’s “Blackie” Roadster.

Skull on the Grill, Grand National Roadster Show Street Rodder Room

Sometimes, the look is just sinister!  This is the grille from “Camel Toe Racing” 1932 Ford.  The closer you get, the more distortion. I’m just a couple inches off this grill and I probably cropped the shot some. Too bad I have to give the lens back to my boss!

Flamed Custom - not all were suede in the palace! Grand National Roadster Show

Shooting in the Suede Palace at the Grand National Roadster Show, you can either love or hate the florescent lights that line the exhibit hall.  With this lens, the lights seem to stream on forever and have a distinct curve. Don’t worry, it’s not your mind playing tricks on you!

Atomic Punk in the Suede Palace Grand National Roadster Show
The fish suits the wacky hemi powered and bubble topped “Atomic Punk”.

This is just a couple of the goofy, love-it-or-hate-it  fisheye shots I took at the show. Take a look at the picture gallery called:

I’m curious. Does the fisheye work for you? Yea? Sometimes? Let me know…

Hot Rod Art at Gasoline Gallery

January 12, 2010 by GreaseGirl · 4 Comments

gasoline.gallery.hot.rod.art.004It’s Saturday night rolling down Main Street in El Segundo, a cute little Maybury-esque town in Los Angeles County. All of the sudden the street is lined with hot rods and some bobber-styled bikes. Cool cats pour out of a store front holding cans of Pabst beer in their hands. Have I landed in heaven?!

Not just yet. It just the New Year’s Nuisance 2 art show & party at Gasoline Gallery. This gallery has been growing into its own little epicenter of kustom kulture over the past couple years. Specializing in low-brow art and artist-featured t-shirts (and most recently a record label all their own,) Gasoline Gallery throws these great shin-digs every couple months when their gallery-show changes.

gasoline.gallery.hot.rod.art.016

I’ve been to a few of these now and am pleased to report this show was just as high quality and fun as the others – with artist, 3 sheets, taking the spotlight. That’s enough of my blabbering, let me just show you the pictures! For more info on any of the work or artists shown, contact Gasoline Gallery or look em up on MySpace.

Our friend Dwayne Vance’s piece stood out. I wish my photograph would’ve captured it a little better…but I don’t think that car wants to be captured!

This sculpture was one of my favorite pieces, done by artist Odd Rodney. I wish I could’ve taken it home! The whole evening had me feeling a little artistic myself – so when I stopped for gas on my way home I couldn’t help but notice the cool lighting provided at the gas station!

Cheer’s to art! Whether it’s being hammered out in your own garage or hung on the wall over at Gasoline Gallery…happy trails to you!
