Story and Pictures by Dale Herseth – All pictures from the Classic Datsun Show HERE

Dale already gave us a quick run-down of the event. If you missed that story here: 3rd Annual Multi State Datsun Classic. After that, I asked him to let us know who won and which cars he liked best. Thanks Dale!

Best of Show:

Owners: Ryan and Shaunde Romaine

Home town: Winchester, Ca

Car: 1974 Datsun Bluebird-U SSS-E

This is a very rare car that was only built for the Japanese market.  In fact it was only built for approx 6 months in Japan.  Even though most Datsuns in 74 were carbureted, this car has factory fuel injection that feeds its L16 (1600cc) engine.  It was a very pristine car and deserving of Best in Show

1st place, 510 category

Owners: Randy & Lisa Lewis

Home town: Scottsdale, AZ

Car: 1972 Datsun 510 Sedan

A very low mile example of a Datsun 510, with a unique story.  Randy purchased this car about a month ago, buying it sight unseen.  It had stayed in one family since new, prior to Randy buying it.

The car only had 44,243 miles on it and hadn’t been registered since 1997.

Now the cool part of this story is Randy flew one way from Phoenix, Az to Pittsburgh, Pa and drove it across the country and ended up at the “Japanese Classic Car Show” in Long Beach, Ca with it two weeks later.  Then he drove it to this show in Williams.  Randy has put 4000 miles on it in less than 1 month.  Nothing like driving a vintage Datsun, across the country!

Randy and Lisa also had their immaculate orange 240Z in the show

2nd place, “Other Datsun” Class

Owners: Greg & Becky Childs

Home town: Surprise, Az

Car: 1967 Datsun WRL411 SSS Wagon

A nicely restored wagon, but this is not your average wagon.  This one is a factory “triple S” wagon.  The standard 411’s came with a 1.3L 4 cylinder engine.  The “SSS” wagons came with the larger 1600cc engine that the roadsters in the day were using.  Including the factory dual carb set up.  The performance upgrade with this engine was nice.  However it was a very tight fit.  In fact to make it work Nissan had to use a modified intake which tilted the carbs inward, and a hole had to be cut into the driver side inner fender well for the exhaust to exit through the fender well.  All this was done at the factory.

(Greg & Becky are big Datsun collectors, they had a total of 5 cars in this show and took home 4 awards.)

3rd place, “Late Datsun Roadster” class

Owners: Dale & Jodi Herseth

Home town: Gilbert, Az

Car: 1970 SPL311 Roadster

This is a restored to original 70’ Datsun Roadster.  It remains the factory white color with red interior.  Has a 1600cc dual carb engine with 4spd manual transmission.  1970 was the last year of the Datsun Roadster.  It is also the only year that Nissan sold both the Roadster and the “New” 240Z at the same time.  This was the end of the line for the Roadsters as Nissan started the Z-car legacy.

Just Cause it’s COOL!

Owner: Bill Gilbert

Home town: Arizona

Car: 1977 280Z – ZZZAP edition

In 1977 Datsun came out with a special edition of the 280Z.  It was called the 280ZZZAP.

“The Z with more ZZZap!”  It was available for 1 model year only.  This special package even inspired a video arcade driving game called 280-ZZZAP.  These video games are also very collectable if you can find one.

Bill’s car is an un-restored low mileage vehicle, in pristine condition.  This particular model is very rare and hard to find.

Amazing to see all these classic Datsun cars in the tiny city of Williams. Thanks again for the pictures Dale!
