Drivetrain:
Small block Chevy 350 bored .030 over. Lots of little HP scavenging tricks hidden inside. It will be a good efficient street motor. Rebuilt TH-350 auto trans. Might change out to a 700R4 for the overdrive later on. Pontiac Firebird posi rearend with street gear.
Chassis:
Stock for now. Plan on either adding a mustang II or doing frame swap or subframe. Still researching.
Wheels & Tires:

Nothing special

Body:

Yep, have a body... paint...kinda.

Interior:
Pretty much bare. S-10 bench seat, Lokar shifter. Dash will be red or gold heavy metal flake and will be heavily customized.

1940 Studebaker Commander Business Coupe. Picked this up out of Illinois as a project that somebody started, but never...

Going the way of the gasser

So there's been a few developments..... As I've torn farther into the car, I keep finding stuff that's going to take a lot of time and money to fix. At least to repair to my "vision". I'm trying to think logically about this whole thing and the reality is that if I want to see this thing up and running any time soon, I should go forward with the bare bones gasser idea and then down the road if I feel like it, transform it from there once I have honed my sheet metal skills a little better and have all the proper equipment for the undertaking.

So I stuffed the straight axle under her. Took out the lowering block from the rear. Looks pretty decent. Stance is a bit off, but that will be fixed once I have some slicks on the rear and skinnys on the front.

I've been working on getting the floorboards into shape and replacing the firewall. That part is going slow.

Picked up the motor I'm going to use. It's a 1963 Pontiac 389 bored .060 over to 400ci. I got lucky and found it on CL. It was advertised as rebuilt, but I tore it down anyway to check and so I could re-assemble it my way. What I found inside was: new pistons, a new lunati Bracket master II cam, double-roller timing chain, new melling oil pump, New connecting rod hardware, and a few other nice little things.

I mocked up the engine with the 6x2 and magneto I plan to use. I posted some pics.

I'm going to try to adapt a set of SBC fenderwell headers to Pontiac flanges. We'll see how it goes. The middle port might mess things up.

Still trying to decide on trans. Thinking maybe a TH-400 with a 2800-3200stall converter.

Gasser?????

A friend did this Photoshopping of my studebaker over another friend's gasser. It's kind of cool. But I'm still not sure if gasser is the right direction to go.

<img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b117/hotrodderguy/JonsStude.jpg">

I already have teh straight axle, so it would be pretty pointless to not at least put it under there and see what it would look like, but the more I look at it, the more I think it may need to be a taildragger.

The Cole Foster Ford coupe that he did for Hammet is a nice inspiration, also getting a lot of inspiration from looking at lincoln zephers. Trying my best to find other good examples of taildraggers made of this era.

I'm also still trying to sell the '61 pontiac. Eventually I'd like to find another 1955-1956 Pontiac 2dr as a project. I had one a few years ago that I sold when cash was tight. I regret it now. Have some fresh ideas and some cool motor stuff that would be perfect for such a project.

How I got it

This is how I bought it. I hated the side pipes. It sayt too high and the motor setup was just shy of a hack job.

Headed to me

this is a pic of it on a trailer at it's previous owners place headed toward me.

work begins

Tore the junk SBC out.

Not much room in here for a V8

Crappy stock suspension and steering didn't leave room for much of anything.

Bye bye frontend

you can see what I did with the stock frontend. No more tight rails. No more obsolete parts.

hello new frontend

General straight axle front. Currently with 7" drop axle. I have a straight axle that I'll stuff under there to raise it up as a gasser for awhile until I figure out my next move. I'm leaning toward an entire chassis swap to a dakota chassis.

angles...

stupid angle shot while I was messing with the hood sides.

gasser con't - I decided to go the gasser route. I have the straight axle under the front already and right now I'm in the middle of getting the floorboards and firewal worked out. It will be running a built small block chevy with a TH-350 w/ transbrake and manual valve body as well as a mosier 9" rearend. I hope to have it ready to make a pass before the end of fall. Pictures to come when I get a little farther. Read More...
Gasser???? - Guy over on the hamb did the studebaker up as a gasser with photoshop. Since it is a commander it looks a bit different than the Champion coupes that were mainly used as gassers back in the day. I'm not sure that I'm digging the look. Seems to me that the gasser coupes should have a notch back or something. Maybe the guy got the proportions wrong when photoshopping. I don't reall y know. Something just seems weird. The rear of mine seems to flow more....making me think taildragger...... Photobucket Read More...
1940 Studebaker - Changed my mind..... This project has been evolving over the last couple years. I've changed my mind a lot and haven't gotten very far with it because life has gotten in the way. Presently I am considering making it into a gasser for awhile. The axle set-up that I did lends itself perfectly to it. IN the meantime, I think that I am going to buy a dodge dakota chassis and start work on it to do a chassis swap for the stude down the line. As much as I like the look of a good gasser, they are pretty pointless for the street. Since I'm not a huge racer, making the stude more street friendly seems like the better plan, but might as well have some fun with it as a gasser first. Once I get a dakota chassis, I will most likely work on a rear notch and will air bag it so the stude can lay frame and have that taildragger look. Going to be a lot of work, evcentually, but since I don't plan to sell her, I have plenty of time. Read More...

Hey Trump, thanks for joining MyRideisMe.com. To find your parts, check with Greasegirl (member here and fellow Stude owner). She visited a Studebaker collector up in Eloy, NV I think. I bet that guy'd have what you need.

I'm in need of a pair of 1939-1940 Studebaker running boards. I am also in need of the cowl vent mechanism. If you have any of these items and are willing to sell them, please let me know. Thanks.
